Unicode Design Tasks 2023

“Design is not just what it looks like. Design is how it works.” - Steve Jobs

Hello prospective Designers! The assignment questions are given below, but
before that, please make sure to read these few reminders:

1. Know your stuff. Read, read, read. The more

you read, the more you will understand the
wonderful world of design. It’s not just
making a poster or designing clothes. We
are talking about Product Design -
something that happens in every IT
company before the product is implemented,
even. So read! Google everything :)

2. We cannot stress this enough, but you must

know the difference between a UX and UI
Designer.

3. At Unicode, you can be a front-end

developer and a designer. This implies that
you can learn more about both the fields -
frontend and design. This gives you a huge
advantage while applying for internships in
the near

4. Lastly, please do not copy. Especially not

when you are applying for a design posting.

5. Regarding tools - you have the freedom to use

anything. Since we use Figma at Unicode,
knowing it for wireframing is a good advantage.
For creating Information Architectures you can
use any mind mapping tool. For prototyping, you
can use a pen and paper/Figma too.
Task - (Note that there is no coding required to be done here)

Ticket Booking App for flights

Q. Perform design critique on any one of the above themes. This critique must
involve the following things. (examples are listed w.r.t. mIndicator app)

1. Make an Information Architecture (IA) (eg. IA for the Train sections only).
Tools: Miro/any other mind mapping or IA tool/paper

2. Develop 3 storylines (can be paragraphs of text or drawings) where th User

Experience is hampered. Make sure to explain them in a paragraph. (eg. the
app loads too slowly or the button to view the map is unnoticeable by most
users.)
Tools: A text editor/paper/anything else :)

3. Suggest 3 ways the app can be made better - visually and experience-wise.
(eg. the icon for monorail and metro look too similar - this increases cognitive
stress on the user.)
Tools: A text editor/paper/anything else :)

4. Make wireframes to support your suggestions. (eg. high fidelity and low
fidelity for both web and app interface)
Tools: Low Fidelity Wireframe using pen and paper High Fidelity Wireframe
using Figma

Bonus assignment (optional)

Make a case study for the design critique you performed in the above assignment,
you can also add other sections like user persona, typography, colours etc. The
format of the case study is up to you, so research more about it and use your
creativity to design your own case study.

Note: Please mention the sites that inspired you while coming up with your creativity.

Submission Details -

1. Keep the tasks ready during your interview: Bring these tasks and the
projects you might have done during the Unicode interviews and we will
review them. Make sure that servers (if used) are set up and ready before you
join the call.
2. Upload your code to a GitHub Repository: Make a private repository on Github
and upload the code there before the deadline. Create a README.MD file and
write a small overview of what you have made along with the screenshots.
Refer to this link for how to make a good README.md: Make a README.

3. Make a Single Repository: Your repository should contain the final code.
There should not be different repositories for different tasks.

Important Notes -

1. The bonus assignment is optional, it is okay if you are not able to do it (though
doing it will definitely fetch you some brownie points).
2. Since this is a design assignment you are free to use your own creativity.
3. In Unicode, you can either apply for only design or design + frontend position;
if applying for the latter please do the frontend tasks as well.
4. The resources above are just a reference point for you to start your design
journey, please do not limit yourself to those, explore as much as you can.
5. Bring these tasks to the Unicode interviews and we will review it there itself;
make a google drive folder with all your tasks in it so everything is in one
place for the interview.

For any technical doubts related to the assignment, try to search the problem (a
quick google always helps). If nothing works feel free to contact us.
(A good way to reach us would be messaging on Whatsapp and for any error-related queries
sending a screenshot would be helpful)
