Animal Farm - Chapter 4

1) What are the differences between the characters of Fredrick and Pilkington and between
the farms they run?
Pilkington was an easy-going farmer who spent most of his time either fishing or hunting. He
owns Foxwood farm which is a large and neglected one.
Fredrick was a tough, shrewd man who owned Pinchfield farm, a smaller farm which was better
kept and well taken care of

2) How does Orwell indicate that Fredrick and Pilkington are ‘thoroughly frightened’ by the
events on Animal Farm?
Both these farm owners were terrified of the rebellion and were quite anxious to prevent it
from happening on their farms. They spread rumors that the animals endlessly fighting among
themselves and animals starving to death.

3) What was Napoleon doing during the Battle of Cowshed?

Napoleon was absent during the Battle of Cowshed. There was no sign of him anywhere .
Snowball charged bravely at the humans and acted as their leader.

4) What do you think Orwell was satirizing (making fun of) when he described how the animals
celebrated their victory?
He was making fun of the way the animals celebrate their victory upon the humans using stuff
that belongs to mankind (Flag, Gun, Medal)

5) Describe the different reactions of Boxer and Snowball to the 'death' of the stable boy.
What does it tell the readers about their characters?
Boxer feels very sorrowful and sad, and he does not want to take any human life in the process.
This shows that Boxer is emotional and soft-hearted.
Snowball tells Boxer not to be emotional. He is cold-hearted (merciless) and not-sentimental if
his task is achieved, nothing bothers him.

6) Explain how Snowball's plan of defense led to the invader's defeat. List the steps.
Snowball prepares the "defensive operations". His attack was the pigeons and the geese who
would peck at the men's heads and legs. His second attack consisted of Muriel, Benjamin, all the
sheep, and himself, His third attack in which the three horses, the three cows, and the rest of
the pigs who were in ambush (hiding) all would dash towards the men and attack them.
Animal Farm - Chapter 5
1) Why does Mollie leave? How has Orwell prepared us for this development? You will need to
remind yourself of what she does in earlier chapters.
Mollie leaves because she is not used to the hard work being done on Animal Farm. She is too
used to the attention from the humans as she is quite self-centered and so could not get past
the ribbons and the sugar. Orwell prepares us as she was always late for work She hides
cowardly during the Battle of Cowshed.

2) Orwell says, ‘It had come to be accepted that the pigs……should decide all questions’ How
does this happen?
The pigs became leaders because they were accepted as being the cleverest. Moreover,
Squealer was used as a mouthpiece to control all the other animals.

3) How does Orwell make us aware of the importance of the sheep’s ‘Four legs good, two legs
bad’ slogan?
This can be seen as Napoleon’s plan. The unintelligent sheep unknowingly worked in Napoleon’s
favor as this singing would break the flow of Snowball’s speeches and distractedthe animals.

4) Orwell says that Squealer’s argument was ‘unanswerable’. Do you think it was?
No, the argument could be countered as the animals saw Snowball fighting bravely and getting
hurt in the battle ,but the animals were too foolish and naïve to understand that.

Characters
Squealer becomes the mouthpiece of the pigs. He relies on many various techniques that help in
convincing the simple-minded animals of what the pigs do. Moreover, he, with a very sharp voice,
mentions Mr. Jones’s name every now and then to coax the animals to accept the pigs as the
ultimate leaders. In short, he eventually serves as Napoleon's Minister of Propaganda.

Snowball is successful in educating the other animals. To help the animals understand the
general concept of Animalism, he reduces the Seven Commandments to a single slogan, "Four
legs good, two legs bad."
He shows bravery in the battle of the Cowshed and continued fighting although being injured. A
medal for “Animal Hero, First Class” is created and awarded to Snowball.
Snowball is intellectually intelligent and a brilliant orator ( speaker ). To start with, Boxer is the
tremendously powerful cart-horse whose physical strength is extremely important to finish all the work
on the farm. Besides, this highly-regarded inspiration is an allegory for the working class in the Russian
Revolution.

Boxer is perfectly portrayed as a simple-minded but dedicated worker; he cannot learn any
more than four letters of the alphabet. Furthermore, his new motto "I will work harder.” He
believes any problem can be solved if he works harder. He attentively attend all the meetings
and lead the singing of Beasts of England’. In brief, he blindly obeys the pigs.

Benjamin never laughs since he does not find anything to laugh at and he scarcely talks or gives
any opinion about the rebellion. He is quite unchanged and not enthusiastic. He works in the
same way as he did at Jones’ time and refuses to become passionate about the rebellion.
