Instruction manual

1 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The RADius 700X Low Power Transponder is a passive radar reflector. Each
transponder returns a unique ID code to the RADius Interrogator (transmitter/receiver).
This allows for radar based measurements of the distance and bearing between the
transponder and an Interrogator, which is typically located on a vessel.

1.1 System description

RADius is developed for applications in need of a robust and reliable relative
positioning system. RADius consists of one or several interrogators typically located on
a moving vessel and one or several transponders which are deployed on the target the
vessel will approach. The RADius system measures the distance and bearing between
the interrogators on the moving vessel and the transponders. All transponders deployed
on the target have unique identities, thus multiple transponders can be tracked
simultaneously. This improves the integrity and availability of the system. For general
information about the RADius system see reference [1].

1.2 System components

The two main parts of the RADius 700X Transponder are:

1. The transponder electronic unit which is located behind a plastic cover. This cover
is transparent to the radio frequency used.

2. The battery box which contains the encapsulated and current limited battery as the
energy source.

In addition the following parts are required for a complete transponder:

 Power cable from battery to electronic unit
 Mechanical mounting bracket

3.1.2 Equipment
ATEX 100a certified gas alarm may be required.

3.1.3 Tools – mounting

Care should be taken and only tools that can be safely used in zone 1 shall be used.
Consult site responsible for details.

3.2 Installation of RADius 700X in Zone 1

After finding the most suitable location for the RADius 700X on the platform/vessel,
see section 3.2.4.1, the cable from the battery box to the transponder must be inserted
before the transponder unit is physically mounted to a mast or the railing. The TID code
must be set before checking that the transponder operates properly. See page VI for
zone information.

3.2.1 Transponder ID Code

Each transponder working against one Interrogator must have a unique Transponder
Identification Code. The factory setting is default 150 but can be changed as required.
See Table 1 TID settings. Each unit shall be labelled with its Transponder ID (TID).

Note! Since the TID code is intended to be altered by the installers, the default
code is not written on the equipment label. Therefore the actual code
selected must be recorded with a waterproof marker on the label before the

3.2.2 Power-up of RADius 700X

When the transponder is shipped, the connection between the battery and the electronic
circuit board is "open". It is therefore necessary to open the lid of the battery box and
insert the cable from the transponder electronics.

Figure 10 Battery box with connection board

Just before the equipment is brought out to its final installation site in the EX zone, we
recommend to power-up the transponder by connecting the battery cable (see ) to the J3
connector on the connection board. This will activate the transponder. Assuming that
there is an Interrogator within the tracking range, a basic functional test can thus be
possible to perform.

This is done as follows:

 Open the cover of the battery box.
 Plug the loose cable into the open connector as shown in Figure 11.

Do not reverse the polarity!

3.2.6 Cable glands

To prevent possible ingress of water along the cable it is essential that the cable gland
nuts are properly fastened. Check that the glands are firmly mounted. Tighten if
necessary.

3.2.7 Operational check

After the system has been installed and powered up, the proper operation of the
transponder must be verified by making it visible to the Interrogator of a RADius 1000
system (which is located in a safe area – usually on an approaching vessel). The
Interrogator should be within tracking range and have a known distance and known
relative angle (bearing) from the RADius 700X Transponder. For the low power
transponder we recommend less than 500 m from the Interrogator (precision range).
It shall be verified that the system performs measurements of distance and bearing with
the specified accuracy.
See more information in [1] and [2].
