Installation Manual
Introduction
This manual contains the information necessary to install the Seatex DPS 700 cabinet on
a vessel.
Seatex DPS 700 units are highly accurate DGPS positioning sensors. Equipped with
two (Inmarsat and Spotbeam) or more independent DGPS correction links, increased
accuracy and quality control in the positioning is achieved. DPS 700 units incorporate
internal IALA (International Association of Lighthouse Authorities) Beacon Receivers
for reception of DGPS correction data and a UHF Receiver for Petrobras corrections
in Brazil.
The DPS 700 system may be delivered with different sizes and types of monitors.
Installation of the monitor is therefore not part of this manual, but is described in a
separate installation manual. The installation procedures for the cabinet in this manual
have to be followed to achieve the specified accuracy of the product.
WARNING
The equipment includes high voltage (115/230 VAC) which means that the possibility
for getting an electrical shock is present.
Before commencing any installation work, read the guidelines for First Aid treatment of
personnel with electrical shock.
Note
Unless otherwise noted, all mounting brackets or frames mentioned within this document
are to be supplied by yard/customer.
The guidelines for installation presented here must be regarded as a base for detailed
plans prepared by the installation shipyard. These plans must include drawings,
instructions and procedures specific to the ship in which the equipment is to be installed.
These drawings must be approved by the local maritime classification society.
Unless stated otherwise, all installation work described in this document is to be
performed by yard/customer personnel. It is the responsibility of the yard/customer to
assure that their installation personnel are sufficiently qualified, and that proper caution
is taken to avoid injuries or damage to life, health, environment, equipment and property.

Logistics
Safety: General safety precautions should be followed
when working in the mast or on deck.
Personnel qualifications: Trained electricians.
Minimum number of personnel: Two.
Recommended location for the DPS In the instrument room or on the bridge with
700 Cabinet: good ventilation.
Special tools required: None.
Handling
Care should be taken when unpacking and handling the equipment. A visual inspection
should be made to check that the equipment has not been damaged during shipment and
that all components and parts are present according to the packing list.
The equipment can be lifted by hand.
The equipment contains delicate electronic components - handle accordingly.
Mechanical installation
The mechanical installation of a DPS 700 system includes:
• Installation of the DPS 700 Cabinet (covered in this manual).
• Installation of IALA Beacon antennas.
• Installation of GPS L1/L2 and GPS/GLONASS L1/L2 antennas.
• Installation of UHF antennas.
• Installation of Spotbeam antenna.
• Installation of coax connectors/cables.

UHF antennas
For installation of UHF antennas, refer to the UHF, 450MHz Antenna Installation
Manual.
Caution
If the antenna cable is attached to the DPS unit, do not attach the antenna
cable to the antenna when the DPS unit is running. If the antenna cable is
short-circuited with POWER ON, the GPS receiver will be damaged.
Spotbeam antenna
For installation of Spotbeam antenna, refer to the Spot Beam Antenna Installation
Manual.
Caution
If the antenna cable is attached to the DPS unit, do not attach the antenna
cable to the antenna when the DPS unit is running. If the antenna cable is
short-circuited with POWER ON, the GPS receiver will be damaged.
Electrical installation
For electrical installation of the DPS 700 Cabinet, refer to the Cable List and Cable
Details documents for the specific project.
Cable termination and earthing details is described in the Kongsberg Earthing, Screening
and Power Supply Principles document (document number 848-161012).
Caution
All external cables connected to the DPS 700 Cabinet must be screened and
connected to ground in both ends. Make sure the cable screen is in contact
with the connector housing. «Pigtail» connections must be avoided.
Connectors
The rear of the DPS 700 includes following panels:
• The rear panel of the DPS 132 unit.
• The rear panel of the DPS 232 unit.
• The rear panel of the DGPS 464 unit
8 357248/A
Installation Manual
The rear panels contain communication ports for interfacing to external systems. In
addition, a USB port and a LAN port together with a power switch are located behind a
flip-up cover at the left-hand end of the front panel of the DPS 132 unit and the DPS
232 unit.
For a view of the connectors at the front of the DPS 132 and DPS 232 units, see Figure 2,
for a view of the connectors at the rear of the DPS 132 and DPS 232 units, see Figure 3,
for a view of the connectors at the rear of the DGPS 464 unit, see Figure 5 and for a view
of the connectors at the rear of the Inmarsat and Spotbeam demodulators, see Figure 6.
For a list of the connector types and there configuration, refer to the following four tables.

Serial lines
The DPS 700 system communicates with external equipment through RS-232 and
RS-422 serial lines. The number of serial lines with input of differential DGNSS
corrections are only limited by the number of available communication ports. Output data
are position, time and velocity to navigation computers, dynamic positioning systems etc.
The DPS 132 and DPS 232 Com 1 and Com 2 connectors are 9-pin Dsub male and
have the following pin layout.
Table 5 DPS 132 and DPS 232 Com 1 and Com 2 pin layout
Note
The DPS 132 and DPS 232 Com 1 and 2 are not as accurate with regard to timing
as DPS 132 and DPS 232 Com 9 to Com 14 and are not recommended to be used for
timing critical outputs.
The DPS 132 and DPS 232 Com 9 to Com 14 connectors on the connector board (see
Figure 4) are 5-pin screw terminals and have the following pin layout.

The DGPS 464 Port 1 and Port 2 connectors are 9-pin Dsub male and have the following
pin layout.
A example of how an external alarm can be connected to the DPS 132 and DPS 232 units
is shown in External Alarm connection diagram on page 18.
PPS port
A 1 pulse-per-second (1PPS) signal synchronized with GPS time is available from the
PPS port at the rear of the DPS 132 and DPS 232 units. The port has galvanic separation,
the PPS signal originates from the GNSS receiver within the unit, the pulse width is
minimum 10 ms., the signal is buffered and fed at 120 Ω, and the 1 PPS is generated
exactly once every second. It is also possible to select an external source as PPS and in
this case the PPS port connector, which has the following pin layout, is then an input.

Analog out
Three analog output channels are available on the Analog Out 10-pin screw terminal of
the DPS 132 and DPS 232 units. The variables available for analog output are roll, pitch,
heave and Datawell Hippy compatible roll and pitch signals. The selection of variable
and channel properties is performed in the operator software.
The Analog out connector has the following pin layout.
Analog in
The Analog in connector of the DPS 132 and DPS 232 units has the following pin layout.

Installation procedure
Refer to Figure 3 for DPS 132 and DPS 232 connector locations.
Note
The GNSS and IALA antenna cables must be as straight as possible. Do not crush or
crimp the cable with tie-downs as this will affect the electrical properties of the cables.

13 Connect input and output connections for external equipment to Com9 to Com14
screw terminals at the rear of the DPS 232 unit.
14 Connect a grounding cable from the grounding terminal at the rear of the DPS 232
unit to the grounding terminal inside the DPS Cabinet.
15 Connect a grounding cable from the grounding terminal inside the DPS Cabinet to a
suitable structure, e.g. to the vessel structure.
16 Connect power cables to the power connectors at the rear of the DPS 132 unit, the
DPS 232 unit and their VGA monitor(s).
