Tutorial 1: Descriptive Statistics

1. The following data represent a number of journal papers read by a sample of 15

final year students before they come out with final proposal for their research
project.

3 8 9 7 13
9 7 11 13 5
8 12 13 4 10
(i) Calculate the mean, median and mode for the above data.
(ii) Calculate the standard deviation of the number of journal papers read by
the students.
(iii) Compute the coefficient of variation the number of journal papers read by
the students.
(iv) Based on your answers in part (i), describe the shape of this data set.

2. The number of sick days due to colds and flu last year was recorded by a sample
of 15 Multimedia University’s students. The data are listed below:

5 7 0 2 15
6 5 9 3 8
10 4 5 2 12

(i) Compute the mean, median and mode.

(ii) Calculate the variance .
(iii) Find the coefficient of variation for the number of sick days.
(iv) Are the data skewed? If so, how?

3. A survey has been carried out to study on the annual salary earned for whom
perform the similar jobs in a particular industry. The following table provides the
data.

Salary Earned (RM000) No. of Respondents

20 but less than 22 4
22 but less than 24 8
24 but less than 26 28
26 but less than 28 28

4. A sample of 50 secondary school students was surveyed on the number of

minutes spent on browsing the Internet during their free time. The results are
summarised in the following table:

Time spent (in minutes) Number of students

7 – 18 6
19 – 30 10
31 – 42 13
43 – 54 8
55 – 66 5
67 – 78 6
79 – 90 2
Total 50

(i) Calculate the mean, median and mode for the above data.
(ii) Calculate the standard deviation of the time spent by the students.
(iii) Compute the coefficient of variation for the time spent by the students.
(iv) Based on your answers in part (i), describe the shape of this data set.

5. A sample of 30 financial analysts was asked to provide forecasts of earning per

share of a corporation for next year. The results are summarized in the following
table:

Forecast ($ per share) Number of Analysts

$9.95 to under $10.45 4
$10.45 to under $10.95 10
$10.95 to under $11.45 8
$11.45 to under $11.95 5
$11.95 to under $12.45 3

Calculate:
(i) Mean
(ii) Median
(iii) Mode
(iv) Variance
(v) Coefficient of variation
(vi) Describe the shape of this data set.
