TUTORIAL 1
1. Three charged particles are placed at the corners of an equilateral triangle of side
1.2 m. The charges are +4.0 µC, -8 µC and -6 µC as shown in the Figure below.
Calculate the magnitude and direction of the net force on each due to the other two.

2. A large electroscope is made with leaves that are 78-cm long wires with tiny 24 g
spheres at the ends. When charged, nearly all the charge resides on the sphere. If
the wires each make a 30⸰ with the vertical as shown in the Figure below, what total
charge Q must have been applied to the electroscope. (Assume the ropes have
negligible mass). Answer:
a. With what speed does it leave the hole? Answer: 𝒗 = 𝟕. 𝟒𝟗 × 𝟏𝟎𝟔 𝒎/𝒔

6. The electric field between two square metal plates is 130 N/C. The plates are 1.0
m on a side and are separated by 3.0 cm. What is the charge on each plate ?Assume
equal and opposite
Electric Potential and Electric Potential Energy
9. Two identical +95.00 µC point charges are initially 3.5 cm apart. If they are
released at the same instant from rest, how fast will they be moving if they are very
far away from each other? Assume they have identical masses of 1.00 mg.
10. A huge 4.0-F capacitor has enough stored energy to heat 2.5 kg of water from 21
to 95⸰C. What is the potential difference across the plates? Answer: V= 620 V
12. An air-filled capacitor consists of two parallel plates, each with an area of 7.60 cm2,
