Many of the suffixes and prefixes we use originally came from ancient Greek or
Latin words. Knowing the root word means you help unlock the meanings of other
words containing the root word. Root words can appear as suffixes, prefixes or in the
middle of words.
1. Root word – is the main part of a word (with no suffixes or prefixes attached).
2. Suffix – refers to a word ending. A letter or group of letters added to the end of a
word that changes the meaning or grammatical sense of the word.
The most common ´shun´ sound endings are (-tion and –sion).
Spelling rules
These nouns are often made by adding a suffix to a base word (often a verb).
If the word ends in a vowel –e, we remove the –e before adding –tion.
For example:
If you can hear the word mission inside the noun it will be spelt with a
double s.
For example:
Discuss – discussion
Possess – possession
The suffix –cian often means (one who has specific skills)
If the base word ends in –cs remove the –s before adding –ian.
1. Predict how these nouns will be spelled with the suffixes –ancy and –ency.
