Many of the suffixes and prefixes we use originally came from ancient Greek or
Latin words. Knowing the root word means you help unlock the meanings of other
words containing the root word. Root words can appear as suffixes, prefixes or in the
middle of words.

1. Root word – is the main part of a word (with no suffixes or prefixes attached).
2. Suffix – refers to a word ending. A letter or group of letters added to the end of a
word that changes the meaning or grammatical sense of the word.

Note: Many nouns end in a ´shun´ sound.

The most common ´shun´ sound endings are (-tion and –sion).

Spelling rules

a) Nouns ending in -tion

These nouns are often made by adding a suffix to a base word (often a verb).

 If the verb ends in a consonant -t, just add –ion.

For example: Act – action Diffract – diffraction

 If the word ends in a vowel –e, we remove the –e before adding –tion.

For example: Intervene – intervention

Note: If you sound out the new word you may be able to work out the spelling
adding (i):

Example: add – addition

b) Nouns ending in –sion

 If the root word ends in –se take off the e and add ion.

For example: Revise – revision

 If a base word ends in –d or –de change the –d to an –s, drop the –e if

needed, then add –ion.

For example:

Erode – erosion Pretend – pretension

c) Nouns ending in –ssion

 If you can hear the word mission inside the noun it will be spelt with a
double s.

Examples: permission, omission, remission.

 If the base word ends in -ss just add –ion.

For example:

Discuss – discussion

Possess – possession

d) Nouns ending in –cian

The suffix –cian often means (one who has specific skills)

 If the base word ends in –c just add –ian

Example: Music – musician

 If the base word ends in –cs remove the –s before adding –ian.

For example: Politics – politician Physics – physician

refer to a quality or a state of being, e.g. infant - infancy: the state of being an
infant.
