Self-Learning Module 3
Finding the Volume of Cones and Spheres
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics 6 Self-Learning Module on Finding the volume

of cones and spheres!
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics 6 Self-Learning Module on Finding the volume

of cones and spheres!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

EXPECTATIONS

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to find the volume of cones
and spheres.

Directions: Solve the following and choose the letter of the correct
answer.

1. A conical tent has a radius of 6.3 m and height of 8 m. How much

volume of air does it enclose? Use π = 3.14
A. 332.34 m³ B. 3343.2 m³ C. 3323.4 m³ D. 334.32 m³

2. Find the volume of a right circular cone-shaped building with a height

of 9 cm and a radius of 7 cm. Use π = 3.14
A. 1384.74 cm³ B. 461.85 cm³ C.1934.74 cm³ D. 461.58 cm³

3. A water tank is shaped like a sphere. It has a radius of 9 meters. How

many cubic meters of water can the tank hold? Round your answer to
the nearest whole number. Use π = 3.14
A. 3502 m³ B. 3052 m³ C. 3520 m³ D. 3025 m³

Find the volume of each solid figure.

4. A. 197.82 mm3 C. 65.94 mm3

B. 94.65 mm3 D. 198.72 mm3

5. A. 42, 390 cm3 C. 2,826 cm3

B. 14, 130 cm3 D. 3532.5 cm3
1. What is the formula in finding the volume of a pyramid?
2. What is the formula in finding the volume of a cylinder?

Think and Understand

Problem 1:

Joash wants to customize or Do It Yourself (DIY) the party hat for his
7th birthday. He prepares a right circular cone-shaped party hat with a height
of 30 cm and a radius of 15 cm. What is the volume of the party hat?

Given : radius = 15 cm
height = 30 cm

1
The volume (V) of a cone is circular base area (B) times the height
3
(h). Use π = 3.14 and r = radius
Area of the base = 3.14 x radius2 or πr²
𝟏
Thus, Volume = πr² h or πr² h
𝟑
3
= 3.14 x 15 x 15 x 30
3
= 21,195 cm3
3
Volume = 7,065 cm3 The volume of the party hat is 7, 065 cm 3 .

Problem 2:

Mr. Ernest Cruz was awarded as an

“Employee of the Year” for being a dedicated and
compassionate in his work. He works in a Natural
Gas Company. The spherical tank for natural gas
has a radius of 7 meters. How many cubic meters of
natural gas can it hold?
Given : radius = 7 meters
4
The volume of a sphere is 3 π times the cube of the radius.
Use π = 3.14 and r = radius
𝟒
Thus, volume = x π x r³ or 4 πr ³
𝟑
3
= 4 x 3.14 x 7 x 7 x 7
3
= 4, 308.08 m3
3
Volume = 1, 436.03 m3

Therefore, the spherical tank has a volume of 1, 436.03 m3.
