Assignment 1 - 2024
Question One
(a) The dependent source shown below is:
(b) If the interconnection in the figure below is valid, find the total power developed in
the circuit. If the interconnection is not valid, explain why.
Question Two
(a) Determine the current flowing through an element if the charge flow is given by
q(t) = 20e−4t cos50t C
(b) Find the charge q(t) flowing through a device if the current is:
q(t) = 20cos(10t + 6) A, q(0) = 2C
(c) If the current flowing through an element is given by
3tA, 0 t 6s
18A, 6 t 10s
i(t) =
−12A, 10 t 15s
0, t 15s
Plot the charge store in the element over 0 t 20s
Question Three
(a) The voltage and current at the terminals of the circuit element are zero for t 0 . For
t 0, they are
v = (1500t + 1) e −750t V
i = 40e−750t mA
i. Find the time when the power delivered to the circuit element is maximum.
ii. Find the maximum value of p in milliwatts.
iii. Find the total energy delivered to the circuit element in microjoules.
(b) Consider the circuit below;
i. Is the interconnection in the figure valid? Explain.
ii. Can you find the total energy developed in the circuit? Explain.
Question Four
(a) An electric stove four burners and an oven is used in preparing a meal as follows.
Burner 1: 20 minutes Burner 2: 40 minutes
Burner 3: 15 minutes Burner 4: 45 minutes
Oven: 30 minutes
If each burner is rated at 1.2 kW and the oven at 1.8 kW, and electricity cost 12
cents per kWh. Calculate the cost of electricity used in preparing the meal.
(b) In a household, a 120-W personal computer (PC) is run for 4 h/day, while a 60-W
bulb runs for 8 h/day. If the utility company (ZESCO) charges K3.0/kWh, calculate
how much the household pays per year on the PC and the bulb.
Question Five
The voltage and power values for each of the elements shown in Fig. 5 are given in Table
5.
Fig. 5 Table. 5
(a) Show that the interconnection of the elements satisfies the power check.
(b) Find the value of the current through each of the elements using the values of power
and voltage and the current directions shown in the figure.
Question Six
(a) A battery may be rated in ampere-hours (Ah). A lead-acid battery is rated at 160
Ah.
i. What is the maximum current it can supply for 40 h?
ii. How many days will it last if it discharged at 1 mA?
(b) The graph below shows the power consumption of a certain household in 1 day.
Calculate:
i. The total energy consumed in kWh.
ii. The average power per hour over the total 24-hour period.
