2024 course description
Engineering Science encompasses a vast range of subjects, from microelectronics to offshore
oil platforms, and involves the application of creative reasoning, science, mathematics (and of
course experience and common sense) to real problems. The Department of Engineering Science at Oxford has a top-level quality assessment rating for
teaching and a world-class reputation for research. Because we believe that future engineering innovation will benefit from broad foundations as well as
specialised knowledge, undergraduate teaching is based on a unified course in Engineering Science, which integrates study of the subject across the
traditional boundaries of engineering disciplines.

Internationally renowned for academic excellence, with strengths in science
and technology. It has an extremely high graduate employment rate. Due
to its metropolitan location you could end up living in halls right in the
centre of London. However it prides itself on its academic rigour, so there's
plenty of studying to do. Whilst some students complain that clubs and
societies aren't very prominent and that international students tend to
stick together, your experience is what you make it. You can end up with
friends from across the world, and most clubs and societies are run in
conjunction with other universities in London.

Cambridge is an historic university with a well-deserved reputation as one
of the best in the world. You'll work hard here and you'll be taught by
people who are real experts in their field (though it does happen that a
great academic is a not-so-great teacher). You might even have 9am
lectures on a Saturday (shocked emoji). There's also lots to do at the
university outside of studying, from the Students' Union, Footlights comedy
club, competitive rowing, music, theatre and extravagant May Balls. It's a
small town so you'll be able to walk or cycle everywhere quickly, and you'll
constantly bump into your friends, which can be a blessing or a curse. The
town is ridiculously pretty but let's be honest, it doesn't host the best
music venues, restaurants or other cultural institutions. Students still
manage to go out all week in the local clubs (weekends are left to the
locals), and run college parties, called 'bops', each term.

The University of Birmingham ticks a lot of boxes. It is a beautiful campus
university, large redbrick buildings wrapping an open green space, with
regular farmers markets, a vibrant Guild of Students and fantastic
professional programme of music, art exhibitions and comedy at the
Bramall Music Hall and world-renowned Barber Institute of Arts. The huge
student body mostly live in the surrounding neighbourhood of Selly Oak –
definitely not the most picturesque area but packed to the rafters with
excellent pubs, curry houses, shops and supermarkets. Birmingham
University is also, however, very much a city university too – it has its own
train station, and ten minutes into town you’ll find the Bullring (great for
fans of shopping), Digbeth (great for fans of art and independent culture),
Brindley Place (great for fans of fine dining and exquisite canals) and the
unforgettable Snobs nightclub (great for fans of good music and £1
Carlsbergs). Birmingham is not beautiful, but its diverse, fascinating and
varied culture is world-beating, largely overlooked and absolutely worth
digging beneath the surface for.

A Russell Group University

Unofficial overview
Warwick is located in what is essentially a big field! It is close to Coventry
and Royal Leamington Spa and there are frequent specialised bright pink
buses to take students from campus to these cities. There are some great
shops, bars, and clubs in both Leamington and Coventry, but the real
benefit of being at a campus university like Warwick is that there are also
great places in the campus itself! This means that as a fresher you will
probably live within 200 metres of all the nightlife you want as well as your
academic departments and friends' accommodation. This creates the
sense of living in a university bubble. If you do want to escape, Birmingham
is less than 30 minutes by train, and London less than 90. Warwick is part of
the elite Russell Group of universities and is typically ranked in the top 10
universities in the UK.

Unofficial overview
There's an abundance of things to do in Manchester. Alongside museums,
pubs and cafes, major clubs include Deansgate Locks, Printworks and The
Birdcage, which hosts legendary student night 'Rehab' on Wednesdays.
Manchester is also strong academically, and is amongst the very strongest
in media and film, helped by the fact that the university is close to the BBC's
new Salford base. As the university balances a strong academic reputation
with a great social scene it's often over-applied to.
