Overview
The Multi-Game CD System (or MGCD for short) was built to allow operators to install a
Dreamcast into their arcade hardware. This was done by using a board that connects the
display and controller ports of the Dreamcast to an arcade edge adaptor.
The MGCD was originally sold to arcade distributors in Japan. The system works by detecting
game over screens to subtract credit from the player and once all the credits are gone, the
system would “lock” the controls. To achieve this, DIP Switches need to be set by the operator
for the specific game that was in the console. If a game was not supported by the MGCD, then it
defaulted to a Time-Based mode where credits would buy the player more time. Once the timer
was up, the controls would “lock” themselves up again. All this additional information (credits,
time), is added as an overlay over the console original game video signal.
(NOTE: Over time, additional console support was added such as the PlayStation,
PlayStation 2, GameCube, and XBOX. These consoles, like the Dreamcast, did have
limitations on what games were supported.)
Mainboard Overview
The MGCD mainboard
1. RGB Video connector - The MGCD connects to the Dreamcast via a modified multi out
cable. This passes a 15 khz signal to the arcade monitor.
2. Controller connectors - There are two (Player 1 and Player 2) controller connectors
which use modified controller cables.
3. Memory card connector - The MGCD-B includes a memory card connector, this does
require a modified memory card daughter board which may or may not have been
included with your device.
4. Steering wheel connector - There is a proprietary steering wheel connector.
5. Volume adjustment pot - You can control the volume output by adjusting this pot on
your mainboard, left for lower and right for higher.
6. Fan connector - You can connect a 2-pin fan which the mainboard will power.

Edge Connector
(NOTE: The MGCD does require a -5 volts connection, if your existing power supply does
not have this connection you will need to upgrade your power supply. The edge
connector is not keyed and requires an adaptor or the removal of a key if installed in your
harness.)
The MGCD uses a non-standard JAMMA connector which means that it is not a plug and play
solution. This leaves two options;
1. Rewire your cabinet - if you plan on using the MGCD and only the MGCD in your
cabinet you can rewire your cabinet and connect the MGCD directly to your modified
JAMMA harness.
2. Use a JAMMA adapter - you can purchase JAMMA adapters that allow you to rewire
the adapter and keep your cabinets JAMMA harness intact.
Personally I use a universal JAMMA adapter and a CPS2 kick harness which allows me to keep
my cabinet JAMMA harness intact. It doesn’t require soldering and is also keyed (image below).
Below is a comparison of a typical JAMMA pin out and the MGCD-B pin out.
(NOTE: A full list of “supported” games is included at the end of this guide.)
Simply look at the correct console type (NTSC-J or PAL) and then adjust the DIP switches to the
correct position based on the game you want to play.
EXAMPLE: If you wanted to play Marvel VS Capcom 2 where each coin was 1 play credit with
the highest difficulty and only one round you would set the DIP switches as follows.
(NOTE: Not all games will be able to access the memory card when connected directly to
the MGCD-B and therefore it may be better to use the traditional method.)
You can also connect an additional controller to the Player 3 or Player 4 port with a memory
card connected to the controller.
The MGCD also supports the Dreamcast gun controller (HKT-7800) which can be connected
directly to the Player 1 controller port. Multiple gun controllers are also supported.
After some digging I was able to recover a screenshot of the company that sold the MGCD and
some accessories. From the images I was able to determine that the steering wheel was the
same one used on the standup Crazy Taxi cabinets.
Using the MGCD-B
There are basically two ways to use the MGCD, by the book (which is outlined above) or going
rouge (which is what I would suggest). By going rouge I mean setting it to any game and setting
it to timed play (with the maximum time selected) and then playing any game you want. This is
really the ideal way to play so long as you’re not trying to use this as an operator.
Button Mapping
The buttons are mapped as follows:
Button 1 = A Button 5 = L
Button 2 = B Button 6 = R
Button 3 = X Button 7 = C
Button 4 = Y Button 8 = Z
Buttons 7 and 8 only work on a few select games and are essentially a six button controller.
GDEMU
The MGCD-B will work with the GDEMU and GDmenu if you set the DIP switches to coin for
time play. You will need to coin up before you can use the controls. I also suggest that you
disable the force VGA setting in the GDmenu settings.
