Introduction

For many years, there was no series I watched more than The Angry Video Game Nerd.
However in the past few years the series, the people behind it and the channel that hosts it
have been the subject of criticism and ridicule. My purpose of this retrospective was to
answer 3 questions:

1: Do the classic avgn episodes (mainly from 2006-11) hold up?

2: Are the modern episodes (2017-present) that bad?
3: Is avgn good series overall?

I should clarify that before I started this retrospective I had seen every episode up to
Darkman and the first part of avgn 200.

Anyway, let's start from the start:

Season 1 (2004-06)
The first 2 episodes were made in 2004, originally as jokes that amatuar filmmaker James
Rolfe wasn't going to continue as a series until a 3rd was made in 2006 and at the request of
his friend Mike Matei; continued to make and upload episodes to YouTube throughout that
year. James did not consider the 2004 episodes as part of season 1 and instead referred to
them as pilots, though for the sake of ease I and many others put them in this season
anyway.

Episode 1: Castlevania II: Simon's Quest

And of course we have to start with one of the hardest episodes to review. For how important
this episode is to the history of online game reviews, it's also clearly not the nerd at his best
but at the same time it was made as a joke that wasn't supposed to lead to a series… Well
anyway, joke or not I'm not too big on this episode. It does have some classic moments
really only because it's the first episode but most of it is just low mic rambling about nitpicks
in a game James actually likes, if i had to compare it to anything it would be the really early
Simpsons shorts on the Tracey Ullman Show: Obviously I respect it for what it led to but I
don't think I will ever watch it again.

Episode 2: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Much better than the first episode. I feel the joke that this nerd character is acting like his
entire life has been ruined by an obscure nes game is much funnier than the idea of the last
episode. Also the first appearance of the nerd physically and his beer.

Episode 3: The Karate Kid

So this is pretty much the first actual avgn episode, and it shows. It feels like a refined
combo of the past 2 episodes but I think the series still hasn't hit his stride yet. James
admitted at some point that he was faking failing at the game in the footage, and from what
I've heard the game isn't nearly as hard as the nerd makes it look. but overall it's an
improvement from the pilots.
Episode 4: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
A decent episode. The Jessica Rabbit bit is funny and because of the short length it doesn't
overstay its welcome. You may have heard that there was an ending rant that was cut from
the episode because James forgot to record the audio, it could have been funny but I can
live without it because the ending line "I wanna nail rodger rabbit to the fucking cross" is one
of best early lines so we didn't really need another ending.

Episode 5: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Probably the first big classic episode. This one of course spawned the iconic "you can just
walk over it" scene. Overall I found it to be the funniest episode so far but I must say TMNT
on nes is a game I actually like. It has cool music ambition for an early nes game.

Episode 6: Back to the Future

Another decent early one. The running joke of this one is that the nerd says something about
the game which is then followed by a reaction clip from the movie, personally I didn't find it
very funny and there's even a version with the clips edited out but again it's short so it
doesn't get annoying.

Episode 7: McKids
Not a fan of this one. This episode feels like a step back to the simon's quest review with
most of it being James mumbling about a game that isnt even bad. If this one was 3rd I'd be
more forgiving but at this point there was clearly a quality standard James set for the series
that this episode just does not meet. I heard somewhere that James only did this one so he
could make fun of McDonald's characters but he barely even does that. The most important
thing about this episode is that it's the first appearance of the theme song, so that's a plus.

Episode 8: Wally Bear and the No! Gang

This episode is ok, well depends on what version you're talking about. The best part of this
episode is the wally bear hotline scene but its only in some versions, other than that most of
it is forgettable, no actually "press here you dumb fuck" is pretty funny.

Episode 9: Master Chu and the Drunkard Hu

The gimmick of this episode is that the nerd is joined by shit pickle, the joke is that he is a
pickle with shit on him and he says shit pickle, yeah it's not funny. The rest of the episode is
whatever and it's short so it doesn't get annoying but it's still kinda weak.

Episode 10: Top Gun

A solid early episode. This one of course has the classic "ASS!" bit, but besides that the
review is funnier and more high effort than the last 3 episodes. Also I watched the original
240p upload because the higher quality reupload removed Danger Zone playing in the
background which is an absolute disgrace.

Episode 11: Double Dragon 3

Let's face it; James made this review because he wanted to show bimmy and jimmy, at least
that's the only reason I can think of to make another forgettable review on a game that's also
not even that bad. I can't confirm but I've heard that there's a way to cheese this game so it's
not as hard as the nerd makes it look, but i'm not sure about that. otherwise meh, bimmy is
the only memorable part.
Episode 12: Friday the 13th
From this point onwards the production value of each episode increases, every episode is
around 9-10 minutes or more so no more mediocre 4 minute episodes. Anyway this episode
is easily the best so far. The jokes are strong, the skits with Jason are funny and don’t
overstay their welcome.

Episode 13: A Nightmare on Elm Street

A good continuation of the last episode. The lighting on the freddy shots looks great for 2006
YouTube and it has the “Boo! Haunted House” joke which is one of my favorites. Good
episode but I prefer Friday the 13th personally.

Episode 14: The Power Glove

I think at some point this was the most popular episode, and for good reason. This is the first
episode to not be just a review of a nes game and it feels like a breath of fresh air to see
something different. I really enjoy the hardware/accessories reviews and this one is no
exception, the anger feels genuine and has some of the best lines of the first season.

Episode 15: Chronologically Confused About Sequel Titles

This episode has become one of my favorites. There was a time when James could make a
video on something as mundane as sequel titles and somehow make it entertaining. Of
course this is the episode that almost predicted Rambo 4 being called John Rambo before it
was changed at the last minute, but other than that great episode, basically the pilot to You
Know What's Bullshit?

Episode 16: Rocky

This episode's quality varies on whatever version you watch; either the 10 minute original
version with the movies surrounding the nerd while he plays or the cut down botched dvd
version with shitty midi music (which later replaced the original on youtube when it was taken
down). The main thing the dvd version has going for it is the scene where the nerd throws
the game down the Philadelphia stairs that rocky climbs, I watched a fan edit that put that
scene in the original version so I got the best of both worlds yet it's only in 240p. Anyway the
actual episode is ok, not one of my favorites but it is the first game review as the angry video
game nerd instead of the nintendo nerd, so that's something.

Episode 17: Bible Games

This is my favorite episode of the first season, and one of my favorites of the series. I don't
know what is it about this one but it just feels so cozy and lowkey but never boring and still
filled with a lot of great lines. It's the first long episode (20 minutes) and the first to review
multiple games. To me this episode is where James started to hit his stride.

Season 1 Conclusion
Season 1 is a solid enough start to the series. Sure some of the earlier episodes are kinda
weak but for 2006 internet they were really good and it showed that James had something
special that would hopefully lead to greatness in the next few years.
Season 1 Ranking
1: Bible Games
2: Chronologically Confused About Sequel Titles
3: Friday the 13th
4: The Power Glove
5: A Nightmare on Elm Street
6: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
7: Top Gun
8: The Karate Kid
9: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
10: Rocky
11: Back to the Future
12: Wally Bear and the No! Gang
13: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
14: Double Dragon 3
15: Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
16: Master Chu and the Drunkard Hu
17: McKids

Season 2 (2007-08)
This is the first season to have episodes aired on GameTrailers first before being on
youtube. Season 2 is basically James' first contract with GameTrailers from early 2007 to
early 2008. Also the TMNT 3 review is here, it's not part of the contract but it really has
nowhere else to go.

Episodes 18 & 19: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III

(for multi-part episodes, I'll review them as one as it's much easier). Anyway season 2
begins strongly with one of my favorite episodes. You can tell how passionate James was
about these movies and his anger towards it feels so genuine. The scene where he destroys
the vhs is also one of my favorite scenes of the series.

Episode 20: Atari 5200

Another great episode. As someone who has since got a CRT TV with a few old consoles
hooked up to it, I find this episode more relatable now. In general this episode has some
great physical comedy while demonstrating why the console sucks so much. oh and this is
the first episode to have the current version of the theme song, so that's neat

Episodes 21-23: Ghostbusters

Enjoyable enough 3 parter however I do feel like it runs a little long for my liking, you could
probably cut part 2 and the genesis game review out and it'd be better. Good episodes but I
usually only revisit part 1.
Episode 24: Spiderman
Kyle is hilarious as Spiderman in this episode. It's really impressive how much good material
they got out of improvising while playing the games, it makes me wish Kyle got a few more
episodes. This one also has my one of my favorite lines of the series:
"Thats the super bomb!"
"The super bomb? Well theres bombs in the game, why cant that bomb look like a bomb?"
"It's fucking Spiderman!"

Episode 25: Sega CD

A good one, not among the best but still enjoyable. Like I said before I love the console
reviews so this one works well but the main problem is that the game reviews are pretty
shallow but that's excusable because there's really not much to say about those fmv games.
This is the episode that has the full 3 minute intro for some reason.

Episode 26: Sega 32X

I like this one much more than the Sega CD episode. It's a short one and the reviews are
pretty basic but the actual console overview and discussions on its failure is what carries it.
The power adapter box rant is also great and unfortunately still true 15 years later; can
someone explain to me why the original ps1 has a normal power adapter but the smaller
second model has one of those big ass boxes? Now that's bullshit.

Episode 27: Silver Surfer

I love this one. The rage is strong without feeling forced like in some later episodes. This
episode has so many great moments: "you die, die, die, die, die, die, die, die" "I cant touch
that red pot!?" and the shot of the nerd lying in defeat like Silver Surfer in the game. This one
I think is a pretty good introduction for new viewers.

Episode 28: Die Hard

9/11. Anyway this one is decent. it's a bit on the short side but it has some good lines. Alright
I'm sorry these early reviews are very dull but there isn't that much to say about some of
these early episodes, it's like explaining why a classic era simpsons episode is so good.

Episode 29: Independence Day

It's weird to think the Playstation wasn't that old when this episode came out besides that
this episode is just ok. It's the first ps1 game reviewed on the show and I kinda feel like that's
the only reason why james did this one, that and getting a short episode out for
independence day.

Episode 30: The Simpsons

Honestly, a pretty weak episode. I happen to be a big Simpsons nerd so I kinda wish James
reviewed way more Simpsons games then just these 2 such as Bart's Nightmare or Virtual
Bart, I will kinda excuse this because this is when most of his reviews were nes games. But
just wait until we get to the Bartman episode, I will not be nice to that one. Not awful but it
just feels like such missed potential.
Episode 31: Bugs Bunny’s Birthday Blowout
This was my favorite episode at some point and while it's not anymore, it's still a fantastic
one. This is probably the most iconic episode of the show mainly for the scenes of the nerd
beating up Bugs. It's not exactly high class comedy but just the concept of a nerd violently
beating up a guy in a bunny suit and then shitting on his face makes me laugh every time.

Episode 32: Atari Porn

Ah, here it is; the mystical episode not on the Cinemassacre YouTube channel. I remember
watching this one when I was 12 thinking I was committing some federal crime or something,
nothing but good memories. Besides that this is another really great episode, those bizzare
porn games were perfect nerd material and most of the jokes landed well. I should also
mention that this was the most viewed episode on GameTrailers, sex sells I guess.

Episode 33: Nintendo Power

This episode is cool because it has an owl, and owls are cool. Another really good episode,
like bible games I enjoy the lowkey tone and nostalgic feel of this one and for some reason
the nerd saying "wow, what an asshole" sticks in my mind years later.

Episode 34: Fester’s Quest

There was a time where James took the effort to dress up as every member of the Addams
Family, those days are long gone. Well, in any case this one is a pretty standard but
enjoyable classic nerd episode. mhmm, yeah, yup, wow.

Episode 35: Texas Chainsaw Massacre

So I've never seen Texas Chainsaw Massacre so the reference is kinda lost on me but I
actually still enjoy that one. The hillbilly character is funny and Mike as the obsessive fan is
pretty great too, I didn't even know it was him until I saw the credits. This is how you make a
good parody if the episode can stand on its own without having to know the source material.

Episode 36: Halloween

I like this one even more than the last, the review is funnier, the storyline is enjoyable and
the Michael Myers jumpscare actually got me the first time I saw it. Also those kids are in
their 20s now I think, time is crazy. Oh and this line is one of my favorites:
"How about frankenstien's monster?"
"It's alive! It's alive! How about It's ass! It's ASSSS!"

I laugh at the dumbest shit.

Episode 37: Dragon’s Lair

This episode managed to be the most average episode ever, I have absolutely nothing to
say about it. The ending joke was kind of amusing I guess… This episode isn't bad or
anything but there's nothing special about it at all.
Episodes 38 & 39: An Angry Nerd Christmas Carol
James clearly split this episode into 2 parts so he can get out of his 2 episodes a month
contract, the actual christmas carol parody doesn't start until the end of part 1 and it cuts off
oddly. Besides that this is a good christmas special but it always felt a little on the short side
even with both parts combined together. Also the voice filter on the ghosts makes their
dialogue harder to hear so thanks.

Episode 40: Chronologically Confused About the Legend of Zelda Timeline

This was a previously unreleased episode made back in 2006, and honestly I see why. Yeah
I wasn't feeling this one, it's not bad but the anger feels forced and it's a very forgettable
early episode. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I'm not a big Zelda fan, but I've
enjoyed many avgn episodes about franchises I'm not that into. Also the youtube upload has
some noticeable interlacing problems and they never did a "higher quality" upload for some
reason.

Episode 41: Rambo

Another pretty average episode. I like the rants about passwords and the titles of the Rambo
movies but actual review is kind of meh, probably because the games the nerd reviews
really don't look that bad. This one's basically just James thinking "well a new Rambo is
coming out so I might as well just knock this game off the list now".

Season 2 Conclusion
Season 1 was good, but season 2 is definitely a big step up. Most of the episodes feel more
high effort and substantial. There were some episodes that were just ok but none of them
were ever that boring or frustrating.

Season 2 Ranking
1: Spiderman
2: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III
3: Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout
4: Silver Surfer
5: Atari 5200
6: Nintendo Power
7: Atari Porn
8: Halloween
9: Sega 32X
10: Ghostbusters
11: Texas Chainsaw Massacre
12: Sega CD
13: An Angry Nerd Christmas Carol
14: Fester's Quest
15: Die Hard
16: Rambo
17: Independence Day
18: Dragon's Lair
19: Chronologically Confused About the Legend of Zelda Timeline
20: The Simpsons
Season 3 (2008-09)
Season 3 is James' second contract with GameTrailers from early 2008 to early 2009. This
is what many fans consider to be the best season of the series and honestly I'm pretty
excited to revisit some of these episodes so let's just get right into it.

Episode 42: Virtual Boy

Season 3 kicks off with a console review, and an enjoyable one at that. I don't really have a
lot to say about it but I will point out the jack bros review that was added later was clearly
filmed in the later nerd room so it ends up being kind of inconsistent like the nerd just
teleported to that nerd room than back to the last one. 42 reviews in and this is what I come
up with.

Episode 43: The Wizard of Oz

This episode was synced to the dark side of the moon like the theory involving the original
movie but I've never tried to see if it actually works. Anyway this is another good episode,
mike's cowardly lion is pretty funny and the review is solid. The only thing I'm not sure about
is the lion shitting the game on the roof, I could probably do without that mental image.

Episodes 44 & 45: Double Vision

Now this is one of my favorite episodes. It's another console review and possibly the best. It
includes so many great moments: b-17 bomber, the giant ass power adapter for the
colecovision, the ps3 adapter to play xbox games. Oh and Kyle's double vision cover goes
hard. Overall an amazing episode that shows the nerd during his peak.

Episode 46: The Wizard and Super Mario Bros. 3

The opening with all the fan covers of the theme song gave me some old youtube nostalgia
even though I'm just barely old enough to even remember that time. Anyway this is another
fantastic episode. It shows that James was able to get a lot of material out of good games if
he was creative enough, something that I'm not sure is possible anymore. I watched the
original version with the wizard review and honestly I recommend watching the later version
with it removed because it's not very interesting or needed.

Episode 47: NES Accessories

Yet another really good episode. This one Is the most viewed episode to date and it very
much deserves it. The jokes are strong, the reviews are good and for some reason I always
have "Rolling Rock on the Roll N' Rocker!" in my head, oh and obligatory "I fucking love
Konami" line didn't age well.

Episode 48: Indiana Jones Trilogy

Remember when people were actually excited for Crystal Skull? Anyway this is a good one.
It's yet another "new movie in series is coming out so I'll make a video on the games" but it's
not bad by any means. And did you know that Irate Gamer actually beat the nerd to the
punch on reviewing Temple of Doom on nes? He even did the shot where he's quickly
swiping the cartridge off like in the movie. Obviously who gives a fuck who reviews what first
but I just wanted to point that out.
Episode 49: Star Trek
Is it just me or does this episode feel really short? like it feels like it ends before it really
starts. It's still a solid episode with some amusing star trek like wording, a fight against mike
as some trek creature. The nerd also for once spares a game he actually doesn't think is that
bad instead of the usual ending rant.

Episode 50: Superman

Stooooocks?!? Anyway this is another good one, and a pretty angry review. I feel like at this
point James started to realize the comedy potential of the anger as it really helps to elevate
these next few episodes. Other than that there's not much to say.

Episode 51: Superman 64

This episode is sort of a transitional one into the (I think) current nerd room, which again sort
of makes this one inconsistent in that the nerd is teleporting between 2 rooms. Well the
episode is good regardless so again who cares. it’s the first nintendo 64 review and it has
good anger and jokes (“looks like superman is stroking his superdick”). I don’t want to get
ahead of myself but despite this episode being 11 years younger, it outdoes its revisit in
about every way. Well we’re a quarter way there, my brain is starting to melt and theres a
fucking fly buzzing around my room.

Episodes 52 & 53: Batman

Something I never noticed before is that the intro to part 1 shows clips of the nerd reacting to
the new room, that was a nice touch. Anyway This is yet another one of my favorite
episodes, the Batman forever controls rant might actually be the best of the entire series and
Mike as the Joker is in my opinion his best role ever. This to me is the pure essence of what
made classic avgn so good.

Episode 54: Deadly Towers

So I've heard a few people refer to this episode as the weakest classic avgn, so this might
be an unpopular opinion when I say that I really like this one. Basically the gimmick of this
one is that it's a compilation of reviews submitted by fans. But despite not being written by
james and/or mike it still manages to have some very funny lines, "we have 50 cheap-ass
hoes", the nerd cursing in (I think) german, and my favorite line, "the last time I saw towers
this deadly is when they decided that the horses needed more fibre in their diets" I also want
to say that when I heard the first half of that line I thought It was going to be a 9/11 joke.

Episode 55: Battletoads

Somehow season 3 just keeps delivering bangers of episodes. This is yet another one of my
favorites. It perfectly demonstrates the experience of playing a hard game with a friend, and
Kyle is back and as funny as ever. The pause music bop is one of the all time classic jokes
and one of my favorites. Definitely top 10 or even 5 material here.

Episode 56: Dick Tracy

Man I miss when nerd episodes felt like they had actual genuine rage in them, not to get
ahead of myself but most of the time in later episodes the nerd's anger feels tired and whiny.
This feels like the angriest the nerd has ever been and it really helps to elevate this one into
greatness. Another high ranking episode.
Episode 57: Dracula
Typical halloween episode. Honestly despite being decent I really don't have much to say
about this or the Frankenstein one. This one does have the debut of Fred Fuchs, a joke that
I never found to be THAT funny and by that I mean it's funny the first time but I just don't
understand why the both avgn adventures and the black tiger episode treated Fred Fuchs as
the nerd's long time enemy when its really only referenced like 4 times in the series.

Episode 58: Frankenstein

Like Dracula, this one is ok too though I prefer the former. The set in the opening is actually
really impressive and that's really all I can say about it. When I was watching this one my
brain was like "oh god im dreading writing the review because I just can't think of anything to
say" so i'll just leave it as is.

Episodes 59-61: CD-i

Oh boy, a 3 part episode, that means I can knock 3 episodes down in 1 review! Well anyway
we have yet another console review and a pretty good one, not amongst my favorites or
anything but still a good trilogy of episodes. The mixed bag rant at the end of part 2 is
definitely the highlight. Oh and I forgot to mention James spent $700 on 1 set of episodes,
different times.

Episode 62: Bible Games 2

This episode is in 720p HD, as an “experiment” apparently. I don’t remember if this was a
theory I came up with or not but I think James was renting an HD camera for something else
and he decided to use it for this episode whatever who the fuck cares. This is a good
Christmas special however it doesn't compare to the first bible games. This is the fourth
episode in a row to feature the CD-i, yeah i'm running dry of things to talk about.

Episode 63: Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker

Weird to think Michael was still alive when this episode came out. Anyway this is another
pretty standard one, nothing special about it. Am I the only one who kind of likes
Moonwalker? Like it's no masterpiece or anything but I think it’s a fun time.

Episode 64: Milon's Secret Castle

For as good as season 3 is, it ends on probably its weakest episode. It’s not outright bad or
anything but it feels a lot like a filler one, I know it sounds weird to call an episode in a show
with next to no continuity or story filler but let me explain; I class a filler avgn episode as one
with very little live action segments and usually is a review of some obscure nes game (day
dreamin davey and kid kool are prime examples), usually these were done quickly
(sometimes even written and edited by mike) so that james can spend time on an more
ambitious episode. This one isn’t bad but it's not one I (or I think anyone) often revisit.

Season 3 Conclusion
At the beginning of this season I said that many consider this to be the best season of the
series, and I’d have to agree (I think I haven’t rewatched seasons 4 & 5 yet so they might be
better). So many of my top favorite episodes are in here and the weaker ones are still better
than the weaker ones in seasons 1 & 2. You can tell by the end of this season I was running
out of things to talk about sorry about that but sometimes it’s hard to explain why a good
episode of a show is good without sounding redundant.
Season 3 Ranking
1: Batman
2: Battletoads
3: Double Vision
4: The Wizard and Super Mario Bros. 3
5: NES Accessories
6: Dick Tracy
7: Superman 64
8: Virtual Boy
9: Indiana Jones Trilogy
10: Bible Games 2
11: CD-i
12: Deadly Towers
13: Superman
14: The Wizard of Oz
15: Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker
16: Star Trek
17: Dracula
18: Frankenstein
19: Milon’s Secret Castle

Season 4 (2009-10)
Season 4 is James' third contract with GameTrailers from early 2009 to early 2010. Like
season 3 this is also a big fan favorite season and i'm also pretty excited to rewatch it, which
to me shows that the classic avgn episodes currently are still enjoyable in 2022 (unlike say
smosh, annoying orange or equals 3 which can only be enjoyed by nostalgia and nothing
else). I am however not looking forward to the writeups I have to do for this season, at 25
episodes and a total runtime of about 5 hours this is the longest season of avgn to date, and
as you could tell I was struggling to get material out of some of the season 3 episodes and I
expect it to be the same way here. Enough rambling lets begin.

Episodes 65-66: Atari Jaguar

Season 4 begins with another console review like season 3, and season 2 as well if you
don't count tmnt 3, was that intentional? Well this is a very good start to the season. I love it
when the nerd can mix humourous reviews with actual gaming history lessons and make it
entertaining. For some reason in recent years the "where did you learn to fly?" bitch has
returned multiple times… why? The joke wasn't that funny and it's even less funny when you
keep doing it afterwards.

Episode 67: Metal Gear

Ehhhh an alright one. I haven't really played any of the metal gear games (yeah I know, I'm
stupid) so I can't really speak on anything about the game or the review, at least it didn't
make me feel asleep.
Episode 68: Odyssey
I'm pretty split on this episode. For the most part I like the overview of the console and some
of the jokes however it suffers from 1 major problem; the nerdy turd is really annoying and
unfunny. What's weirder is that James recorded himself playing the Odyssey with Mike which
is where the gameplay footage comes from, I would've preferred if Mike was in the episode
as an semi exaggerated version of himself like a precursor to Motherfucker Mike from Board
James, hell I'll take shit pickle over the nerdy turd.

Episode 69: X-Men

Another decent episode. Instead i'll take this time to point out how much I like the lighting in
these classic episodes, later seasons liked to have a ton of camera lights to make the nerd
room as bright as possible, however i prefer the look of this era with the dark, man-cave feel
and the tvs and commodore 64 on in the background being the lights honestly looks pretty
nice and cozy.

Episode 70: The Terminator

Yet another pretty standard one. I would like to thank James for introducing me to the
Terminator Sega CD soundtrack that shit goes hard. There really isn't much I want to say
about this one, wrench bit was funny I guess.

Episode 71: Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Basically the same as the previous one but I do want to commend the lighting at the ending
part when he throws the game down like the movie, it looks really good especially for 2009
and I'm saying mainly because there's a part in a later episode a decade that references the
same scene and it looks much worse, oops.

Episode 72: Transformers

For some reason this episode really sticks out to me in a good way. It's one that always
comes to mind when I think of great classic avgn episodes. The review is strong, the game
makes good nerd material and the bit where the nerd sees the random robot dinosaur boss
and just casually says "oh it's Mechagodzilla, I should've known" is one of my favorite lines
in the series. Really good episode, top 30 for sure.

Episode 73: Mario Is Missing!

You know it's an odd episode when "koopas capture king kong" is the most I laugh at it. Not
to say it's bad but… yeah I often forget about this one. I've noticed that there seems to be a
sort of streak of episodes that I found to be just ok (metal gear, x-men, terminator and this
one) Now I don't think any of these episodes are bad but they're definitely not among my
favorites. Apparently James hit some kind of burnout around this time so that might be why.

Episode 74: Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties

Funny how the moment I point out a slight dip in quality it immediately spikes up, this is one
of the best avgn episodes ever and I think most of us are in agreement on that. I don't really
know how to explain why it's so good other than it's just really funny, possibly the funniest of
the series. The game was so awful that it seemed to almost break the nerd and that ends up
creating so many great moments. But I must say, am I the only one who thinks the second
controller port being on the first controller is a pretty neat concept? It means less wires on
the ground.
Episode 75: Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle
And here we have another one of my favorite episodes. The fight choreography is actually
really good, especially for 2009 internet videos. The jokes and references to classic looney
tunes are a great touch too, oh and Kyle's here let's fuckin gooo. It's weird that birthday
blowout used to be my favorite episode when this one in retrospect is so much better.
Watching this one also reminded me how important the nerd room is to the series, having
that one room with distinct areas like the nes shelf, commodore desk, the old tv with the
pong consoles and the main console setup really helps make the series feel more
memorable than other review shows, like you're in the nerd room with the nerd as lame as
that sounds. Also the bugs woody woodpecker hybrid thing is fucking terrifying.

Episode 76: Super Pitfall

A very, very basic episode. Obviously that makes sense given how big the last one is but
personally I feel this one just isn't very memorable other than the sharades and death
insurance bits. Actually the biggest problem I have with this episode isn't even james' fault
but it's that the background music in the game is really fucking annoying to me.

Episode 77: Godzilla

Originally I didn't think much of this episode, but now looking back it's quite a good one
actually. Nowadays the nes godzilla game is now known for a creepypasta for some reason
like why of all games… nevermind. I don't need to say much about this one, it's just a good
solid basic episode. Way better than super pitfall.

Episode 78: Wayne’s World

This episode does a similar thing to the back to the future and original rocky episodes where
most of the jokes are pointing out something in the game then having a clip from the movie
react to it. Personally i'm not a big fan of that kind of humour so this one doesn't do much for
me especially since I haven't watched the movie. Oh and obvious "movie is about guys
making a show in their basement only for it to be taken over by a corporation and lose its
charm like the nerd series would become later". As if i'm not aware.

Episodes 79-82: Castlevania Retrospective

And here we land on a major fan favorite episode, if you ask someone about the best avgn
episodes they'll probably say "who the fuck is avgn?" or maybe they will bring up this one.
And yeah, I agree with basically everyone this is an amazing retrospective with a great
sense of passion and nostalgia without ever really feeling manipulative. I'd go as far as to
say this is my favorite of the avgn halloween specials (though next year's one is a very close
second) and one I make sure to rewatch every year.

Episode 83: Little Red Hood

Man the anger is real on this one, possibly even more than dick tracy. This one's good, it has
some funny lines (for some reason I lost it at big bird's ballsack, I think I have problems). And
this is the first episode to have the shelves behind the couch, very important information I
know. One last thing is that this one has an interesting camera angle at some parts where
the camera is behind the couch and you can see the tv in the background, it's a nice angle
which I wish was used a few more times.
Episode 84: Winter Games
Standard christmas episode. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this is one of only 2 episodes
to show the other rooms of james' house outside the nerd room. Really not much to say
here, "happy shut the fuck up" is the best thing to come out of this one, even though it was
actually from a you know what's bullshit episode.

Episode 85: Street Fighter 2010

All this time I've spent watching avgn and we're only now reached… the start of the last
decade, welp. So this is a pretty enjoyable episode (sick of me saying that yet?) however I
feel the games the nerd covers while he takes a break from street fighter 2010 are way more
interesting than that game, maybe he should've made this one into "bad street fighter
games" or something, oh well still a good episode.

Episode 86: Hydlide

A very average episode, let's be thankful that this episode never got a long boring sequel 8
years later. This is another one of those "filler episodes" I mentioned, in fact I'm pretty sure
Mike said on a livestream that he mostly played and wrote this one. Not awful, just a very
forgettable overall well besides the annoyingly repetitive music, that's all I think of when I
think of this game and episode.

Episode 87: Ninja Gaiden

This is another very popular episode, and I can see why. Kevin is very funny as the ninja and
actual storyline works on its own while also being a homage to movies from the time the
game came out (according to James). I also like the twist at the end where even the ninja
struggles at the game he trained the nerd at and gives up.

Episode 88: Swordquest

I really like this one, mainly because it's so unique and interesting. It's pretty much a gaming
historian video with a slight nerd touch that makes it one that sticks in my mind a lot.
Someone also pointed out that outside of the theme song there are no swears in this
episode, I wonder if maybe this was an unrelated mini documentary video and then James
last second turned it into an avgn episode? Well in any case I still enjoy this one a lot.

Episode 89: Pong Consoles

Season 4 began with a console review and also ends with one, huh. This was one of the first
avgn episodes I ever saw though it was years after it came out and for me personally it was
exactly what I was looking for (don't ask why an 11 year old wanted to watch videos about
old pong machines in 2015-16). I love how the nerd has this simultaneous respect for these
old consoles while also making fun of them for their simplicity. Both this episode and
swordquest show how good the nerd can be when he's examining pre-nes gaming history
and like I said before I wish we got more of that.
Season 4 Conclusion
So comparing this one to season 3 is interesting, I think season 3 is the most consistently
great season while season 4 has episodes that are better than most season 3 episodes but
also ones that are weaker, mostly in the first half (though none of them are actually bad). So
do I prefer the consistent season 3 or the highs and lows of season 4? Honestly i'm going
with season 4 though to be fair that's only by like a hair. Both seasons are fantastic, that's
really my main point here. Take a shot everytime I say season or episode.

Season 5 (2010-11)
Season 5 is James' fourth contract with GameTrailers from about mid 2010 to mid 2011.
Unlike the last 3 this contract only had James make roughly 1 episode a month instead of 2
mostly due to burnout and his desire to start production on the avgn movie. This is also what
some fans consider to be the last season of the show's golden age so I guess we'll see if
that's the case.

Episode 90: Action 52

I like this one, it used to be one of my favorite episodes however nowadays I wouldn't really
agree with that, personally it's just a little bit too long and repetitive for my liking. Good
episode, but I don't feel like watching it ever again.
Episode 91: Cheetahmen
Definitely more enjoyable than the action 52 episode, I guess the cheetahmen games make
much better review material than the 51 other games? Though I should mention the
infamous cheetahmen 2 play or die scandal, remember when this was the most controversial
thing related to cinemassacre? I wish I could go back to that time. From what I've gathered
James was tricked by some obvious conman into promoting his shady cheetahmen 2
reproduction cart fundraiser, I remember James released a statement saying that people
were telling him its a scam but for some reason sided with the conman after being convinced
by his arguments. James is probably a nice guy but good god can he be dense sometimes.

Episode 92: Game Glitches

Best season 5 episode so far. Honestly i'm glad the glitch gremlin takes a backseat for the
middle part of this episode otherwise he would've got annoying. Otherwise I enjoy the
different showcases of glitches which makes it a little more memorable than the average
game review. That glitched opening gets me everytime thinking my system crashed or I'm
going schizo.

Episode 93: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

This episode was basically Mike's passion project. He apparently played a good chunk of the
game and wrote the script. Well it shows as this is another great one. I said a while ago now
that I'm not the biggest Zelda fan but I like the more in-depth review compared to other
episodes and the jokes about the game's logic. Much better than the timeline episode and
maybe even better than the cdi one.

Episode 94: Back to the Future Re-Revisited

This one has the nerd re-reviewing games he did early on in the series and I feel it's a
welcome idea to try and refine some of those earlier rougher episodes. Mike also did an
amazing job with the title cards here. I'll put this one above most of the season so far for
having the best reviews and jokes (jessica rabbit sex hotline always kills me).

Episode 95: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Revisited

It's been 12 years and I still want to know about puppy dogs in France in 1951. When I first
saw this episode years ago I found it boring, younger me must've been fucking stupid as
now I think it's one of the best episodes of the series. The pure passion and hatred of the
game is delivered really well through the review and rants (the opening rant alone is one of
the best). It's also a really funny episode. The drunken rant about Jekyll's wedding is one of
my favourites.

Episode 96: Lester the Unlikely

A pretty average episode however with a few good bits sprinkled in. Mostly just the flowers
of robert maplethorpe part and the bag of shit called lester the unlikely 5. I honestly don't
know what else to say about lester the unlikely so i'll just quit while i'm ahead.
Episode 97: How the Nerd Stole Christmas
So apparently some people don't like this episode, and while I understand why that could be
because it's so different, I'd have to disagree. Bible Games is still my favorite of avgn
christmas specials but this one ranks second. James did a great job of reviewing games in
rhyme, Mike did a great job with the art, Bear McCreary did a really great job with the music
(you may have noticed that the instrumentals of the 3 verses of the song use soundfonts
similar to the atari 2600, nes and genesis). The moral of this episode about getting
enjoyment out of making fun of shit games/media in general is one that I love and follow, I
just got done watching smosh the movie.

Episode 98: Day Dreamin’ Davey

This episode… kinda sucks. Most of it is just James doing a 10 minute dull walkthrough of
some mediocre forgotten nes game with pretty lame jokes. The only funny thing here is the
decapitated teacher joke but that's really it. This is the prime example of a filler episode, for a
long time it was my least favorite episode and while some later ones have probably
dethroned it by now I still do not enjoy this one at all.

Episode 99: Star Wars Games

Weird it took this long for the nerd to get to star wars games but here it is, and it's a good
one too. This one doesn't have all that much to it I just really like the jokes: the beer droid,
the beat a game button, the nerd listing off fake star wars games and one of the nerds best
lines when he made up a game about disco, "should be called disco-fuck yourself"

Episode 100: R.O.B. the Robot

So here it is, the big 1-0-0, and we got a lot to talk about on this one. First of all the show is
finally in hd… not really it's actually 16:9 480p, points for trying? Ok let's actually talk about
the episode. So this happens to be James' favorite episode of avgn and while I wouldn't go
that far I still really like it. The comedy with the nerd's impatience with R.O.B. is great and the
gyro bit is classic. However the final "epic" battle is… ok, it feels a bit like a rehash of the
mario 3 one and usually when youtube reviewers do stuff like this it ends up being incredibly
lame though I don't feel that way here. I do think the whole arc of the nerd deciding that he
enjoys reviewing shitty games works well for a milestone episode like this (even though the
christmas one a few episodes ago did a similar thing). Great episode just not amongst my
very favorites.

Episode 101: Spielberg Games

This is often mistaken as a season 6 episode but no trust me it's season 5. Well whatever,
this episode is just decent. It has some alright jokes (mostly in the 3do game). Of course this
one has the nerd finally trying to conquer his fear of e.t. on atari 2600 at the end which of
course led into the avgn movie which came out soon after as a series finale to high acclaim.
That is what happened right?

Season 5 Conclusion
This season was very enjoyable for the most part. It's not as good as 3 & 4 but I might
actually put it above 2 and I would consider it part of the golden age. Its shorter length made
it easier for me to spend a night binge watching it and I think that applies to most of the
seasons after this one.
Season 5 Ranking

Season 6 (2011)
Because the avgn movie ended up being more challenging and would take way longer than
James expected he signed a short 5th and final contract with GameTrailers for 6 episodes in
6 months in the second half of 2011. But there's only 5 here so figure that one out (There's a
reason but no one cares).

Episode 102: The Making of an Angry Video Game Nerd Episode

This episode is very outdated now. You can tell these days of the 4 steps to making the nerd
episode James only does the recording and maybe sometimes the writing and playing. Well
besides that I find this one to be really enjoyable, however it's clearly not for everyone as I'm
not sure how many Jimmy Normies out there care about this stuff, but I do. To me I find
behind the scenes stuff like this to be really interesting and entertaining so this is right up my
alley, more like up your ass. Well, we're now halfway there, send help please

Episode 103: Kid Kool

The only amusing thing about this episode is this line: "He needs 7 different herbs to cure
him, I bet the game designers were smoking 7 different herbs". Yeah this one isn't great.
Weirdly enough It's a lot like the barbie demo review from the making of episode so I wonder
if that was intentional to show the basic formula of a nerd episode that the making of
established, but that's what the barbie review was so why do this one like that too? Maybe
that's not the case, maybe the nerd formula is just running dry (with it even including a very
forced feeling simon's quest comparison). Though this episode also has a sort of gimmick:
the nerd gives names to the 7 problems with the game and calls it the 7 deadly sins, it's not
very interesting. I mean the bin throw shot was at least something… I think. The jokes are
weak, the review is short and the game is just not interesting. It feels like an episode from
early 2006 that was put on the shelf for a couple of years. I'd put this one over day dreamin'
davey but not by much.
Episode 104: Nintendo World Championships
So here we have a story-based episode and one that seems to be pretty divisive. For one
thing it's the first episode to be a collaboration with another youtuber, who's it going to be?
Nostalgia Critic? Jontron? uh… Irate Gamer? No, it's Pat the NES Punk, alright show of
hands who actually heard of Pat before watching this episode? …no one as I expected. Now
I actually used to watch pat, mostly I just listened to his podcast but after said podcast clips
started clogging up my sub box and some of his uhm… interesting takes I unsubscribed.
Now despite all of that I still really like this one. The nerd and Pat actually have a pretty good
and funny dynamic with Pat being pompous and smug while the nerd is more realistic but
short-tempered with them both screwing each other over trying to get the nwc carts but
having it backfire. I also like how the 2 represents the 2 sides of collecting, the "oh my god I
have the rare thing i'm so cool" and "I'm just going to stare at my collection and not do
anything with it" I constantly switch between both sides so I can relate.

Episode 105: Dark Castle

A pretty basic halloween special but a surprisingly strong episode. I don't know how this one
turned out so funny, maybe it's because the game was so horrible that it made for perfically
ripe nerd material. There's a lot of line's here I love, "You have a better chance of controlling
the weather than you do in this game" is probably my favorite. This is also the first episode to
be shot in actual HD (besides bible games 2) and it looks great though I'll probably get used
to it again in a few episodes.

Episode 106: Bible Games 3

Um, was anyone asking for a Bible Games 3? This one just feels like leftover scraps of the
other 2 ones and its nowhere near as good. Now that doesn't mean it's bad, there are some
good jokes in this one mainly in the bible adventures genesis review for some reason and of
course my highlight is the nerd searching for ass in the bible. Other than that it's just an
unnecessary sequel that was only made to be the christmas special for that year.

Season 6 Conclusion
Season 6 is odd… I think its the weakest season so far though it's not bad by any means, it's
just ok. And it's only 5 episodes so it's mostly harmless. Really nothing special but not
terrible, is this the first step in the show's decline? …I don't know we'll see.

Season 6 Ranking

Season 7 (2012-13)
After season 6 James left to film the avgn movie in california, puting the avgn series on a
short hiatus. However after filming was complete James returned home to continue the
series. From this point the seasons get a lot more simplistic in the way they're grouped as
the series was no longer under contracts by GameTrailers (mainly because at this point
youtube ad revenue was good enough to make a living off videos, rendering having paid
contracts for site exclusivity pointless). Season 7 is every episode from 2012 & 2013, it's 2
years long probably because 2012 only had 3 episodes. This season is also what some fans
consider to be their dropping point in the series, however that may just have been them
burning out on the nerd after 6 years. Maybe they're right, let's find out.

Episode 107: Schwarzenegger Games

This feels like a sort of soft reboot of avgn. I don't know how exactly to describe it but it feels
similar to the older episodes but with some kind of modern twist (and by modern I mean over
10 years ago now) but anyway I enjoy this one for feeling like a refresh of the series. I was
scared watching the kid kool episode thinking the nerd may have started to get stele but
honestly this episode shows to me that the nerd is starting to get new blood that hopefully
will continue throughout the season; the jokes are funnier the reviews feel in depth and it
also feels like the nerd hasn't been angry like this in a while now.

Episode 108: Ghosts n’ Goblins

Another good one. Has some great rage moments and funny lines. Really there isn't much to
it but this episode did give me a sad revelation: this is the first episode at the time I'm writing
this to be less than 10 years old which means there's still a decade's worth of episodes to
get through, fuck.

Episode 109: Atari Sports

Now this episode is fantastic, it might actually be in my opinion the funniest episode of the
series. The rant about football at the beginning is probably my favorite avgn rant of all time.
Weirdest thing is that I'm not even a big sports fan but I still manage to laugh at so many
jokes in this episode. It kind of makes me wish james did a few more atari episodes, I don't
think he's reviewed an atari game since maybe the berenstain bears.

Episode 110: Ikari Warriors

And here we have another fantastic episode, this is the third in what I call the "Kyle trilogy"
(spiderman, battletoads and this one) and while I prefer the other two, it's still really good. I
said back in the other Kyle episodes that James and Kyle have such a great dynamic while
playing a game with the battletoads one representing the experience of playing a hard game
with 2 players and this one here representing playing a game cooperatively but your friend
gives up early on and just starts saying dumb shit while you play, and it's really funny. One
thing that elevates this one so highly is that James kept in takes where you can see them
laughing and that helps show how much fun James used to have making these episodes.
Episode 111: Toxic Crusaders
This is an episode a lot of people don't like, but personally I'm split on. So this guest stars
Llyod Kaufman, creator of the toxic crusaders, am I the only one who's never heard of Lloyd,
the movie or the cartoon? Maybe it's just because im young or James assumed his audience
had a decent knowledge on b-movies. So what do I think of this one? well I find this one to
be inconsistent in terms of it's comedy, some of Llyod's joke are really funny and some of
them are duds. But the main thing many people (including myself) dislike about the episode
is the ending. I don't usually mind gross-out humour but this one goes just a little bit too far
for my liking, the final scene of Llyod and the nerd shitting and barfing on the game is just
really awkward, forced and worst of all not funny. Decent episode but there's a reason I
usually leave before it ends. This exchange is great though:
Nerd: What's with that other cloud that's pissing on you?
Llyod: Please keep my personal life out of this.

Episode 112: Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

A standard but strong episode, of all the ljn reviews this one is probably the best. The ending
rant is definitely the highlight and one of my favorite nerd rants and many of the jokes are
good too ("hey kids, wanna play bill & ted? just go around slamming into shit you'll enjoy
that"). For some reason the "hey, wanna listen to some tunes" bit became a meme a few
years ago, I have no idea why but it's funny.

Episode 113: Tiger Electronic Games

I'm not 100% sure but I think this was the first avgn episode I ever watched though it was a
few years after it came out (this was back in 2016) and it has since remained a favourite of
mine. The console reviews are one I always look foward to and this one might be my favorite
of them (I think I might have said that for another one though). This one has so many great
quotes that I use sometimes: "You might as well save that toilet paper, it'll be worth a whole
lot more" "these were a step back in human evolution!" and of course the classic quote that
also became a meme for some reason: "64 bits, 32 bits, 16 bits 8 bits 4 bits 2 bits 1 BIT
HALF BIT QUARTER BIT, THE WRIST GAAAAME!!!". Definitely a modern avgn classic, oh
wait it's 9 years old now, how? One last thing, I once saw a video of someone talking about
bootleg anime dvds and the guy stole lines from this episode.

Episode 114: Alien 3

Average halloween special, I think I also said that before. The best thing about this episode
is the lighting, the dark red and flashing blue actually looks pretty cool in the dark. But other
than that it's a forgettable review on a mediocre game with not very many great jokes,
'Ripley's believe it or go fuck yourself" is probably the best line.

Episode 115: AVGN Games

This episode is half a thanks to the fans for thier projects and half an adevertisement for
avgn adventures. For the record I have not played avgn adventures or it's sequel, I
consudered getting avgn I & II deluxe but I passed, maybe one day when it's on sale. Well
how does the episode itself hold up? it's ok, it's more of a fan tribute than a review and
there's not much funny jokes, the best part is the cameo from Board James. Not bad, but
one of the weaker episodes of this season.
Episode 116-117: Wish List
I like this one a lot, and honestly it's hard to explain why I think I just have a thing for holiday
specials. It's cool to see the nerd tackle a variety of highly requested games and a lot of the
jokes land well. The whole ending twist that the nerd finds a good ljn game really should've
been the end of the ljn saga, but later episodes just reboot it back to the nerd thinking every
ljn game sucks, what. Great christmas special and a solid end to this season.

Season 7 Conclusion
Season 7 was… really good actually. Honestly im suprised how well this one holds up, these
episodes feel like the freshist and funniest ones in quite a while and im honestly suprised
that people think this is the start of the decline. I'd rank this season above 6, 1 and even 2 &
5 but behind 3 & 4.

Season 7 Ranking
1: Tiger Electronic Games
2: Atari Sports
3: Ikari Warriors
4: Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
5: Wish List
6: Schwarzenegger Games
7: Ghosts n' Goblins
8: Toxic Crusaders
9: AVGN Games
10: Alien 3

Season 8 (2014)
All the episodes from 2014. This season was majorly impacted by the release of the avgn
movie but we'll get to that when we get to that. This is also considered a dropping point by
some fans and that's probably again because of the movie.

Episode 118: Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing

Now this is a good start to this season containing so many great moments: the commercial,
the trucks going extremely fast in reverse, you're winner and this quote, "It's my way or the
highway, and the highway aint got shit". So while it's not amongst my highest favorite
episodes, it's still a really good one and hopefully the rest of this season will be lf the same
quality, but that's wishful thinking.

Episode 119: Desert Bus

Here it is, the episode that marks the 10 year anniversary. I don't know how exactly to
describe it but this episode to me feels kind of… "jumped the shark"-ish. I find this episode to
honestly be pretty lame the way the nerd gets so mad at a joke game that wasn't even
released. The only line I laughed at was "did Penn and Teller make this game? or did Andy
Warhol rise from the grave?". Oh and the whole "I quit!" but then for some reason playing an
improved hack of simon's quest brings him back just to have the 2nd lead up to the movie is
pretty dumb but hey at least the movie actually came out afterwards this time.
Episode 120: E.T.
Ohhhh god… This episode is just the end credits sequence from the avgn movie. So before
doing this retrospective I never actually saw the movie. But right before I watched this
episode I thought I should finally sit down, watch the movie and get it over with, that was a
mistake.

Jesus fucking christ were do I begin? So imagine if you took the lame hamfisted plot and
geek jokes from To Boldly Flee, gave it a budget then added the juvenile writing and action
from the Micheal Bay Transformers movies then added the awful, awful cringe comedy and
references from Epic Movie or Disaster Movie, you'd get this piece of shit. I think the comedy
is the worst thing about it, I didn't laugh once, not even ironically, the movie feels like it was
written by a 10 year old.

The characters suck, Cooper is a generic friend character that really wants the nerd to
review e.t. for some reason, Mandy is bland and unfunny and her whole character arc being
bait for the heroes from the villain who eventually turns good but the heroes don't trust her at
first is weirdly similar to Meg from Hercules (the animated one), maybe I was only thinking of
that because I was thinking of good movies I could've been watching instead.

The effects are bad but not in a charming way and don't help mask how boring it is, I
watched this movie sped up and it still dragged on. Oh I forgot to talk about the villains, the
army guy in the tank tracks was annoying and unfunny (I've said unfunny like 4 times now)
and the girl had no personality at all. This movie just lacks all of the charm of the series and
doesn't even feel like anything avgn related.

Also, here's a drinking game: take a shot how many times they explain that the game was so
bad it had to be buried in a landfill, you will probably get so drunk that you might mistake the
movie for being good. The plot is just so lame and feels so much like a channel awesome
anniversary movie where they both try to play it seriously but also have fun with it but It just
doesn't work. And you can cut that moth thing out of the movie and lose literally nothing. I
recently watched the smosh movie and I'm not joking when I say I'd rather rewatch that, and
the fred movie too. The only good thing to come out of this movie is the soundtrack and I
think that's what most people think.

So anyway, let's get to e.t. review because after all that's what actually counts as the episode
(and in the ranking i'll only count the review and not the movie as this episode, confusing I
know, which also means I reviewed the movie for nothing). It sucks, like I get the idea that all
this build up and it turns out the nerd doesn't think e.t. is that bad, and I actually do agree
with that but that doesn't stop this episode from being boring, uninteresting and filled with
lame jokes (the only funny one is "why does e.t. need to be alone while on the phone? is he
some teenage girl?). Really the only thing I like is the ending speech about the game's
legacy. In conclusion, the movie is dreadful and even if you cut it all out and just
watch the e.t. review, it's still unfunny and anticlimactic.
Episode 121: Beetlejuice
This seems to be the first episode where there was a sizable amount of people criticising it
and saying it's gone downhill, since a lot of comments are defending the show and James.
That definitely had to have been because of the movie which a lot of people hated just as
much back then as they do now. The main criticism of this episode seems to be that it
rehashes the idea of giving nicknames to the flaws of the game from the kid kool episode, an
episode you may remember I didn't like very much but to be fair this episode is better than
kid kool but it's still not great. The main thing I like from this one is the comparisons to the
star betelgeuse, that was pretty clever actually. But still it's another average ljn review, which
by the way completely just ignores the wish list episode's ending where the nerd discovers a
good ljn game.

Episode 122: Tagin' Dragon

Here we have the first entry in the 12 Days of Shitsmas. Originally I was going to knock all
12 down in 1 review but instead I'll do short reviews of each part but count them as 1 in the
ranking. Well with that said this is a very harmless, short episode I really don't have much to
say. It's pretty much an appetiser for the next few episodes.

Episode 123: ALF

Honestly this game looks bad enough that it could've been a full nerd episode. Better than
tagin dragon.

Episode 124: Crazybus

This episode is like a quarter of the length of the desert bus one but it ended up being 4
times funnier.

Episode 125: Ren & Stimpy: Fire Dogs

Average but harmless. The box for the game says it's a rental exclusive so how did james
get the box for it? wouldn't the rental stores throw those out?

Episode 126: Rocky & Bullwinkle

Good one, funnier than the last. Did anyone else notice that this game reuses the engine
and hud from wayne's world on nes?

Episode 127: Mary-Kate and Ashley: "Get a Clue"

Another good, short entry. I once saw a shitpost of the "imagine if you picked up your dog…"
joke where it cuts to someone pretending to throw their dog in an oven.

Episode 128: V.I.P. with Pamala Anderson

I have as little to say about this one as there is gameplay in the game, it's fine I guess. I Only
know Pamala Anderson from her appearance on Futurama.

Episode 129: Lethel Weapon

The joke of this one is that you switch characters in game by walking off screen, it's
whatever. The main thing to note here is that it's the first and I think only time Mike appears
in an episode as himself, the movie doesn't count, it never counts.
Episode 130: Porky's
Why is this review of an obscure atari game no one requested James to review ended up
being a million times better and funnier than the 8 years of build up of an e.t. review? Yeah
this is where the 12 days of shitsmas episodes start to get really good, don't have much to
add it's just really funny ok?

Episode 131: Hyperscan

I can't believe there's an avgn episode where the nerd gets earraped by the Ben 10 theme
song. This is another good one and in my opinion long enough to pass as a normal avgn
episode. I might be wrong but this may be the first episode to review games that came out
after the nerd started not counting the avgn games. Only 1 problem, why the fuck did they
have to show the shit-barf concuction from the toxic crusaders episode? the one thing I and
others hated about that one and James decides to show it again, thankfully it's only for like a
second.

Episode 132: Universial Studio's Theme Park Adventures

Another solid one. The main highlight here is the fake commercial at the end. That's all there
is really.

Episode 133: LJN Video Art

A nice finale to this mini series with some solid jokes. So that concludes the 12 Days of
Shitsmas. Honestly, I really enjoyed it for the most part. Isn't it ironic that a 1 hour long
christmas special ended up being a way better avgn movie than the actual avgn movie?
The high point of the season for sure.

Season 8 Conclusion
So, is season 8 good or bad? Well if you condense 12 days of shitsmas into 1 episode then
there's 5 episodes like season 6. Of those 5, I really like 2, there's 2 I'm indifferent to and 1
that just flat out sucks even without being attached to an awful movie. So it's half good and
half bad roughly, so this season goes right in the middle pit of mediocrity. Definitely the worst
season so far I'd at least say that.

Season 8 Ranking
1: 12 Days of Shitsmas
2: Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing
3: Beetlejuice
4: Desert Bus
5: E.T.

Season 9 (2015)
All of the episodes from 2015. There's only 5 episodes here with a runtime of only an hour so
this is the shortest season in terms of total runtime. James put avgn on a backseat this year
to focus on Board James season 3 which explains why all these episodes are pretty basic.

Episode 134: Hong Kong 97

This is a weird one. Like desert bus it's another review of an (I think) unreleased joke game
but it's much better than desert bus. The thing I found odd about this one is that it doesn't
even look like the nerd is playing the game, he's just watching gameplay footage. It's a pretty
good and funny episode but watching it now I feel the ending conspiracy bit was forced and
unnecessary.

Episode 135: Darkwing Duck

I don't know what it is I like about this episode. It's pretty much your standard nerd episode
but on a console the nerd hasn't really covered. The jokes are pretty good too. Not much to
say here, just a basic good episode.

Episode 136: Seaman

This seems to be one of the more popular "modern" (as in 7 years ago) episodes and while I
enjoy some of the jokes and just the weirdness and uniqueness of the games I wouldn't rank
it that high. The main thing I'm not fond of in this episode is the ending conspiracy, not only
because hong kong 97 did the same thing just 2 episodes ago but like that one it's really not
needed in this episode and doesn't really make any sense. Still a good episode though.

Episode 137: The Crow: City of Angels

Yet another halloween episode, but decent enough. The main thing I like about this episode
is the lighting, the moon lightish blue and the glowing orange pumpkin actually looks really
good. But other than that the review and jokes are just ok, weakest season 9 episode but not
bad.

Episode 138: Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero

Basically the same as the last one, although this episode was a little bit funnier so I'd
probably put it above the crow. I much prefer the bad cover art advent calendar James did
this year, it's a really funny watch and a nice bonus to round out the season. This actual
Christmas episode however, is just alright.

Season 9 Conclusion
Season 9 is pretty enjoyable and an improvement over the last season. Something that
makes these otherwise basic group of episodes stand out is the choice of consoles, the nerd
rarely does turbografx-16, dreamcast, saturn & nintendo 64 games so it helps add a twist to
these ones rather than just being the usual nes, snes or genesis games. A short but sweet
season.

Season 9 Ranking
1: Darkwing Duck
2: Seaman
3: Hong Kong 97
4: Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero
5: The Crow: City of Angels

Season 10 (2016)
All of the 2016 episodes, do I even need to say that at this point? And this one is yet another
short season. James was still doing these individually and he'd become a father a few years
earlier so hebhad less time to devote to videos (yeah I know) but was unwilling to let other
people (besides Mike I guess and maybe Bootsy and Kyle sometimes) be involved with the
production of avgn so that's why there were fewer episodes during 2012-early 2017.

Episode 139: Mega Man Games

Here it is, for the longest time this was my favorite episode of avgn. Now is it still my
favorite? I'm not actually sure but it's still in my top 5. This is my favorite story/skit based
episode I can definitely say that.

This episode commemorates the 10th anniversary of the youtube channel/avgn being a
consistently produced series while desert bus was for the 10th anniversary of the pilots.
Another thing it has in common with desert bus is that the nerd temporarily quits in both of
them but here it's handled way better, the only thing that confuses me is of all games to
make the nerd quit, it's Mega Man X5? That game isn't that bad but maybe it was supposed
to be the straw that broke the camel's back I guess.

Another nitpick is that the nerd somehow has the ability to time travel at will and it's never
explained. I think I'm the only person who cares. And also the reviews are admittedly kind of
shallow mainly because James clearly did not play X5 or Legends for more than 10 minutes
but honestly that's fine if he wanted to focus on the skits and that's where this episode really
shines.

So I know that a lot of avgn fans (mostly the older ones) really do not like skits and I
understand why if they mainly cared about the reviews but I feel it's important to have
episodes like this every once in a while to shake things up and hey, avgn is the only review
series to do stuff like this and not make me want to blow my brains out (cough cough, every
single channel awesome reviewer and wannabe). I think the nerd interacting with his older
selves is really funny and was a great way to celebrate 10 years of the show. Though the
Bugs Bunny fight at the end, while the wall breakthrough shot was cool the whole scene is
not really needed and I'm glad this is the last time they did this otherwise it would basically
become the Family Guy chicken fights.

Despite all of those little nitpicks I still love this episode and rank it highly amongst the series.
Finally, this quote from 2004 nerd is very touching but also sadly ironic now:

"You never rush anything out just to meet consumer demand, otherwise you end up putting
out shit. Some franchises get done to death, you can't keep beating the same thing into the
ground."

Episode 140: Paperboy

Meh episode. The window breaking stuff is the only really funny thing in this one but the
game just isn't very interesting. Obviously it makes sense to do a small one after the mega
man episode but i'm still not too much into it.

Episode 141: Beavis and Butt-Head

Like beetlejuice this episode apparently got some shit when it came out (some of the top
comments seem pretty defensive) and really I don't know why. It's far from the best episode
but it's pretty good. I like the drunk nerd rambles over the snes game and the genesis game
seemed frustrating enough to make a good nerd episode, unlike paperboy.

Episode 142: Berenstain Bears

I like to call this one "James misses making Board James". So this one is another big
conspiracy but it's done way better than the other ones like it. The build up is great where the
nerd only makes small remarks about the spelling only for it to spiral even deeper and while
the whole dimensional destiny thing is a bit contrived and hard to follow, I find it to be very
entertaining. Not to mention he fulfils the game reviews with solid jokes, easily the 2nd best
of the season.

Episode 143: Sega Activator Interactor Menacer

This is one of the first majorly controversial nerd episodes, the backlash this one got was a
lot bigger than beetlejuice or beavis and butthead.

So this episode guest stars Keith Apicary, from what I can gather he's some kind of physical
comedy stuntman and like Llyod Kaufman he's pretty hit or miss. Some of his lines are great
(him saying "I'll be right back" while playing the terminator 2 arcade game is great) but other
times he just says things in a weird way and that's the joke.

However the main criticism of this episode is that it's barely a review, it's almost all slapstick
with sega genesis accessories, james defended this in the commentary saying he visually
reviewed the accessories, but he only really did that with the activator and maybe the vr
thing the rest him and keith used normally then started breaking shit with it. But honestly I
enjoy the slapstick, that kind of humour isn't for everyone but I find it funny, so while I enjoy
this episode fine enough for its physical comedy I also understand why so many people don't
like it.

But one thing that irritates me everytime is that keith gets his leg stuck while breaking
through the wall at the end and it just looks awkward, I know they really only had 1 chance to
do it properly but still it's pretty irritating to watch, this is the most spergy complaint I've ever
made. This also is the last episode that involved Kyle and Bootsy, end of an era.

Season 10 Conclusion
Season 10 is difficult to rank, on one hand it has one of my favorite episodes and a really
good halloween special but it also has a pretty mediocre episode and 2 that while I like,
wouldn't rank all too highly. I'd put it slightly below the more consistently good season 9,
which is weird because I put the consistent season 3 below the inconsistent 4 but personally
I just feel the season 9 episodes are more rewatchable and funny for the most part. If I had
to rank the first 10 seasons so far it would go 8<6<1<10<9<2<5<7<3<4.

Season 10 Ranking
1: Mega Man Games
2: Berenstain Bears
3: Beavis and Butt-Head
4: Sega Activator Interactor Aura Menacer
5: Paperboy

Season 11 (2017)
Episodes from 2017, shocking I know. Later in this season Justin, Kieran and Tony of
screenwavemedia (who were involved with the show's merchandise previously) became the
new production staff of avgn, most likely due to the birth of james' second kid which meant
even less time and the departures of Kyle and Bootsy. Because of that, the later half of this
season is considered by many as the start of the decline. I should also mention that this was
the first season where I saw each episode as it came out. I watched some avgn in 2016 but I
didn't subscribe until the start of 2017.

Episode 144: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Like I just said, this was the first new episode that came out when I was regularly watching
avgn so I might be biased when I say that it's one of my favorites. Is it possible to be
nostalgic for 2017? But this one is a really good start to the year and the best episode in a
while besides mega man. The jokes are really funny, the nerd singing in japanese is a
modern classic moment and the anticlimactic ending is so good. It even fulfils multiple solid
game reviews. Again I might be biased but I think this episode is a really good and a great
introduction episode to avgn and I'm not even a big Power Rangers fan.

Episode 145: Sonic the Hedgehog 2006

I remember how hyped I was when this video came out because I was a big sonic sperg.
Watching it now, it's a bit disappointing. First of all, while that animated intro is cool, it just
doesn't compare to the classic theme song. Second, the nerd only got like an hour into the
game and barely scratched the surface of Sonic 06's problems and most importantly the
humour is pretty weak, I know this because the thing I laughed the most at was "robococks".
Most of the jokes here are just the nerd green screening himself into the game, which was
kind of amusing the first time but he just keeps doing it. And one last thing, this is the first
episode to be sponsored, I don't have a problem with this personally (unless the whole video
is a sponsor) especially with the youtube monetization problems that were starting but still it
sort of plants the seeds for the next few years.

Episode 146: Planet of the Apes

The nerd says "you take the red pill" in this episode. Other than that it's pretty meh, some
alright jokes but most of the review is honestly pretty dull and the ending while I get it's
supposed to be a reference to the movie, doesn't make much sense how does the nerd
going to a planet and playing a bad game somehow causes the earth to be overrun by shitty
games? Why do I even care?

Episode 147: Game Boy Accessories

Really great episode, and a worthy successor to the nes accessories episode. I love how
each accessories gets more absurd than the last and as dumb as it is, the "I WANNA BE
SADATED WITH THE GAME BOOOOY" part still makes me laugh, im a fucking idiot ok.

Episode 148: Treasure Master

This is apparently the first episode to have screenwave be involved with production (mainly
in the writing and editing), also with a new cinemassacre logo which is much blander and
simpler than the last, I guess that symbolises a new era one that many would call a dark
age. So how does the first episode of this "dark age" hold up? It's meh. After watching 147
episodes in a row written by James and Mike I can now feel that something is off, the anger
feels very forced and a little more goofy than before (the ending yell just looks dumb) and the
humour is kind of bland. This may be a bad omen for future screenwave episodes.

Episode 149: Wrestling Games

Alright I guess, better than treasure master I will at least say that. There's not much funny
lines and the game reviews are nothing spectacular but it's certainly watchable. This might
take the record for the most average nerd episode so far, which I think I also said that for the
dragon's lair episode from 10 years before.

Episode 150: Polybius

Here we have possibly the most unique episode of the entire series. It's not a review, it's a
video diary of the nerd being driven to insanity over polybius. Honestly despite being so
different I really like it, the horror build up is just right where you notice cracks forming as
early as day 2 and james' acting here is probably his best.

However, we're going to have to talk about the mild controversy of this episode, and that it
has been accused of plagiarism, a claim that has been somewhat exaggerated honestly. So
from what I can gather the information about the Polybius myth was mostly sourced from an
article that james didn't credit, now I don't think James is a plagiarist here because from what
I remember it wasn't word-for-word or anything (unlike that whole monster madness thing) it
was basically doing research but only using 1 source but I do agree that James is a fucking
idiot for not crediting the writer. Now the writer has spoken about this and I think she said
that she didn't mind all that much but would've liked credit, which I agree and I'm not going to
be more offended for someone else. Great episode but James please credit your sources
next time, you numbnut.

Episode 151: RoboCop NES Games

So right when screenwave starts getting involved in the show the nerd is killed off and
replaced with a robotic copy, hmm. Well anyway this is an alright episode, I'm starting to
notice my main problem with these screenwave episodes: they're just not very funny but so
far most of them have been watchable at the very least. The nes viser for the robo nerd is
easily the coolest thing about this one.

Episode 152: Sonic 2006 Part 2

I decided to review both parts seperatly but they're combined in the ranking, im stupid.
Surprisingly I actually like this part more than part 1, the jokes are funnier (especially the
terminator 2 bit) and the review is more detailed with less green screen jokes. Both parts
combined however, well it's an alright episode of avgn but if you're looking for a Sonic 06
review then watch somecallmejohnny's video instead. Also this episode confirms that the
nerd is into bdsm and I don't know how to feel about that.

Episode 153: Charlie’s Angels

Pretty short and meh one, the highlight here is Tony from hack the movies (there I said the
thing) as charlie is actually pretty funny. Other than that a lot of the jokes are weak and the
episode feels quite shallow, probably because it's so short. Stick to jontron's review of this
game. We're 3 quarters in, at this point I'm too far ahead to quit so we're going to have to
push forward.

Episode 154: Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi

Fun fact: James only made this episode because he wanted to point out jhizz in the star
wars encyclopedia. Anyway this might be one of the most forgettable episodes of the whole
series, I genuinely forgot about its existence. Now the actual episode is whatever, like some
of the other ones here it's short so it's pretty harmless but still weak. Oh and I'm sure those
special edition jokes will be just as fresh and original in 2017 as it was in 2004.

Episode 155: Lightspan Adventures

Ah yes, if there's anything I associate with christmas, it's educational games. To be fair this is
one of the better screenwave episodes this year. The exchanges between the nerd and the
santa puppet are pretty funny and the nerd talking in verbose is good too. A decent episode
and end to this season.

Season 11 Conclusion
Season 11 is difficult to rank, cut the 3 really good episodes out and you're left with a
serviceable but forgettable year of episodes but include those 3 episodes and I'd say this is a
C tier season, good but not great.

Season 11 Ranking
1: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
2: Game Boy Accessories
3: Polybius
4: Sonic the Hedgehog 2006
5: Lightspan Adventures
6: Robocop NES Games
7: Wrestling Games
8: Planet of the Apes
9: Treasure Master
10: Charlie's Angels
11: Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi
Season 12 (2018)
2018 episodes. This is the only season to have episodes released on Amazon Prime first
before landing on YouTube, which I believe was in response to youtube's monetization
issues I mentioned earlier.

Episode 156: Earthbound

This episode gives me severe guilt knowing that I played the first 2 hours of earthbound,
really liked it but put it down to play sonic heroes 3 times. But after watching this episode
again, I actually might get back to it as this is a fantastic episode that got me thinking about
the game a lot afterwards. This seems to be the last episode to have no involvement from
screenwave and be James' passion project, because of this many regard it as the last great
avgn episode and their personal series' finale. I think it's a really in-depth and crazy review
with some funny lines mostly from the bizzarty of the game. This might be the most detailed
review James has ever done and his genuine passion and caring shines through. The
magicant scene is one of the best of the entire series representing some kind of burn out
from the nerd/James on what to do with the series after 12 years and a lot of references in
the background. I might be wrong but I agree with everyone that this is the last great
episode, not last good but last great.

Episode 157: Dirty Harry

The theme song cover at the beginning of this episode slaps, and speaking of the theme
song it seems to only be used once or twice a season now, why? Anyway this is an average
one. Best line is "because why make the controls easy to use? I mean if you're going to have
diarrhea you might as well splatter the toilet seat while you're at it", other than that there just
isn't much to it. It's not bad but it's pretty forgettable.

Episode 158: Drake of the 99 Dragons

Decent episode, better than the previous one. This is probably because I feel these modern
episodes are more interesting when they're not nes or snes, of course it makes sense to do
a nes game at least once a year as it's the nerd's flagship console but doing something
different like an xbox game makes it stand out a bit more. Despite that praise the actual
review and jokes are just sort of ok, another average one for the pile.

Episode 159: Tomb Raider Games

Another ok one. The game reviews are a lot more interesting, the set while filled with green
screens is a nice way to tie each review together. The main problem is screenwave's
trademark of just not being very funny, however it is funnier than the last 2.

Episode 160: Resident Evil Survivor

Not a fan of this one really. While the nerd editing himself on the fmv cutscenes of the
original resident evil is amusing, the other jokes are weak and the review was surprisingly
boring. I never try to call an episode boring but with this one I could barely pay attention
despite the game seeming bad enough to make a good nerd review, maybe it's just dull
writing or something but I can't enjoy this one at all.

Episode 161: Super and Virtual Hydlide

Who the fuck was asking james to review more hydlide games? especially because of how
boring this episode is. The only bit that made me laugh is the nerd setting his name as
"ASSSSSS" and it wasn't even that funny. I'm doing this writeup like an hour after watching it
and I already forgot most of the episode so that should show you. One last thing, what did
the fuck did they do to the theme song? they seemed to have added some kind of filter to it
and now it sounds way more obnoxious than before, way to go guys let's fix what wasn't
broken.

Episode 162: Amiga CD32

To quote the nerd in this episode: "Oh please let it be good, oh my god, oh my god! It's
actually good!". Yeah this is a good one, it's a console review which we haven't had in a
while with a variety of short reviews with good jokes. This episode isn't among the best but
after a streak of mediocre episodes it's a miracle to have something good.

Episode 163: The Town with No Name

Congratulations for reading this far as this episode finally broke me, as in I have nothing to
say about it. It's another "nerd gets mad over obvious joke game" one and honestly it's pretty
boring with the only thing to it being the amiga cd32 destruction only because there hasn't
been a console destruction in a long time.

Episode 164: Home Alone Games with Macaulay Culkin

I like this one a lot but really it's only because of the novelty of Macaulay Culkin playing
home alone games. But even despite the novelty, Mack and the nerd have some fun
chemistry and honestly it's the most fun episode of this season, though earthbound is still
better.

Season 12 Conclusion
Season 12 was very mediocre despite a few bright spots, there's just so much dull episodes
and the good ones don't make up for them enough. It's not horrible but it's still pretty weak.

Season 12 Ranking
1: Earthbound
2: Home Alone Games with Macauly Culkin
3: Amiga CD32
4: Tomb Raider Games
5: Drake of the 99 Dragons
6: Dirty Harry
7: The Town with No Name
8: Resident Evil Survival
9: Super and Virtual Hydlide

Season 13 (2019)
All the 2019 episodes. This is the first season to have every episode involve screenwave
and because of that this is where some fans think avgn really hit the shitter. I was going to
talk more about my opinions on screenwave and the people involved with the show but that
isn't really needed here, I'm here to review the final product and not the people behind it.

Episode 165: Chronologically Confused about Kingdom Hearts

After like a decade we finally get another chronologically confused, and it's a game series
James had never played and despite being "interested" in playing the games we all know
deep down he doesn't give 2 fucks about kingdom hearts. So let's get the elephant out of the
room: this episode was made because kingdom hearts 3 was coming out and that was a big
deal which meant potential views up the ass. To be fair I didn't know much about kingdom
hearts so this episode actually did fill me in on the nonsensical timeline. But like, why? this
doesn't feel at all like a nerd episode at all, there's barely any anger, just explaining the facts
with a few exaggerations. It feels more like a didyouknowgaming video. It's not bad honestly
but this really should not be an episode, I guess we should be thankful James didn't count
the sponsored dragon quest chronologically confused as a nerd episode.

Episode 166: Video Game Magazines

I like this one actually. It's basically a sequel to the nintendo power episode and while I prefer
that one, this one still has some funny bits and is very laid back like it's prequel. The nerd
also does the jumpscare again which I think I forgot to mention when I was talking about the
nintendo power episode.

Episode 167: Aladdin Deck Enhancer

A really weird one. Tony (from hacfjajbdkdiud) is pretty annoying as aladdin and the cg
dancing genie is just fucking weird, it's like something out of Chowder but not in any sort of
funny way. I said like 8 times now that I really enjoy the hardware/accessory reviews but this
one is kind of boring and not all that funny. Also there's the random cameos of a bunch of
youtubers, some of them like the gaming historian and rerez I like but most of them I haven't
even heard of. Pretty mediocre, which is a shame because I remember it being much better.

Episode 168: Pepsiman

A lot of people have already said this but the pepsi tv game guy is actually a pretty good
actor and it helps make this an enjoyable episode. Not only that but pepsiman is funny in this
episode and we haven't had a character from the game interact with the nerd in a long time
so it's cool to see it back. I only have one problem with this episode, the lighting in the
terminator 2 style ending looks like shit compared to the same scene parodied in the
terminator 2 avgn episode 10 years before which is simply inexcusable.

Episode 169: Superman 64 Returns!!

Like virtual hydlide, this episode made me wonder who the fuck asked for a sequel to the
superman 64 episode? There really isn't much material to the game that wasn't shown in the
original episode because this one is unfunny and uninteresting. Also why did they bring back
the "where did you learn to fly?" bitch? It's like when The Simpsons or Family Guy brings
back a joke from an old episode thinking it will be as fresh and funny as it was before, but it's
not, it's just lazy and again, unfunny.

Episode 170: Life of Black Tiger with Gilbert Gottfried

This episode of course guest stars the late comedic legend Gilbert Gottfried and is another
one that I remembered fondly but watching now, it's a mixed bag. Like Llyod Kaufman,
Gilbert Gottfried has some funny lines but some duds too, which is a shame because he was
usually really funny but clearly this was a side project for him. But the main thing people
seem to hate about this episode is that the nerd, the guy who supposed to take you back to
the past reviews a PS4 game, personally I don't mind this if it's only done once like here but
if the nerd starts doing more and more modern mobile shovelware garbage like this, it might
be a problem. Overall not a terrible episode but could've been better.

Episode 171: Chex Quest

Weird that a positive review ends up being much better than the other ones this season. I
don't have much to talk about for this episode, it's just a nice, chill look at a surprisingly good
game. And the brutal chex quest bit at the end was really funny.

Episode 172: Jurassic Park: Trespasser

This episode is ungodly boring. The review of the game ends up being an unfunny
snoozefest and no offense to Seamus Blackley but his interview about the game almost
brings me to sleep mainly because I don't give a piss about trespasser's development. Also
the boundary break guy has a cameo for some reason, why are all of these youtubers just
showing up in these episodes now? The only thing that was kind of funny was the final boss
killing itself but other than that it's such a lame forgettable episode, I had a completely blank
lifeless expression while watching it and I never want to see it again.

Episode 173: The Immortal

And this is another one a lot of people hate, and I'm going to have to defend it. Yes it's a
gimmick episode and even though it didn't have to be one take I think the idea of the nerd
exploring a dungeon while reviewing the game is pretty cool and the set is great for once as
it manages to not use greenscreen until the very end. The main thing I like about this one
though is the nerd using old timey english to review the game, I think it's funny and the
writing is some of the best of the modern era. So while it's certainly not for everyone I feel
this one doesn't deserve the hate it gets, I like it at least.

Episode 174: Spawn Games

This episode holds up way more than I remember. Despite my personal opinions on him, I
will say Justin does a great job as clown in this episode and the nerd's spawn outfit and the
comic still scenes look pretty cool. It also has multiple solid game reviews. This is a great
episode which is weird because again it's not one I thought about often.

Episode 175: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

I really like the set up for this episode, the whole end of the world ritual and the fact that it's
less of a christmas special and more of a new years special for a change. However the
actual review, I'm not so sure about. While I commend james for taking a risk and making a
mixed to slightly negative review of a beloved game I don't personally find the review very
entertaining mainly because like I said many times I'm not a big Zelda fan. This episode also
has a lot of detractors claiming that james' criticisms of majora's mask were more of him
sucking and less of the game, now obviously I can't really say anything because I never
played the game but some of the stuff the nerd says in the review makes sense to me, but
maybe there's more to it I don't know. Solid premise, average results.

Season 13 Conclusion
Season 13 was better than season 12 for me personally and nowhere near as bad as I
thought it would be. However, that still doesn't put this season anywhere above "meh" for
me, there's some good episodes but they're not that good and there's a few stinkers but
even those aren't that bad so that puts this one right down the middle.

Season 13 Ranking

Season 14 (2020)
The 2020 episodes. This season's production was impacted by covid so there's a lot of basic
episodes. A lot of people also hate this season but I originally defended it because of the
circumstances around the production but I guess we'll have to see if I maintain my defense.

Episode 176: Raid 2020

To mark the new decade james decided to get a new nerd shirt with shorter sleeves and
black buttons all over and honestly I don't mind, really because I didn't even notice it until
someone pointed it out. But the actual episode is just ok. Back then I was so hyped that the
nerd was actually doing raid 2020 in the year 2020 like he said back in 2008 but now that the
joke has worn off you're left with an average nes review with some decent jokes. The best
part is the ramble at the end of all of the year based games but that's really all there is to it.
Fun injoke, not very memorable review.

Episode 177: Mortal Kombat 1 Ports

This is a unique concept for an episode, to review different ports of the same game and I
think it works pretty well. However it isn't all that funny, the best joke is "how do these ports
stack up" one and only in a bad dad joke way. It's not an amazing episode but it's solid
enough on the review side at least.

Episode 178: Mortal Kombat Rip-Offs

Pretty boring honestly. Even with all of these bad games the nerd seemed to have nothing to
say about it and I've already forgotten the whole thing. Bleh.

Episode 179: Dennis the Menace

The original thumbnail looked like it had a giant cock in it lol. Anyway this is a very average
episode for like the 20th time. I love how the nerd complains how hard the game is while not
releasing that it the difficulty in the settings says hard, now to be fair it really shouldn't have
been set to hard by default and the game probably still sucks even on easy but that was the
unintentionally funniest part about the episode, that and the cock thumbnail unfortunately
makes me only laugh at the episode and not with it.

Episode 180: The Incredible Crash Dummies

Holy shit it's actually good! This is easily the best episode of the season so far, it has the
best jokes, the best review (though I find the look at the toys more entertaining than the
game) and actually has a game destruction that isn't shitty greenscreen. This is far from the
best episode but compared to the mediocrity of some of these recent episodes it's a miracle.

Episode 181: Bad Final Fight Games

Aaaand we're back to mediocrity. This episode, while not horrible, is just uninteresting and
yet again, not very funny. For some reason towards the end Matt McMuscles hijacks and
finishes the review for the nerd because I guess James or whoever at screenwave was too
lazy to do it themselves.

Episode 182: Mission Impossible

Not Tom Cruise is pretty funny actually and the guy they got is a pretty good imitator, that's
all I can say about this one. It's yet another uninteresting forgettable episode, I mean we
don't get much nintendo 64 reviews so that's… something I… think. I'm sure someone out
there is mad that I have nothing to say about this one.

Episode 183: Ecco the Dolphin

What a shit episode. Ok look I've haven't played much of Ecco but holy shit does the nerd
barely make any progress in the game, which wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't for the fact
that the game gets a lot more interesting later on and whoever wrote this episode couldn't be
fucked to look up a longplay to check if there was anything else. While watching this episode
and seeing the nerd rage I was thinking "does ecco really deserve this?", this might be the
most forced the nerd has felt yet, I don't know why he's getting so angsty over this game it
really doesn't look bad. Oh and did I mention the random gimmicky underwater shot that only
exists to check an entry off james' avgn bucket list? And also the ending where the nerd
shits out a dolphin is really unfunny and just disturbing but not in a funny way similar to the
genie in the aladdin episode. The only good thing is the punk cover of the theme song, I
didn't like it at first but it's grown on me. But that's it, the episode itself sucks and is probably
the worst one yet (not counting the movie).

Episode 184: Countdown Vampires

Forgettable halloween special. I know I keep saying this but there's really nothing to it at all. I
kinda like the nerd stabbing the game at the end I think. I'm starting to notice almost every
episode now the nerd rarely leaves the couch, I understand not being able to go anywhere
because of covid but why do we barely see anywhere else in the nerd room now?

Episode 185: The Legend of Kage

They restored the theme song to its original not obnoxiously filtered version, thanks but it's
weird that they'd address that complaint of all complaints. Oh and the nintoaster is back, only
for james to start using the aftermarket hd nes soon after again, ok. Oh wait, the actual
episode? It's not very funny or interesting, there you go, the only thing I can say about it is
that there's some incredibly forced anger but that's becoming the standard at this point.

Episode 186: Taito Legends

I think they were trying to do the action 52 episode again but it just didn't pan out very well.
The main problem here is that it's a 30 minute endurance round of bland reviews of obscure
arcade games, now if the nerd had something funny and/or interesting to say about them
then it would've been great but he doesn't. The whole violence fight bit at the end is the
comedy highlight here but other than that, meh.

Episode 187: The Simpsons: Bartman Meets Radioactive Man

Ohhhh maaaan. Do you remember all the way back in season 2 where I said I was
disappointed by the first Simpsons episode as I felt it was an average review that could've
covered more interesting games? Well this episode is much, much worse. So which
Simpsons game did they choose? Bart's Nightmare? no, The Itchy and Scratchy Game? no,
how about The Simpsons Wrestling or Skateboarding? Those are awful games that would
make good nerd material, but still no. Instead they choose a forgettable game that's basically
a reskin of bart vs the world, why? It's like James went out of his way to choose the least
interesting game possible so he can make a quick low effort episode, and also why is this a
christmas special? maybe they were recording this one and noticed "shit we forgot the
christmas episode, quick get the santa hat and lights and that will be good enough". And yet
again the cg cow ending is another "weird but not in a funny way". The only thing I like is the
animated opening but even that feels rushed as it's not the full thing. But hey they got Brock
Baker, popular voice impressionist to do… the sponsor, what were they thinking? It's like
"gee we got this talented voice actor who can do impressions of many Simpsons characters,
let's make him read our expressvpn ad and nothing else." also the ad is animated, why the
fuck would you waste animation on a sponser that many people skip? Are you dense
screenwave/james? So as you can tell I hate this episode, it's not the worst but it's lazy and
has so many questionable ideas.

Season 14 Conclusion
Wow, this season sucked. I don't remember it being this bad but watching it now, man these
are so unfunny and feel manufactured. I mentioned earlier that James is basically glued to
the couch the whole season. I get covid prevents filming outside the nerd room but James,
you're allowed to leave your couch. And honestly if covid didn't happen I doubt these
episodes would've been any better, the scripting wouldn't be affected so the lame humour
and boring reviews would still be there. I feel a lot of people (including young me) excused
this season for being weaker because of covid but really I think covid came at the right time
for it to be used by james as an excuse and many just bought it. Say what you will about
seasons 11-13, at least there's a lot more effort put into some of those episodes like the
immortal or majora's mask.

Season 15 (2021)
Uh oh… So these are of course the 2021 episodes and yeah let's just get it right of the way:
this is agreed upon by almost everyone as the show's nadir. Now even though im 99% sure
that I'm going to be the same way I actually can't confirm fully yet because this is the first
season with episodes I've never seen before (after darkman) so this will be interesting to go
into these ones blind and see what the fuss is about.

Episode 188: Shrek: Fairy Tale Freakdown

Now this, is probably the most baffling episode of the entire series. So we begin this "game
review" with a long 5 minute tangit where the nerd tries to watch shrek but all of his options
fail and it goes on forever, what other episode has ever done something like this where the
nerd stalls this long about a movie he hasn't seen in a while?

And then the game review finally starts and it's a game boy color game with barely anything
to it, now I can't believe I'm actually saying this but I happen to be a big shrek fan and I must
say there were way better choices of shrek games, like the weird ass xbox game that has
almost nothing to do with shrek, oh wait an xbox game could take a while to beat while a gbc
game could be beaten in like 15 minutes yeah fuck putting effort into the game reviews now.

Then the nerd gets mad and says how he hates shrek and thinks it's overrated, by the way
I've never heard James talk about shrek outside this episode so I don't know if this is actually
true or not but Doug Walker also doesn't shrek but even he loves shrek 2, has James even
seen shrek 2 let alone the first one? Then because of him not liking shrek he gets captured
by a shrek cult lead by Grant Duffin, the guy who hosts shrekfest and shrek retold (where
about 200 people came together to remake shrek, oh and did I mention Justin was a
producer on shrek retold? I wonder if there's any connection hmmm…) and to be fair he's
easily the best thing in this episode (him saying "this is the part where you get sacrificed"
instead of "this is the part where you run away" actually got a laugh out of me) but he wears
a shrek medallion a la Chris Chan's sonichu medallion and I believe it was actually made by
Chris himself (it's not the first time they've collaberated) so yes there's a fucking Chris Chan
reference in an avgn episode, ok.

So anyway the nerd gets burned in a shrek statue which is of course a parody of The Wicker
Man and I shit you not it's worse than the Nicholas Cage version. James' acting in the
burning statue is so bad and maybe the worst of the whole series, it looks like he's holding
back laughter. This episode is yet another "weird but not in a funny way" and is a bizarre
nonsensical mess that fails as a game review and a parody, what else can I say but, there
goes the onion…

Episode 189: Darkman

Here we have a more standard episode, but boring as hell. I'm sorry but I think at this point
the nerd has covered almost all of the bad nes games with interesting things to say about it.
This game is literally just a reskin of robocop 2 which the nerd reviewed not that long ago so
why even bother with this game? to reference the movie? He only does the movie reference
at the end and it looks like shit, there's so much bad editing over actual effects like in the
past, the ball the nerd throws is literally a png flying across the screen how hard is it to
record yourself throwing a fucking ball? Anyway this one also sucks.
Episode 190: Fear and Loathing in Vegas Stakes
This is the first episode that I have never seen before and a divisive one amongst fans, I've
heard people who called it one of the best episodes of the series and some who've said it
was one of the worst. And I happen to be on the positive side, though I wouldn't say it was
one of the best or anything.

As someone who's never seen or read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas this episode ends up
being a massive fever dream of the nerd reviewing casino games as this weird slow talking
guy only for it to go completely off the deep end with the lsd game and the crazy visuals.
While I find this all to be entertaining it unfortunately has some flaws, the green screen shots
look kinda cheap though this was because of covid they couldn't actually film in Vegas which
is why I wish they delayed this one so they could eventually film there. I'm pretty mixed on
Tony as his attorney, sometimes he's fine but other times I swear his dialogue was adr'd.

I also noticed that there's some shots of the car that look like they might've been taken from
the movie, were they too lazy to film more car shots? and speaking of movies there's an
avgn movie reference and please don't do that I never want to think about that movie again.
This episode is an enjoyable change of pace but I 100% understand why many would dislike
it and it's definitely not perfect but so far it blows the other episodes this season out of the
water.

Episode 191: 3DO Interactive Multiplayer

It's… fine. I said 26 billion times that I enjoy the console reviews but this is one of the
weakest ones, it's better than aladdin deck enhancer at the very least. There are multiple
game reviews here that are… just fine. The humour is just… ok. This is the most average
episode of avgn yet, it's not bad but it's not great either.

Episode 192: Corpse Killer

Did anyone while watching the Sega CD episode think "man I wish he really reviewed corpse
killer" well you got your wish and it sucks. It's boring, not funny and that's all I could be arsed
to say about it.

Episode 193: Sega Game Gear VHS Tapes

What a disappointment. The idea of the nerd reacting to weird video game promotional vhs
tapes sounded cool but of course they fucked it up. For most of the episode the nerd has a
severe hatred for the guy in the tape and honestly he really isn't that annoying to me, what I
do find annoying though is the nerd's parody of him at the end. The nerd also sounds so
dead inside in this episode, he should be going "wow this is so crazy!!!" but instead he's like
"wow… this is… a very crazy tape". A lame episode that could've and should've been way
better.
Episode 194: Carmageddon 64
Lame, forgettable… y'know I think I've said those words like 20 times each at this point. The
main thing here is that Mr. Riggs seems to have got some body morph issues or something
he looks like shit, how did they let this happen? probably because James was too lazy to
actually dress up as him and instead only did the head which was edited on a pre-existing
image of his body, I think that's how they did it. Professional curator of film at his finest folks.

Episode 195: Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures

There is literally nothing to this episode. It is the most 5/10 neutral response I've ever had
watching an episode. The thing is I would be madder but the episode is so short that it
doesn't hurt to watch at all.

Episode 196: The Rocketeer

This episode seems to have subtle stabs at the critics of the series with the whole shirt thing,
at least it seems to be in good fun and not genuine dickness, I hope. So with that we have
an episode that is………. actually one of the better ones so far. It's far from great but it's
serviceable enough, remember in the older seasons where episodes like this would be the
worst of that season? The review is solid, actually thats it. The jokes aren't all that funny, you
can see the infamous ceiling-stuck microphone in one shot and holy fuck the leperchaun
was animated like shit. This was the most backhand compliment review I've ever made.

Episode 197: Greendog: The Beached Surfer Dude!

It's boring, forg- you get the idea. This one has a forced gimmick shot where the nerd throws
the game in real lava and nothing else, another entry scratched off james' bucket list. This is
the 7th episode in a row to be of this quality, we've only had one good episode so far, damn.

Episode 198: Commodore 64

What the shit this episode was actually really good. It was funny, had some solid reviews, a
calm nostalgic feel and for once, actually felt like a nerd episode. The only thing I don't like is
the clip show of past commodore 64 reviews, let's hope that doesn't happen again
(HAHAHA). I'd go as far to say this is the best avgn episode in a long time.

Episode 199: Freddy & Jason Commodore 64

Well, it's average I guess. The actual reviews are pretty funny and honestly better than most
of the season. However the return of freddy and jason is incredibly lame, back in 2006 the
original freddy and jason skits in those old episodes were amazing compared to what most
people were doing on youtube back then. So the fact that 15 years later and the "grand
comeback" of these 2 is just a 1 minute scene where figures of freddy and jason walk
towards the nerd into a corner then immediately die by a printer is simply inexcusable, why
bother bringing them back if you're just going to half ass it this bad?
Episode 200: AVGN 200: Every LJN Game
Let's get this over with. So unlike the other episodes before this that I skipped, I did decide to
tune into part 1 of 200 when it came out because hey, it's the 200th episode it has to be
great? to say I was disappointed would be generous. This is the worst episode of the entire
show, it may be more high effort than the other ones of this season but the failure of this
episode manages to be much more spectacular than anything else in the series, not
counting the movie though, that's still worse.

The first thing we should talk about is that for the games in the LJN library that the nerd has
already reviewed he just shows truncated versions of said old reviews rendering this episode
a sort of clip show, yaaay happy 200 episodes fucker here's a bunch of old clips. Of the
roughly 70 minute run time (cutting out sponsors and "last time" bits) I think a good 15
minutes of that is just past clips, that is indefensible. It's even worse when he flashes back to
the wrestling and crash dummies episodes which weren't that long ago.

Now let's get to the reviews, which is probably the biggest problem I have with this episode.
Of the 5 categories, very few of them provide any interesting reviews. The movie games are
mostly game boy and snes versions of games the nerd already reviewed. The sports games
are boring because neither I nor James care about sports but unlike the atari sports episode
they don't find a creative way to make it funny. The marvel games really aren't that bad so
the nerd has to pretend they're way worse than they really are, which is fine sometimes but
here you can tell he's stretching. The wrestling games are pretty much like the movie ones,
mostly game boy versions. And finally, the miscellaneous games which clearly had the most
potential but end up being a mediocre mish mash of short forgettable reviews with some of
the worst jokes in nerd history, I think surfin' nerd takes the cake as the worst joke in the
whole series. Revolution X was the only game of the whole lot which made for a remotely
entertaining review.

How about the storyline? The idea of the nerd trying to make a game himself, only for it to
backfire and realise making good games is more difficult than it looks sounds cool but the
execution is mixed. The parts with the game are fine but the nerds acting is probably the
worst and most forced of the whole series and him green screening himself going down the
rainbow while screaming is facepalm worthy.

Just, how did they fuck this up so bad? how? Well, if there's one good thing I can say about
it is that it's almost poetic for a season like this to end with such a trainwreck of an episode.

Season 15 Conclusion
I need to issue an apology to season 14, after watching this dumpster fire it makes that
season look a whole lot better now. I'm just… so… confused, how did this show get so bad
so fast? Yes there was a decline starting season 11 but it felt gradual, if seasons 11-13 are
like a 6/10 and 14 is like a 4/10 then why is this one like a 2? Of the 13 episodes, I only liked
2, that is pathetic. The jokes are mostly awful; outside of 1 episode I laughed maybe like
twice, the reviews are boring, the acting is forced, the writing sucks and effects are lazy. One
other major problem I've noticed is the recycling of lines from older episodes, I think this is
supposed to be a reference to the original episodes but it comes off as lazy and a sign that
your show has gone on too long. Well we're on the homestretch now so let's just move on
from this shit.

Season 16 (2022)
2022 marks a change in the series. I guess after the backlash of season 15 james decided
to cut down on the number of episodes, downplay screenwave's involvement (though they're
still around apparently) to hopefully make the series better. Now I haven't watched any of this
season yet but the reception among fans is either "avgn is finally back guys" or "it's bad but
not as bad as 15 at least". Also as of time I'm writing this season 16 is not over yet so the it
might completely change after its done who knows.

Episode 201: The Last Ninja

Wow, this is like a big apology letter for the last season and by apology letter I mean a good
episode. We begin with a "lost episode" from 2006 taking place after the ninja turtles episode
warning the now happy modern nerd about the last ninja, the nerd tries to go into the game
again with his new positive mindset but eventually the game drags him back to his old ways
and also there's a classic mike matai fight with ernie because why not. Not only do we get a
great review (keep in mind I thought the nerd was done with interesting nes games), we also
get a storyline way better than 200 and some solid nerd humour. This is a surprisingly good
return and the best episode since I don't know maybe Earthbound? Let's hope they can keep
this momentum going, please just be good damn it.

Episode 202: Contra How I Remember It

Aaaaand they did! This episode is even better than the last ninja. It's a retrospective in the
same vein as the castlevania one and although it's not as good as that one, it's still a fun,
relaxing, nostalgic look at a great series with a really sweet ending speech. I know people
accuse this and the last ninja as being "manipulative" because of their use of nostalgia,
which to me is stupid, the whole tagline of the series is "he's gonna take you back to the
past", nostalgia is one of the main themes of the series.
Episode 203: Purr Pals
My sister had the DS version of this game when we were kids so this is the first episode to
actually take me back to the past, huh. Anyway this is a fucking weird one, and a pretty
hated one apparntly which I find odd. While it's far from the best there really isn't that much
to get mad over. As a cat person I do enjoy the absurdity of the game and the cat scenarios
the nerd makes up for the game. And there's a tribute to Boo, 2 years late, ok. While
definitely weaker than the last 2, this is a decent enough one and ok I just love cats ok
please let me praise this one just please.

Episode 204: Hudsen Hawk

Last one, let's do it. Ok firstly holy shit James' baldness is really getting noticeable now.
Anyway this episode is mediocre unfortunately. It uses a lot of movie clips like the Back to
the Future and Wayne's World episodes but it just isn't funny and the review is pretty boring.
Still would rather watch it over any of season 15 though. But hey we got shit pickle's origin
story… yay?

Season 16 Conclusion
Put conclusion in quotes because this season isn't done yet. So far this has honestly been a
nice refresh from the past few years of mediocrity. The episodes have this new more calm,
nostalgic tone and they feel more substantial, instead of a shit episode every month we're
now getting a decent one every 2 months. The only problem I have is sadly this season just
isn't very funny yet, though it's better than the last 4 in that regard. Now is this season as
good as 2-5 or 7? No but I think if the show continues like this then I wouldn't mind it going
on a few more years, maybe it might actually become great again who knows…

Retrospective Conclusion
Well, we did it, actually wait no I did it you didn't do shit (edit: actually I know this was a joke
but that actually sounded really mean sorry). So how do I conclude this? Well let's answer
the questions I asked at the beginning:

1: Do the classic avgn episodes hold up?

Yes. I was scared going into the old episodes in case they weren't as good as I remember
but I'm happy to report that is not the case. These episodes are still funny, memorable,
creative and provide entertaining angry reviews of old video games.

2: Are the modern episodes (2017-present) that bad?

The answer is yes, and no. Of the 6 modern seasons (starting 11) 2 of them I like fine
enough, 2 I found mediocre, 1 I thought was bad and 1 I absolutely despised. So that puts it
somewhat in the middle but sadly slightly towards the negative side. Now with the exception
of season 15 I still don't think these seasons are THAT bad but I unfortunately I can't call
them great either. Personally my major problem with this era of avgn is that they're just not
all that funny, which usually happens to comedies that run a long time, they run dry of
material.

3: Is avgn good series?

Well of the 16 seasons, I can at least say I like 11 of them. So I guess yes? I've made the
comparison to these shows before but it's like asking if The Simpsons or Family Guy are
good shows which I'd say "We'll they were great at some point" Does your show being good
only at a certain point in time make it good overall? It depends if you just ignore the bad
seasons. So that's a tricky one to answer, I'd say yes but just… cut season 15 please.

Ugh, let's just get this over and done with. Unlike the other rankings this is going to be worst
to best instead of the opposite because I think that works better here. I decided to cut this
into tiers as I think that makes it easier to follow, each episode in the tier groups are basically
equal.

One last thing, there are some inconsistencies with this ranking and the individual season
rankings, oops.
