Guidelines for SPTOPICS-CE Course under Civil Engineering Program

A. Description
A Pre-board Examination is a simulation for the actual board examination. It is a useful
tool as a learning activity to help students gain familiarity with the question formats and
the overall board exam performance. This motivates the students to study and prepare
them well for the national board activities. It can be a valid and effective addition to
board preparation activities.
In preparation for the licensure examination, a review program is integrated into a
course offered in the 2nd Semester for 4th year students, whose designed content is
based on the existing curriculum and the pertinent CMO, such as those whose
requirements are the attainment of course outcomes through participation in
seminars/webinars and field trips.
This will be implemented from SY 2022-2023 up to SY 2024-2025 to address the need
for a licensure exam review program, which was not included in the CHED CMO for
2017 for the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
Aside from enrolled students, the program may invite other alumni reviewees who wish
to take part in the review program.

B. Pre-requisite/s
Enrollment in SPTOPICS-CE requires the approval of the Civil Engineering
Coordinator/Chairperson. Students must have successfully taken and passed all
subjects with direct involvement in the subject SPTOPICS-CE.

C. Grading System and Course Credit

The existing grading system in SEA will still apply to the said course i.e., 40% Major
Exam in the form of Pre-board exams, and 60% Class Standing in the form of short
quizzes and/or speed test, with a passing grade of 60%.
The credit unit of the course will apply even in the inclusion of the review program.
Failure to pass the course will still result in a course deficiency in completing the
bachelor’s degree.
D. Lecturer’s responsibilities
Instruction for board subjects may be delivered by
a) Invited alumni (recommended by faculty members)
b) Review center lecturers
c) a designed combination of (a) and (b)
To eliminate bias, ONLY invited alumni and review center lecturers will be in charge of
the construction of test questions in accordance with the actual contents of the board
examinations.

E. Instructor’s responsibilities
The assigned instructor will serve as the course facilitator. He/she will be responsible for
a) the design of instruction and selection of subjects to be included;
b) scheduling of review and selection of review lecturers;
c) proctoring of quizzes and pre-board exams;
d) checking of quizzes and pre-board exams;
e) finalization of grades;
f) and all other tasks expected from a faculty member handling a regular course.
Interventions for student grades cannot be initiated by the assigned instructors, scores
of students from quizzes and pre-board exams will be recorded as they are.

F. Schedule
For the purpose of covering more topics, the course will be scheduled on a Saturday for
a two (2) 3-hour period with a one (1) - hour lunch break in between, for a total of six (6)
hours for fifteen (15) meetings during the 2nd semester for 4th year students. This will
also give way for both invited alumni reviewers, and reviewees to participate in the said
review session.
G. Compensation for Invited Reviewers
The following rates will apply for invited reviewers:

Affiliation of Rate Transportati Food Total compensation for

Reviewer per on Allowanc a six (6) - hour review

H. Additional Fee for Students

To cover the additional expenses that will be incurred for providing compensation to the
invited reviewers (as seen in section F), an additional fee will be charged to students on
top of their respective tuition fees.
The total amount of additional fee will be divided equally among the enrolled students. A
request to include the said additional fee will be sent to the office of the Vice President
for Finance & Resource Management Services, thru the Vice-President for Academic
Affairs, and noted by the SEA Dean and the chairperson/coordinator of the program.

I.Exam Instructions for Students

 Only 20-22 students will be seated in a room with one faculty
superintendent for an examination: The board has asked schools to seat only
20-22 students in an examination hall to maintain social distance during the
ongoing pandemic.
 Students must bring a personal water bottle and hand sanitizer: All students
must bring personal water bottles that are not covered. In addition, the sanitizer
they bring must be in a transparent bottle to avoid the possibility of copying
during the exam.
 Entrance to the examination hall requires a student ID card: Students must
remember to bring their student ID during the exam day. Anyone who does not
have an ID card will not be allowed to take the exam.
 Students must rigorously adhere to the COVID protocols: The board has
ordered students to closely observe the COVID rules when taking exams to
prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. From the time they enter the examination
hall until they leave, they must wear masks at all times. They’d have to adhere to
social distance conventions as well.
 Keep an eye on the prohibited items: No electronic devices will be permitted
inside the testing centre. If a student is found to be breaking the regulations, he
or she will face severe consequences. So, study all the directions to understand
the prohibited objects and those you must bring into the examination hall.
 Students will be given an extra 20 minutes: This is done so that students can
study the question papers before beginning to write them. The invigilators in the
exam room will have to ensure that this time is exclusively used to read the
question papers.
