I.

Objectives
a. define geometric sequence;
b. identify the common ratio and next term of the sequence;
c. find the nth term of the geometric sequence; and
d. solve problems involving geometric sequence;

II. Subject matter

Topic: Geometric sequence
Reference: K-12 Math Teachers
Materials: Visuals aids
III. Procedure
Teachers’ activity Students’ activity
A. Preliminary activity
1. Prayer
Let us stand and pray! One student will lead the prayer.
2. Greetings
Good morning class? Good morning teacher.
3. Checking of attendance
Anyone, whose absent Nobody is absent teacher;
today? everybody is present today.

4. Review
Let’s have a review on
our previous topic.

Can someone define an Ingkong: An arithmetic sequence

arithmetic sequence. is a list of numbers with a definite
pattern. If you subtract it by the
previous one, and the result bis
always the same or constant.
Correct that’s an
arithmetic sequence. To
see how it works solve
the 14th term of the
sequence 1, 5, 9, 13…,
and discuss the process.
Maryjoy: the 14th term is 53. So to
get that we have the formula
n1=(r*(n-1)). substituting the
given to the equation and we
have 1+(4*(14-1)). and the result
is 53.
Very good, it’s obvious
that you learn the topic.

5. Motivation
Before we proceed, our
lesson I have a song
here and I want you to
be with me to sing it.

Are you ready? Yes Ma’am (students will sing)

(Teacher will play the

math song)

B. Lesson proper

1. Activity
Now let’s proceed, let’s
have a short activity, find
the ratio of the second
number to the first
number.

8
Example 1: 2, 8r = = 4
2

9
2. -3, 9r = = -3
−3

1
1 1
3. 1, r= 2 =
2 2
1

2. Analysis Ma’am it is all about math song.

What have you noticed
in our song class?

Exactly!
I think the topic for today ma’am
What do you think will be is all about geometric sequence.
our topic for today?

Ye’s that’s right, No, ma’am

Geometric sequence, do
you know that class?
So, you listen I will Yes, ma’am!
explain it to you what is
the geometric sequence,
do you understand
class?

3. Abstraction
Lesson
Proper/Presentation
Now class, let us know
altogether what is the
Geometric sequence.

What is Geometric
sequence? A Geometric
sequence progression,
also known as a
geometric sequence, is a
mathematical sequence
of non-zero numbers
where each term after
the first is found by
multiplying the previous
one by a fixed, non-zero
number called the
common ratio.

A sequence is geometric
if there exist a number r ,
called the commo ratio.
The common ratio, r can
be determined by
dividing any term in the
sequence by the term
that precedes it.

Example 1: Identify the

common ratio and the
next term in the
following sequences.

2
1. 1, 2, 4, 8, … r = = 2
1
The next term is 16 since 8(2) =16

20 1
2.80, 20, 5, … r = =
80 4
5 1 5
The next is since 5 ( )=
4 2 4
−8
3.2, -8,32, 128r = =−4
2
The next term is 512 since
-128(4) =512

Example 2: State
Whether each of the
following sequence is
geometric or not.

1. 5, 20 ,80, 320, … √
20 80 320
=4 =4 =4
5 2 80

2. 7√ 2, 5 √ 2,3 √ 2 , √ 2… x
5 √2 5 3
= =¿
7 √2 7 5

3. 5, -10, 20, -40, … √

−10 20
=¿ -2
5 −10

10 10 10 10
4. 3 , 6 , 9 , 15 x
10 10 10
6 1 9 2 5
= = =
10 2 10 3 10
3 6 9
3
5

The nth term of a

geometric sequence is
given by
a n = a 1 r n ¯ ¯ 1, r ≠ 0.

Where a 1 is the first

term and r is the
common ratio.

Example 3. What is the

10th term of the
geometric sequence
8,4,2,1 …?
4 1
r= = a =¿ a 1 r n−1
8 2 n

a n=¿ 8 a 10=¿ 8

() ()
10−1 9
1 1 1
=8 =8( )
2 2 512
8 1
a 10= =
512 64
Example 4. Find the
missing term in 3, 12, 48,
192, 768

12
r= =4 48(4) =192
3
192(4) = 768

Find the missing term in

8, 16, 32, 64, 128, …

64 32 16 Yes ma’am!
r= = 2 = 16 =8
32 2 2

A Geometric sequence
progression, also known as a
4. Generalization geometric sequence, is a
mathematical sequence of non-
Did you understand our zero numbers where each term
topic today? after the first is found by
multiplying the previous one by a
Okay, what is Geometric fixed, non-zero number called the
sequence? common ratio.

(students will answer)

Very good!
Sahlea what have you
learned from our todays
lesson?
5. Application

Okay I have here one

problem where is
geometric sequence can
apply.

During the initial phase

of an outbreak of
measles, the number
infections can grow
geometrically. If there a n=¿ a 1 r n−1
were 4, 8, 16, … on the a 6=4 ( 2 )6−1
first three days of an a 6=¿ 4 ¿
outbreak of measles, a 6=¿ 4 (32)=128
how many will be will There be 128 people infected with
informed on the 6th day measles on the 6th day.

r =84= 2

a n=¿ 4

n=¿ 6
