ELECTRICAL

INSTALLATION AND
MAINTENANCE
Classroom Rules
➢ Keep quiet when I’m standing in front of you.
➢ Only speak when I allow you to speak.
➢ Raise your hand when you have to ask a question or you
have something to say
➢ When my hand is raising, which means you are
interrupting the class. So be quiet.
➢ When I’m in your class, all of you should be in the proper
seat.
➢ Cleanliness of the classroom should be maintained.

Electrical
Tools and
Materials
Objectives:
• Recognize the different types of electrical
tools and equipment
• Discuss the function of electrical tools,
supplies, and materials
• Give the importance of knowing the
electrical tools, supplies, and materials.
Electrical tools
-used to work on an electrical
system.
2 Categories:
a. Test tools - used to test power
b. Repair tools - used to fix faults and the like.

Electrical Materials
-Used in electrical construction project
Electrical tools
01 Screwdrivers -Used to tighten and/or
loosen screws
Types:
Philips screwdriver
This has a cross tip resembling
a positive (+) sign. This is
used to drive screws with
cross-slot heads.
Electrical tools
Types: Standard/Flat screwdriver
• The blade tip is
wedge-shaped
and resembles a
negative
• (-) sign. This is
used to drive
screws with a
single slot head.
Electrical tools
Types: Allen screwdriver/wrench
• This can be in the shape of
a screwdriver or a wrench.
Its function is to drive
screws with hexagonal slot
heads.
Electrical tools
Types: Robertson Screwdriver
• has a square-shaped
socket in the screw head
and a square protrusion on
the tool.
Electrical tools
02 Pliers -used for cutting, twisting, bending,
holding, and gripping wires and cables
Types:
Lineman’s pliers(bull pliers)
This type of plier is good for
gripping, twisting, bending,
and cutting heavy wires and
cables.
Electrical tools
Types: Longnose Plier (Needle-nosed plier)

Used for holding small

objects in tight places.
Electrical tools
Types: Diagonal plier (side-cutter)

Intended for cutting

wires and cables.
Electrical tools
03 Wire Stripper

Used to trip the

electrical insulation from
electric wires.
Electrical tools
04 Wire Stripper
Is a short-bladed knife
used to cut electrical
insulation of wires and
cables.
Electrical tools
05 Drills
• Designed for drilling
• When various accessories
are attached to it, this can
adopt different jobs such
as sanding, sawing,
buffing, polishing, etc.
Electrical tools
06 Electric Saw
a tool with a blade or sharp
points, used for cutting
hard materials, such as
wood or metal
Electrical tools
07 Hacksaw
Is normally used in cutting
metal conduits and armored
cables.
Electrical tools
08 Claw Hammer

Is used for driving nails,

breaking things, etc.
Electrical tools
09 Volt-Ohm Meter (VOM)
• Also called multi-meter or multi-
tester
• Used for troubleshooting
• continuity and short circuit test
• measuring electrical values (AC
and DC voltage, current, and
resistance) Digital Analog
Electrical Materials
01 Electrical wire/ Conductor
Is a material that permits the flow of
electric current
Types:
Stranded Wire-the conductor
consists of many strands of
fine wires twisted together
and are used when flexibility
is needed.
Additional Knowledge
Electrical Materials
02 Circuit Breaker

• An electric current can be

automatically interrupted
utilizing a device.
Electrical Materials
Lamp holder (lamp socket, lamp
03 receptacle, lamp jack)

• a device that serves

to connect a lamp to
a circuit
Electrical Materials
04 Switch

Used to cut off or to

connect the electric
current.
Electrical Materials
05 Fuse
• Is an overprotective
device with a circuit-
opening fusible element
that opens when there
is an overcurrent in the
circuit.
Electrical Materials
06 Conduit/Pipe
• Is an overprotective
device with a circuit-
opening fusible element
that opens when there
is an overcurrent in the
circuit.
Electrical Materials
07 Conduit Clamps

Are intended to hold

electrical conduits in
their position
Electrical Materials
08 Junction box
Used to attach
metallic or non-
metallic conduit to
the junction or
utility boxes.
Electrical Materials
09 Utility Box
is a rectangular box
commonly used for
switches, receptacles,
convenience outlets,
and other similar
devices.
Electrical Materials
10 Connectors and Couplings
Attached is the
metallic/nonmetalli
c conduit to the
junction box, utility
box or with each
other.
Electrical Materials
11 Transformers
• transfers electric energy
from one alternating-
current circuit to one or
more other circuits, either
increasing (stepping up) or
reducing (stepping down)
the voltage.
Electrical Materials
12 Batteries
• These are widely used with
many kinds of electrical
devices in storing electricity
to run off an electrical
device. They are considered
as core electrical
components.
Electrical Materials
13 Convenience Outlet
A device that acts as a convenient
source of electrical energy for
current-consuming appliances. It is
where the male plug of an
appliance is inserted and is usually
fastened on the wall or connected
to an extension cord.
Electrical Materials
14 Male plugs
A device is inserted into a
convenience outlet to conduct
electric current. A flat cord is
attached to it on one end and
the other end is connected to a
current-consuming instrument
or appliance.
Electrical Materials
14 Flat cord
Consist of two or more
conductors placed edge to
edge separated and enclosed
with insulating assembly.
They are usually used for
extension cord assembly.
