Network cable installation
Learning objectives: At the end of this lesson, you must be able to:
1. Define Network Cable;
2.Identify the types of Network Cables and the Do’s and Don’ts of Network
Cable installation

Network cable are commonly used to connect devices like PC’s and
routers together within a local network. Like in businesses of all sizes can
benefit greatly from installing network cables. It can connect all the
equipment in their office so they can easily and rapidly communicate with
one another. As a result, upgrading and growing a network is significantly
easier. The roles and responsibilities inside networks also vary greatly.
duties of the machines on such network, as well as the relationships
connecting those machines.

Types of Network Cable

1. Twisted-Pair Cable - is used in many

ethernet
networks. Comprising of four pairs of thin
wires or
conductors, these ‘wires’ or conductors, are
contained inside of the insulation or outer
sheath of
the cable. There are 2 types of Twisted-pair
cable, the UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair)
Cable, all pairs are wrapped in a single

plastic sheath. and the STP (Shielded Twisted pair) Cable, each pair is wrapped
with an additional metal shield, then all pairs are wrapped in a single outer plastic
sheath.

2. Coaxial Cable - contains a conductor,

Insulator, conductor, insulator, braiding,
and sheath. The sheath covers the braiding,
braiding covers the insulation, and the insulation
covers the conductor.

3. Fiber-Optic Cable - consists of core, cladding, buffer, and
jacket. The core is made from the thin strands of glass or plastic
that can carry data over the long distance.

Common Do’s and Don’ts of Installing Network Cable

Do’s
1. Keep the Cable Dry and Cool - When you get the cable, make sure that
you keep it away from
water.
2. Check the Cable’s Length - Never forget to consider the length of the
cable, regardless of which
network cable you are using.
3. Use the Dust Caps - Your job isn’t just limited to installing the ethernet
cables but also to maintain
it. 4. Plan for the Future - Don’t think the cable you are going with today,
will provide you efficiency
forever. As technology advances with time, after a while, you will have to
replace your existing
ethernet cables with a new one that has better performance.
Don’ts
1. Keep the Cable near other Electrical Cables - It is always suggested
that you shouldn’t keep
different types of electrical cables together.
2. Use the Long Patches - when you set your network cable don’t connect it
to a long patch.
3. Overload the Cable Tray - A cable tray provides a safe path for
transporting the wires without
causing overheating.
4. Bundle Up the Cables - During network cable installation, don’t bundle
the cables tightly.
Choosing Ethernet Wiring
• PROFINET: This industrial Ethernet cable uses foil and braid shielding to
protect signals from the
noise expected on plant floors.

Date developed:
June 10,2023
CBLM’s on Trainers
Methodology Level 1 Developed by:
Lucia T. Jalalon
• CAT6: These cables are backwards compatible with all previous CAT
cables, have larger gauge
wires, can be run in longer lengths, support up to 10 Gbps and 250 MHz
bandwidth, and are
longer-lasting.
• CAT6A: This Ethernet cable wiring doubles the capacity of the CAT6 by
performing up to 500
MHz and can accommodate longer distances — up to 100 meters.
• CAT7A: CAT7A Ethernet wiring supports 10-Gigabit Ethernet, frequencies
up to 1000 MHz, and
is a viable alternative to fiber optic cabling.
Elements of a Successful Cabling Installation
• Using proper design - A proper cabling-system design is simply a plan for
installing the cable
runs and their associated devices. So, what is a proper design? A proper
cabling-system design
will take into account five primary criteria:
➢ Desired standards and performance characteristics
➢ Flexibility
➢ Longevity
➢ Ease of administration
➢ Economy• Using quality materials - The quality of the materials used in
a cabling installation will directly
affect the transmission efficiency of a network. Quality materials are sturdy
and well-constructed.
Low-quality materials will not be durable and may actually break while you
are handling them.
• Practicing good workmanship - There is a saying that any job worth
doing is worth doing
correctly. When installing cabling, this saying is especially true because
shoddy workmanship
can cause data-transmission problems and thus lower the network’s
effective throughput. If you
rush any part of the connector installation, the effective optical transmission
capacity of that
connection will probably be reduced.

Copper cable splicing and cable testing

Learning objectives: At the end of this lesson, you must be able to:
1. define twisted -pair cable;
2. discuss the procedures on how to make an ethernet cable
3. identify the color coding for straight -through and crossover cable;

The primary purpose of splicing is to allow spliced wires to carry the
current. By performing splicing, you have the opportunity to connect
damaged cables instead of installing new ones. Splicing cables can be a
cheaper alternative to investing in new ones. Ethernet cables can either be
crossed over or wired straight through. The most popular kind, straight
through, is used to link PCs to hubs or switches. They are most likely what
you will discover when you purchase a patch cable from your neighborhood
computer shop. Since crossover Ethernet cable isn't as frequently used as
straight

How to Make an Ethernet Cable

1. Ethernet Cable - Category 5e or

CAT5e (You may also use Category 6
or CAT6 cabling which has higher
performance specifications and is
about 20% more expensive than
CAT5e.)

4. RJ-45 Crimping tool-is the

tool used to deform the material
and create the connection.
Crimping is commonly used in
electrical work, to attach wires
together or wire to other
connectors.

4. STRAIGHT THROUGH
Ethernet cables -are the
standard cable used for almost
all
purposes, and are often called
"patch cables". It is highly
recommended you duplicate the
color order as shown on the left.
Note how the green pair is not
side-by-side as are all the other
pairs. This configuration allows
for longer wire runs.

5. CROSSOVER CABLES - The
purpose of a Crossover Ethernet
cable is to directly connect one
computer to another computer (or
device) without going through a
router, switch or hub.

Procedure on how to make an Ethernet

cable

 Cut into the plastic sheath about 1

inch (2.5 cm) from the end of the cut
cable. The crimping tool has a razor
blade that will do the trick with
practice.

 Unwind and pair the similar colors.

 Pinch the wires between your
fingers and straighten them out as
shown. The color order is important
to get correct.

 Use scissors to make a straight cut

across the 8 wires to shorten them
to 1/2 Inch (1.3 cm) from the cut
sleeve to the end of the wires.

 Carefully push all 8 unstripped colored

wires into the connector. Note the
position of the blue plastic sleeve. Also
note how the wires go all the way to the
end

 A view from the top. All the wires are all

the way in. There are no short wires.

 WRONG WAY - Note how the blue plastic
sleeve is not inside the connector where it
can be locked into place. The wires are too
long. The wires should extend only 1/2 inch
from the blue cut sleeve.

 WRONG WAY - Note how the wires do not

go all the way to the end of the connector.

 CRIMPING THE CABLE -carefully

place the connector into the
Ethernet Crimper and cinch down
on the handles tightly. The copper
splicing tabs on the connector will
pierce into each of the eight
wires. There is also a locking tab
that holds the blue plastic sleeve
in place for a tight
compression fit. When you remove
the cable from the crimper, that
end is ready to use.

 For a standard "Straight Through"
cable, repeat
all steps and wire color order on the
other end of cable.
For a cross-over cable, the other end
will have a
different color order as shown by the
crossover picture
above.

 Make sure to test the cables before

installing them.
