Welcome to the unit of competency, “Set-up Computer Networks”, is
one of the competencies of COMPUTER SYSTEM SERVICING NC II, a
course which comprises the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a
Network Technician possess.
The module, “Setting-up Computer Networks”, contains training
materials and activities related to Electronics.
In this module you are required to go through a series of learning
activities in order to complete each learning outcome. In each learning
outcome are Information Sheets, Self-Checks, Operation Sheets and
Task/Job Sheets. Follow and perform the activities on your own. If you have
questions, do not hesitate to ask for assistance from your facilitator.
Remember to:
1. Work through all the information and complete the activities in
each section.
2. Read information sheets and complete self-check. Suggested
references and included to supplement the materials provided in
this module.
3. Most probably, your trainer will also be your supervisor or
manager. He is there to support you and show you the correct way
to do things.
4. You will be given plenty of opportunities to ask questions and
practice on the job. Make sure you practice your new skills during
regular shifts. This way, you will improve your speed, memory and
confidence.
5. Use the self-checks, operation sheets or task or job sheets at the
end of each section to test your own progress. Use the performance
criteria check list or procedural checklist located after the sheet to
check your own performance.

Network cable are commonly used to connect devices like PC’s and
routers together within a local network. Like in businesses of all sizes can
benefit greatly from installing network cables. It can connect all the
equipment in their office so they can easily and rapidly communicate with
one another. As a result, upgrading and growing a network is significantly
easier. The roles and responsibilities inside networks also vary greatly.
duties of the machines on such network, as well as the relationships
connecting those machines.

3. Fiber-Optic Cable - consists of core, cladding, buffer, and

that can carry data over the long distance.

• CAT6: These cables are backwards compatible with all previous CAT
cables, have larger gauge
wires, can be run in longer lengths, support up to 10 Gbps and 250 MHz
bandwidth, and are
longer-lasting.
• CAT6A: This Ethernet cable wiring doubles the capacity of the CAT6 by
performing up to 500
MHz and can accommodate longer distances — up to 100 meters.
• CAT7A: CAT7A Ethernet wiring supports 10-Gigabit Ethernet, frequencies
up to 1000 MHz, and
is a viable alternative to fiber optic cabling.
Elements of a Successful Cabling Installation
• Using proper design - A proper cabling-system design is simply a plan for
installing the cable
runs and their associated devices. So, what is a proper design? A proper
cabling-system design
will take into account five primary criteria:
➢ Desired standards and performance characteristics
➢ Flexibility
➢ Longevity
➢ Ease of administration
➢ Economy• Using quality materials - The quality of the materials used in
a cabling installation will directly
affect the transmission efficiency of a network. Quality materials are sturdy
and well-constructed.
Low-quality materials will not be durable and may actually break while you
are handling them.
• Practicing good workmanship - There is a saying that any job worth
doing is worth doing
correctly. When installing cabling, this saying is especially true because
shoddy workmanship
can cause data-transmission problems and thus lower the network’s
effective throughput. If you
rush any part of the connector installation, the effective optical transmission
capacity of that
connection will probably be reduced.

The primary purpose of splicing is to allow spliced wires to carry the
current. By performing splicing, you have the opportunity to connect
damaged cables instead of installing new ones. Splicing cables can be a
cheaper alternative to investing in new ones. Ethernet cables can either be
crossed over or wired straight through. The most popular kind, straight
through, is used to link PCs to hubs or switches. They are most likely what
you will discover when you purchase a patch cable from your neighborhood
computer shop. Since crossover Ethernet cable isn't as frequently used as
straight

recommended you duplicate the

Note the position of the blue plastic sleeve. Also, note how the wires go all
the wires go all the way to the end. The wires are all the way in and there
are no short wires.
STEP 2: Place the connector into the ethernet crimper and cinch down on
the handles tightly.
STEP 3:The copper splicing tabs on the connector will pierce into each of
the eight wires.
STEP 4:There is also a locking tab that holds the blue plastic sleeve in
place for tight compression fit. And when you remove the cable from the
