Chee220 Tutorial 5 2024

The document contains three questions regarding fluidization calculations for spherical catalyst pellets and particles. It includes calculations for minimum fluidization velocity, minimum bed height, pressure drop at minimum fluidization conditions, and fluidization velocity required to expand the bed height. Physical properties of the particles and fluids are provided.

QUESTION 1

Spherical catalyst pellets 4mm in diameter are to be fluidized with nitrogen at 101.3kPa at 600C. The
density of the catalyst particles is 960 kg/m3. The molecular weight of nitrogen is 29kg/kmol. If it is

assumed that the point of incipient fluidization is reached at e mf  0.430 , calculate the minimum

fluidization velocity in the vessel. Nitrogen is considered here to be an ideal gas with  nitrogen  0.0000207
Ns/m2. R =8.314 m3∙Pa/(mol.K), g =9.81m/s2

QUESTION 2

Particles of density 1200kg/m3 are fluidized with air at 250C and 203KPa (abs). The shape factor  s is
0.90. The void fraction at emf minimum fluidizing conditions is 0.43. The bed diameter is 0.60m and it

contains 350kg of solids. The bulk density of the solids,  b is 1150kg/m3 and the viscosity of air is

1.845x10-5Pa.s (   1.845x10 Ns / m ). Air is considered here to be an ideal gas. R= 8.314

is 900kg/m3 and the height of the packed bed is 1.11m. The voidage at minimum fluidizing velocity is
0.042. The bed is charged with 300kg of solid material and the diameter of the empty bed is 0.62m. R=
