Key Concepts/ In giving the place value of a digit in a number up to 10 000:


Understandings to  Identify the place value in which the digit belongs such as ones, tens and thousands.
be Developed:  The value of a number could be arrived at by multiplying the digit by its place value.
 The place value of a digit is always 10 times as great as the place value of the digit to its
right.
1. Objectives:
Knowledge Identify the place value and value of each digit in 4 - to 5- digit numbers.
Skills Write the place value and value of each digit in 4 - to 5- digit numbers.
Attitudes Follow simple rules correctly.
Values Practice helpfulness at all times.

Preparation 1. Conduct a short drill on reading 3-4 digit numbers using flash cards .Let them identify the
5 minutes numbers in hundreds place.
2. Give activity I-B on p.11 of LM as a review.
Write the letter of the correct answer of the following number discs:

a. 412 c. 241
b. 421 d. 214

3. Form 3 groups with five members.


Give each group four number cards.

a. Form the highest number using all the digits.


b. Form the smallest number.
The first group to form the number correctly wins.
4. Ask: How did you find the activity?
Presentation 1. Present the place value chart.

Let them note that value of a number could be arrived by multiplying the digit by its place value
as shown in the procedure below.

2 x 1 = 2
4 x 10 = 40
7 x 100 = 700
8 x 1000 = 8000
Let pupils see the value of each digit by having them write the number in expanded form.

2. Performing the Activity (form pupils into groups)


Distribute the number cards bearing numbers not greater than ten thousand.

provided to them.
