MATH QUIZ BEE REVIEWER

Addition -It is putting numbers together

-is the process of putting numbers together

Addends – are the numbers to be added

The sum or total – is the answer in addition

Plus sign (+) – it is the symbol used in addition

Example: 256
addends
+ 143

399 sum or total

Commutative Property - states that switching the numbers that are being added will result to the same sum.

-When you change the order of the addends, you get the same sum.

Example: 188 + 5 + 16 = 5 + 16 + 188

193 + 16 = 21 + 188

209 = 209

Identity Property -states that adding zero to a number results the same number.

-Any number added to zero is the number itself.

Example: 209 + 0 = 209

Associative Property -states that grouping the addends does not affect the sum. Addends are grouped with
parentheses which are added first.

-when you change the grouping of the addends, you get the same sum.

Example: (188 + 5) + 16 = 188 + (5 + 16)

193 + 16 = 188 +21

209 = 209

Subtraction - is the process of removing or taking away a number from another number

-is the opposite operation of addition

- is taking away some objects from a set.

-it is also used to compare two sets

Minuend -

- is the number from which we subtract another number

Subtrahend - is the number being subtracted or taken away from the minuend

Difference - is the answer in subtraction. It is also called the number that is left after a number has
been subtracted.

Minus sign (-) - is the symbol that represents subtraction

Example: 256 minuend

- 143 subtrahend

113 difference

Multiplication - is also called repeated addition

-is a shortcut for repeated addition

Factors -are the multiplicand and the multiplier

-are numbers which, when multiplied, give a product

Array -is an arrangement of objects in rows and columns. We can use arrays to help us
understand multiplication better

Multiplicand -is the number being multiplied

Multiplier -is the number by which a multiplicand is to be multiplied.

Product -is the answer in multiplication

Factors

9 X 5 = 45 product

multiplicand multiplier

Division -is the inverse of multiplication. It may also be called repeated subtraction.

Dividend -the number to be divided

Divisor -is the number by which we divide

-the number that divides the dividend and represents the number of groups

Quotient -is the answer in division

12 ÷ 3 = 4 quotient

dividend divisor
