Circumference Gold Answers

The document contains problems about calculating circumference, perimeter, radius, and maximum number of bulbs that can fit in a circular flower bed. It provides the formulas and steps to solve for circumference, perimeter, and radius given various circle measurements. It also works through proving a student's claim about the number of bulbs that will fit is incorrect and calculating the actual maximum.

Circles Circumference Answers

1. Calculate the length of the diameter or radius of each circle, rounding your answers to two significant figures.

a) circumference = 29.4cm r = 29.4

2π = 4.7cm
r

155
b) circumference = 155cm d = π = 49cm
d

265.4
c) circumference = 265.4cm d = π = 84cm
d

15.6
d) circumference = 15.6mm r = 2π = 2.5mm
r

99.9
e) circumference = 99.9m d= π = 32m
d

2. Calculate the perimeter of each shape, rounding your answers to one decimal place.
π × 8.5 × 2
a)
2 + 8.5 + 8.5 = 43.7cm

8.5cm

b) π × 5.5 × 2
+ 5.5 + 5.5 = 19.6cm
4

5.5cm

c) 3/4 × (π × 0.5 × 2) + 0.5 + 0.5 = 3.4cm

3. A trundle wheel is a device used to measure distance. Each revolution of the wheel measures a
distance of 1m. Calculate the radius, in centimetres, of the wheel, rounding your answer to one
decimal place.

1m = 100cm

radius = 100
2π = 15.9cm

4. A flower bed has a circular stone border. Joanna wants to plant a daffodil bulb every 200mm along
the inside edge of the border. She says she can plant 15 bulbs. Prove that she is incorrect and state
the maximum number of bulbs that she can plant.

border
Diameter of soil = (50 − 10) × 2 = 80cm
soil
Circumference of soil = 80 × π = 251.327...cm

200mm = 20cm

Number of spaces for bulbs = 251.327 = 12.57...

10cm

20

So she only has enough room for a maximum of 12 bulbs.
