Description
Section 2
Description
1. Intended Use Model ES 90 pattern control units may only be used to control 24 VDC-
solenoid valves.
Any other use is considered as not intended and is carried out at the
operator’s own risk. Nordson will not be responsible for any damages
resulting from unintended use.
NOTE: Hot melt material, cold glue and other melting materials are
referred to as adhesives in this manual.
Unintended Use – Example – The unit may not be operated in an explosive atmosphere.
2. Residual Risks WARNING: Do not touch the contacts after pulling the mains
plug. Some of the unit’s electronic components contain resi-dual
voltage in the form of a capacitive charge which can produce a
light electrical shock when touched. The capacitive charge dis-
appears after approx. 60 seconds.
The accessory remote control has the same control panel as the unit
itself.
S Indicators for starting signal can be connected either for each channel
unit individually or together for all channel units through the central
unit
S RS-232 interface
4. Front-/Rear Side
5. Power Supply Assembly Serves as the voltage supply for the internal electronic components and
the external solenoid valve. The mains fuses and connection are located
on the rear side.

Security
Connection of an external, potential-free release - contact for inclusion in
a security chain. If this contact is not available, the input SECURITY can
be bridged.
NOTE: The pattern control unit cannot be operated when the input
SECURITY is open.

9. Application Pattern An application pattern (Fig. 2-7) consists of applied (5 and 8) and
unapplied patterns or surfaces (6 and 7).
The distance between the indicator (3) and application head (4 and 9) is
referred to as pattern offset (Fig. 2-7).
The time between switching on the solenoid valve and the beginning of
adhesive application is referred to as pull-in delay (ton). The time between
switching off the solenoid valve and the end of adhesive application is
referred to as drop-off delay (toff). Both delays are called valve time in the
program.

Installation
1. Transport Transport the unit so as to avoid damage. Do not throw the unit. Use
suitable packing materials such as styrofoam and sturdy cartons. See
Section Specifications for weight.
2. Unpacking Carefully unpack the unit to avoid damaging it. Check for damage caused
during transport. Do not lose the key included with the unit.
3. Setting up Protect the unit from humidity, excessive dust (observe IP-Class) and
vibrations.
4. Removing Switch off the mains switch, then disconnect all electrical connections
from the unit.
5. Storage Pack the unit in suitable packing materials such as styrofoam and sturdy
cartons. Protect from humidity, dust and great fluctuations in temperature
(condensation).
7. Setting Internal Switches All internal switches and potentiometers are factory-set. Only switches

Connection to Line Voltage WARNING: The unit may only be operated with the line voltage
indicated on the ID plate (For operating voltage see Section
Specifications).
1. Make sure that the line voltage available at the factory corresponds to
the operating voltage of the unit.
2. Connect the power cable to the socket (Fig. 3-5) on the rear panel of
the power supply assembly.
NOTE: Power supply for Master- and Slave -units should be switched on
and off at the same time!
Fig. 3-5
Connection of Accessories Connect all accessories except the remote control (see Section Parts) on
the rear panel of the central unit (see Fig. 3-6).

Fig. 3-7
9. Selecting Encoder Two different encoders are available (see Section Parts). For calculation
and selection refer to the operating manual Encoder.
10. Factory Settings The following settings were programmed at the factory.
11. Initial Startup After the unit and its accessories have been installed, initial startup can
take place.

during production are ignored.
ESC B Y ENT S Operating mode 3 (product-following): If the application head is, for
production reasons, located up to 4 product lengths from the starting
signal, the start impulses read are first stored, but the pattern is not
immediately produced. Only when the product has reached the
application head the pattern is produced. No repetition factor.

4. Error Codes The memory is checked after switching on and at regular intervals during
opeartion. If a memory fault is detected, the adjacent display (Fig. 6-4)
appears and an error code is displayed.
Fig. 6-4
How to React to Error Codes The display shows error code 924.
- Example -
1. Search for error code 924 in the following table Parameter List.
The table provides the information that the error is in the Glue
Parameter section.
3. Program Channel 32 with a new value for the delay time P6.
NOTE: If there are more error codes noted, repeat the previous steps.
