INTRODUCTION TO QUADRATIC EQUATIONS

 A Quadratic equation is an equation of the form 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0 where
𝑎, 𝑏 and 𝑐 are numbers and 𝑎 ≠ 0.
 To solve such kinds of equations, we use the completing square method,
the quadratic formula method or the factorization method is the equation
has real roots or repeated roots.

The Quadratic Formula Method

 This method is very easy and so interesting to solve any

kind of quadratic equation of the form 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0
provided the Discriminant of the equation is not less than
one.
 We can use the completing square method to derive the
quadratic formula from the standard form 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0 as
follows;

Step 1:
Push the constant term 𝑐 to the right side of the equation.
𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0
𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 = −𝑐

Step 2:

Make the coefficient of 𝑥 2 to be equal to one by dividing

throughout of the equation by 𝑎.
𝑎𝑥 2 𝑏𝑥 −𝑐
+ =
𝑎 𝑎 𝑎

𝑏 −𝑐
𝑥2 + 𝑎 𝑥 = 𝑎

Step 3:
Multiply the coefficient of 𝑥 by half, square the result and
𝑏 1 2 𝑏 2
add to both sides of the equation, e.g. (𝑎 × ) = (2𝑎)
2
𝑏 𝑏 2 −𝑐 𝑏 2
𝑥2 + 𝑥 + (2𝑎) = + (2𝑎)
𝑎 𝑎
Step 4:
Complete the square to the left hand side of the equation
and evaluate as we as simplifying the right hand side of
the equation.
𝑏 2 −𝑐 𝑏2
(𝑥 + 2𝑎) = + 4𝑎2
𝑎

𝑏 2 𝑏2 𝑐
(𝑥 + 2𝑎) = −𝑎
4𝑎2

𝑏 2 𝑏 2 −4𝑎𝑐
(𝑥 + 2𝑎) = 4𝑎2

Step 5:
Introduce square roots to both sides of the equation in
order to make 𝑥 subject of the formula.

𝑏 2 𝑏 2 −4𝑎𝑐
√(𝑥 + ) =√
2𝑎 4𝑎2

𝑏 √𝑏 2 −4𝑎𝑐
𝑥 + 2𝑎 = ± 2𝑎

𝑏 √𝑏 2 −4𝑎𝑐
