Benchmarking:

 Definition: The practice of comparing processes, performance metrics, or products


to industry bests or best practices from other industries.

 Example: A car manufacturing company comparing its production line efficiency with
a leading competitor or even with a non-competitor renowned for its efficient
production techniques.

2. Continual Improvement:

 Definition: The recurring activity to enhance performance.

 Example: A company reviewing its customer feedback monthly to identify areas for
improvement in product quality or service delivery and implementing necessary
changes.

3. Design and Development:

 Definition: A structured approach to creating products, processes, or services, which


involves stages from initial concept to finalization.

 Example: A software firm following stages like requirements analysis, prototyping,


coding, testing, and validation before releasing a new application.

4. Effectiveness:

 Definition: The extent to which planned activities are realized and planned results
achieved.

 Example: If a company initiated a training program to reduce product defects and,


after its execution, defects reduce significantly, the program can be deemed
effective.

5. Interested Party:

 Definition: A person or group having an interest in the performance or success of an


organization.

 Example: Shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, regulators, and local


communities surrounding a factory.

6. KPI (Key Performance Indicator):

 Definition: A measurable value that demonstrates how effectively an organization is


achieving key objectives.

 Example: In a call center, a KPI might be the "average call handling time" or
"customer satisfaction score post-call."

7. Management:

 Definition: The coordinated activities to direct and control an organization.

 Example: Top-level executives in a company deciding strategic directions, allocating


resources, and monitoring organizational performance.
8. Nonconformity:

 Definition: The non-fulfillment of a requirement.

 Example: If a product specification requires a metal part to be 5mm thick, and the
manufactured part is 4.8mm thick, it's a nonconformity.

9. Organisation's Environment:

 Definition: External and internal factors and conditions that can affect the
organization's approach to its products, services, and investments.

 Example: For a fishery, external environmental factors might include ocean


temperatures and fishing regulations, while internal factors might involve fishing
equipment quality or worker skills.

10. Process Approach:

 Definition: Managing activities as process inputs, outputs, and interactions.

 Example: In order processing, viewing customer orders as the input, the shipping of products
as the output, and considering interactions like inventory checks and packaging.

11. Quality:

 Definition: The degree to which a set of inherent characteristics fulfills requirements.

 Example: A smartphone that has long battery life, high-resolution camera, efficient
processing speed, and durable construction meets high-quality standards.

12. Record:

 Definition: A document stating results achieved or providing evidence of activities


performed.

 Example: After a safety inspection, an inspection report is created detailing the areas
checked and any findings. This report serves as a record.

Each of these terms is vital in understanding and implementing the ISO 9001 quality management
system effectively. They help set clear expectations, measure performance, and drive improvements.
