MH2810 Tutorial 4 (Week 5)

Reference: Unit 2-6, 2-7. 2-8, 2-9

1. A cylindrical tank with radius 5 m is being filled with water at a rate of

3 m3 per min. How fast is the height of the water increasing?

2. If two resistors with resistances R1 and R2 are connected in parallel,

then the total resistance R, measured in ohms Ω, is given by
1 1 1
= + .
R R1 R2
If R1 and R2 are increasing at rates of 0.3 Ω/s and 0.2 Ω/s respectively, then
how fast is R changing when R1 = 80Ω and R2 = 100Ω?
Hint: Differentiate both sides of the equation with respect to t (using Chain
Rule).

3. A plane flying horizontally at an altitude of 2 km and a speed of 800

km/hr passes directly over a radar station. Find the rate at which the dis-
tance from the plane to the station is increasing when it is 3 km away from
the station.

Note: The distance D from the plane to the station is related to the horizontal
distance h (by Pythogorean Theorem):
D2 = 22 + h2
where h is the horizontal distance.

4. A box with a square base and open top must have a volume of 32, 000
cm3 . Let b cm be the side length of the base square, and h cm be the height
of the box.

(a) Express the total area A of the box in terms of b and h.

(b) Using our knowledge of the volume the box, express the total area A
in terms of b only.
(c) Find the dimensions (b and h) of the box that minimize the total area
A if
(i) 10 ≤ b ≤ 100
(ii) 10 ≤ b ≤ 30

The amount material used can be measured in terms of total area of the box
(the larger the area, the more amount is used)

5. Using L’Hospital’s Rule (more than once if necessary), find the following
limits.
5x4 − 4x2 − 1 3x − 2x
(a) lim (b) lim (c) lim xex
x→1 10 − x − 9x3 x→0 x2 − x x→−∞
x2 tan x − x sin x
e ln (cos x)
(d) lim (e) lim (f) lim
x→∞ (ln x)3 x→0 x − sin x x→0 x2

6. (Basic rules for integration) Evaluate the following integrals.

(i) 4 cos x − 5 sec2 x dx
