Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability

The IBM Personal System/2 SpeechViewer Hardware Option and IBM

Personal System/2 SpeechViewer Convenience Kit are tools for speech
pathologists, teachers in Special Education programs, and others
involved in the treatment of speech disorders.
The SpeechViewer Hardware Option (6450611) is a feature card
that is installed in a feature slot of a Personal System/2 Model 25
or 30. A microphone and speaker, which attach to the feature card,
are included. Operation of the Hardware Option requires installation
of the SpeechViewer Application Software announced today in IBM
Programming Announcement 288-614.
The SpeechViewer Convenience Kit (6450610) combines the
Hardware Option with the Application Software for ordering
convenience.
The combination of the SpeechViewer Hardware Option and
SpeechViewer Application Software creates a system that accepts
speech input, digitizes, stores, and analyzes the speech. Its
development is based on ten years of research at IBM with input from
teachers and clinicians who used prototypes of the product.
Results from this research have shown that SpeechViewer
programs are highly motivating, provide critical visual and auditory
feedback to pathologists and clients, and can be integrated into
established and accepted clinical practices.
SpeechViewer is available only from Direct Response Operations
by calling 1-800-IBM-2468. For additional product information or
technical support call the IBM National Support Center for Persons
with Disabilities at 1-800-IBM-2133 (Continental USA - Voice/TDD) or

DESCRIPTION
IBM Personal System/2 SpeechViewer is a tool for speech
pathologists, teachers in Special Education programs, and others
involved in the treatment of speech disorders. SpeechViewer is a
member of the IBM Independence Series (TM) of products designed for
people with special needs.
The SpeechViewer Hardware Option consists of an adapter card,
hardware installation instructions, an OEM microphone, and an OEM
speaker. Operation of the Hardware Option requires installation of
the SpeechViewer Application Software. The SpeechViewer Convenience
Kit combines the Hardware Option and Application Software, providing
a single part number for ordering convenience.
SpeechViewer is designed to execute on IBM Personal System/2
Model 25 or 30 System Units (8525 or 8530) and requires IBM DOS 4.00.
It is intended to run as a stand alone application and requires the
use of all system resources when active.
The SpeechViewer software consists of a number of modules
accessible from a main menu. These modules support a full range of
clinical activities, ages, and communication disorders. Flexibility
has been designed into SpeechViewer, allowing a professional to
tailor programs to individual clients and to augment existing
therapy. The modules have been divided into three categories :
o Awareness modules -- use simple displays and employ a 'cause and
effect' methodology to focus a client's appreciation of and
control over a discrete speech parameter
o Skill Building modules -- use more game-like displays and employ
a 'task directed' methodology to help develop control over speech
parameters such as pitch, breathing, and vowel production
o Patterning modules -- use technical displays and employ a 'match
the example' methodology.
