High and Low Biodiversity
Do you love to travel? Yes! Perhaps almost everyone loves to travel everywhere, as
they say… ‘’Adventure is worthwhile’’. Our nature is the most beautiful thing that our eyes
can see. That’s why we love to go to different places to sense the beauty of our mother
Earth.
If you will be given a chance to travel for free, which of the pictures below will you
prefer to go to?

Picture A. Desert Picture B. Tropical Rain Forest

SAQ-1. What is the difference between Picture A and Picture B?

SAQ-2. Which do you think has the most numbered living creatures?

Vocabulary

Habitat - A place where organisms make their home. It meets all the environmental
conditions an organism needs to survive.
Ecosystem - A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical
environment.
Stability – The ability of the ecosystem to maintain nature in balance.

High biodiversity in Maintaining the Stability of an Ecosystem

High biodiversity generally means that the area is healthy. For example, trophic
rainforests have many different types of trees, ferns, flowers, birds, insects, and mammals,
so it is one of the most productive and healthiest ecosystems. Therefore high biodiversity-
ecosystem are areas considered to be sustainable because when conflicts arise such as
fires, human interruption, and natural calamities that might affect one or two species, there
are still plenty of others, so nutrients and energy can still transfer from one trophic level to
the next. That’s why high biodiversity is more advantageous in maintaining the stability of an
ecosystem. Among other advantages are as follows:

 The high biodiversity of the plant species will help in the growth and abundance of the
animal species which will feed on the plant species, therefore, maintain stability
between plant and animal species.
 The high biodiversity will promote great variations which will support the adaptation and
evolution of new traits related to species.
 The high biodiversity means a great source of medicine, food, herbs, and meat for the
benefit of human society.
High Greater
Biodiversity Stability

On contrary, if there are only a few different species in the area, (biodiversity is low)
the ecosystem is not considered healthy. Hence, a low biodiversity-ecosystem is considered
of less advantage. Why? Firstly, low biodiversity means that the trophic system is likely less
useful. Since there are fewer species in the various trophic levels, meaning the paths of
energy and nutrients are fewer in number. On top of the ecosystem being much less
productive, this also means that if one species goes extinct or a natural disaster occurs, the
ecosystem is extremely vulnerable to collapse.

Take this example: If there are only three species that are the primary organisms in
the ecosystem (we'll say a hawk, mouse, and a type of grass), one of them could collapse
the whole thing. If hunters shoot all the hawks, there will be no other predator to control the
mice, so the ecosystem will domino to a quick end.

REMEMBER
 Biodiversity refers to the totality of life on Earth. It includes all species of plants, animals,
and microorganisms, the large variety of genes carried by these organisms, and the
huge number of ecosystems and local habitats on the Earth.

 The biodiversity of an ecosystem contributes to the sustainability of that ecosystem. The

higher the biodiversity of an ecosystem, the more sustainable it is.

 There are two (2) types of biodiversity. Low biodiversity is composed of only one or two
kinds of organisms regardless of their population. High biodiversity is composed of many
life forms (species). Its physical environment is sustainable for most of the living
creatures/organisms.

A. There are relatively small numbers of different life forms.
B. Cropped farm like cassava plantation is one of its kinds.
C. A wide range of different organisms is in the ecosystem.
D. Human activities greatly affect the number of life forms in an area.
6. Which ecosystem does NOT belong to high biodiversity?
A. swamps in the tropics
B. equatorial ocean floor
C. tropical rainforest

7. How do biodiversity and sustainability work together?
A. The lower the biodiversity the greater the sustainability.
B. The higher the biodiversity, the greater the sustainability.
C. The higher the biodiversity, the less sustainable the ecosystem
D. Biodiversity has nothing to do with sustainability.
8. Why is biodiversity in an ecosystem so important?
A. Because it can help humans on where to determine good places to develop farmland.
B. Because having high biodiversity allows organisms to withstand environmental
changes.
C. Because places that have healthy biodiversity are unaffected by major disturbances
D. Because having high biodiversity allows for fewer opportunities for competition for
similar resources.
9. Which is most likely to happen when there is higher biodiversity?
A. More organisms are likely to die because they can’t adapt to environmental changes
B. There is more diversity and higher sustainability of life.
C. There is less interaction among organisms.
D. There is more diversity and lower sustainability of life.
10. Which of the following is not true about the advantage of high biodiversity in maintaining
the stability of an ecosystem?
A. The high biodiversity of the plant species will help in the growth and abundance of
the animal species which will feed on the plant species, therefore, maintain stability
between plant and animal species.
B. The high biodiversity of wild animals can harm humans or each other. There will be
more conflicts over territory.
C. The high biodiversity will promote great variations in the gene pool which will support
the adaptation and evolution of new traits associated with species.
