TOPIC Experiment, Outcome, Sample Space, and Event
LEARNING The learner illustrates an experiment, outcome, sample space, and
COMPETENCY event. (M8GE-IVf-1)
IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on separate
sheets.
UNDERSTAND
Experiment, Outcome, Sample Space, and Event
It is necessary to define some important terms related to probability. This lesson
will allow you to familiarize with these terms.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
• Experiment is an activity for which the outcome cannot be
predicted with certainty.
• Outcome is the result of an experiment.
• Sample Space is the set of all possible outcomes of an
experiment.
• Sample Point refers to each individual outcome.
• Event is a subset of the sample space. Thus, it is one or more
outcomes of an experiment.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE 1
The image below shows the two sides of a standard 1-peso coin.
Suppose that a coin is tossed. Determine the following:
a. Experiment
b. Outcomes
c. Sample Space
d. Sample Point
e. Event
ANSWERS:
a. Experiment: tossing a coin
b. Outcomes: landing on head or landing on tail
Thus, in this experiment, there are 2 outcomes.
c. Sample space: {H, T} or {Head, Tail}
d. Sample point: H, T or Head, Tail
e. Possible Events: landing on head or landing on tail

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE 2
Supposed you roll a die once, determine the following:
a. Experiment
b. Outcomes
c. Sample Space
d. Sample Point
e. Event
ANSWERS:
a. Experiment: rolling a die
b. Outcomes: landing on 1 or landing on 2 or landing on 3 or landing on 4
or landing on 5 or landing on 6. Thus, in this experiment, there are 6
outcomes.
c. Sample space: {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
d. Sample Point: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
e. Possible Events: landing on 1
landing on 2
landing on 3
landing on 4
landing on 5
landing on 6

REMEMBER
Key Points
⚫ An experiment is an activity for which the outcome cannot be predicted with
certainty.
⚫ An outcome is the result of an experiment. The set of all possible outcomes of an
experiment is sample space.
⚫ An event is a subset of the sample space. Thus, it is one or more outcomes of an
experiment.

Let’s see how much have you learned today!
General Directions: Study the following assessments carefully and write your answers
on separate sheets.
Assessment 1.
Directions: Match Column A with Column B. Write the letter of the correct answer on a
separate sheet.
COLUMN A COLUMN B
1. a process or an action with observable results A. Experiment
Assessment 2.
Directions: For each experiment, identify the outcome shown and the sample space.

Assessment 3.
Directions: Illustrate the problems below.
1. Ten cards are numbered from 1 to 10. These cards are placed in a bag. One card is
to be picked randomly. What are the elements of the event of picking a prime
number?
NOTE: Prime number is a natural number greater than 1 that is not a product of two
smaller natural numbers.

2. Ten cards are labelled from A to J then placed in a box. Identify the following results
as to experiment, outcomes, sample space, sample point, or event.
1. S = {A, B, C, . . . J}
2. Picking a card in a box
3. Picking a card with vowel letter written on it.
4. A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J
5. Picking card A, card B, card C, card D, card E, card J
