I would like to thank all those who took the time to participate in this assessment which

has allowed me to better understand Climate Change. I would like to express gratitude to my

teacher for guiding me and taking time to grade this assessment. To all group members and

participants, your help was appreciated; finally, I would like to thank God for providing me with

strength to complete this SBA. All efforts were well received and appreciated.
Plan of Investigation

The topic “What Is Climate Change?” was chosen due to the fact that it is branched from

the theme Global Warming. Over the years in many different societies Climate Change has been

affecting humans globally and it presents many threats to people and by extension the society. I

have chosen to do this topic because society has changed and the capabilities and contributions

of caring for our nation have been drastically dropped; by individuals who are practicing human

activities that lead to Climate Change. Climate Change as well as Global Warming should be

taken seriously as it affects us as a nation, as humans it is our duty to preserve our land. As a

student of English I hope to improve my vocabulary and analyzing skills, with doing this

assessment I strive to build a sense of awareness. Which in turn will allow me to become more

knowledgeable as an individual who seeks to be highly aware of changes in the environment. I

intend to gather information through the means of an online article, a poem and a song as these

materials will aid in the completion and understanding of my assessment.

ARTEFACT ONE

The article

Melissa Denchak and Jeff Turrentine : Climate Change What You Need to Know

Published: September 1, 2021

Climate change is generally defined as a significant variation of average weather

conditions—say, conditions becoming warmer, wetter, or drier—over several decades or more.

It’s the longer-term trend that differentiates climate change from natural weather variability.

Record floods. Raging storms. Deadly heat. Climate change manifests itself in myriad ways and

is experienced by every living being, although not equally. Throughout the world, the

economically disadvantaged and people of color—those who have contributed the very least to

the root causes of climate change—are the most likely to suffer from its worst impacts. Here are

the basics on what causes climate change, how it’s affecting the planet and its people, and what

we can do about it.

The mechanics of the earth’s climate system are simple. When energy from the sun is

reflected off the earth and back into space (mostly by clouds and ice), or when the earth’s

atmosphere releases energy, the planet cools. When the earth absorbs the sun’s energy, or when

atmospheric gases prevent heat released by the earth from radiating into space (the greenhouse

effect), the planet warms. A variety of factors, both natural and human, can influence the earth’s

climate system.
ARTEFACT TWO

The Poem

Climate Change by Sylvia Reid

ARTEFACT THREE

The Song

Global Warming by Mr. Parr

Written Report
The theme explored by our group climate change with this report we will be exploring different

pieces/artifacts and how it has affected us and how we can better understand our theme and

topics (climate change/global warming). In this group report we have listened to the insights of

our fellow members and in overcoming some obstacles persevered in the completion of this

assignment sharing different views associated to the topic (climate change/global warming) our

fellow group members.

Each member’s pieces such as piece/artifact one (a short article titled Jamaica Playing its Part to

Combat Climate Change by Charlie Henry). a short article outlining some problems and

solutions that our country (Jamaica) may employ in dealing with climate change. Each member

was clamoring to look into and analyze this piece done by our own country. The second piece a

(YouTube video entitled " How climate affects community health") by Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention (CDC) showed us the ways that climate change can impact community

health, and things the community can do to prepare for it and the third and final piece a (The

poem entitled "Climate change” by Sylvia Reid), is predominantly used to broadcast the imagery

of Climate Change, what it entails and its impact on society.

When analyzing these sources especially piece one each member of the group agrees that the

information offers us a view on what we as a nation can do in rectifying climate change and its

effects, along with it being very informative carrying a lot of relevant information considering

the times we live in. it is very helpful in realizing some solution to the problems we face and how

to solve them such as using alternate sources of energy and recycling. The second artifact helps

in giving a clear and cut view on how we should approach the problems introduced by climate

change in our communities giving meaningful insight and the future problems that may occur if
we do not act quickly such as flooding, forest fires...etc. The poem however really helps in

cementing the dangers and effects of climate change.

Most of these pieces such as artifact 1 (Jamaica playing its part to combat climate change) is to

inform us on the actions we can take in solving this problem (Climate change) collectively. It is

for us to reassure and keep us focused on the goal at hand such as said by Ms. Gordon

“Mitigation is about avoidance and emission reduction from greenhouse gases released from the

burning of fossil fuels. At this point, Jamaica is taking steps for the introduction of electric

vehicles, the reduction in the use of fossil fuels and our fuel consumption. The establishment of

the Wigton Wind Farm and solar parks like Paradise Solar Farms are all mitigation activities,” by

Miss Gordon the Principal Director of the Climate Change Division in the Ministry of Economic

Growth and Job Creation. The poem though short has successfully made us as individuals

imagine the ravages that climate change can do to us and in time the world.

The information is organized in such a way for us to visualize the problems especially the videos

on the effects and solutions to these problems. They especially are ‘Slow in presenting

information’ for us to take in and understand what is being talked about. While being appealing

both visually for us to imagine the different scenarios that can happened appealing the audience’s

conscience.

The video is written in a formal tone and presented very colorfully and cheery even though the

message its carriers is daunting, clear and concise in its delivery with colorful visuals to

accompany them the poem is written in a formal standard English way as it appeals to us

personally and the article also formal and informative. It is written for an informed audience and

very concise.
We choose these artifacts because they are more relevant to the subject (global warming/climate

change) and they are more professional than others in presenting a variety of different views on

the subject (global warming/climate change). While also offering different insights on the topic

at hand (climate change).

Each piece was substantial in the information presented and said they gave us much to think over

and analyze and of course making us more knowledgeable in our topic (climate change).

Reflection One

How the material I have chosen has shaped my thinking

The pieces I have chosen increased my knowledge about Climate Change and by

extension Global Warming. The first article enlightened me on what exactly Climate Change

refers to, it goes on to state what causes this to happen and how it has affected the earth and

humans at large. I was able to conduct further study into the assessment after gaining an

understanding of the foundation of Climate Change. The second piece of evidence in my study is

a poem titled “Climate Change” by Sylvia Reid, using poetic and literary language, I was able to

grasp more insight on Climate Change. The author was intentional in her writing and provided

just enough information to smoothly transfer the knowledge into a poem. She described Climate

Change, the effects and causes while allowing her language to remain poetic. My third and final

piece is a song titled “Global Warming” by Youtuber Mr. Parr, this was chosen due to the fact

that the theme of the assessment is Global Warming at large and it is necessary to mention how

this relates to Climate Change. The song gets the message across while remaining entertaining

and allows us to understand the theme of Global Warming. The song also gives a detailed

description of what Global Warming is and how it can lead to Climate Change which causes a

depletion in the natural occurrences of the earth.

While conducting this assessment it shaped my thinking on the topic of Climate Change

in such a way that I was better able to understand how it affects our society. I was able to gain

insight on the causes and effects of Climate Change on the livelihood of humans and also our

communities. The sudden changes in severe Climate can cause higher sea levels, higher death

rates due to its effects on human life and also various natural disasters. I was able to grasp the

definition and how it is that we as a nation can aid in decreasing Climate Change and by

extension lessen Global Warming. My increased knowledge has allowed me to be more mindful

of the things that I do and how I can benefit my society in a positive way.
Reflection Two

Reflection on the use of Language in the articles

The article written by Denchak and Turrentine which speaks about what there is to know

as it relates to Climate Change, allowed me to grasp a better understanding of what Climate

Change is and the effects it has on society. It is defined as a variation of average weather

conditions that typically becomes warmer, wetter or even drier. Over the years Climate Change

has caused a significant shift from the natural weather that exists this in turn affects the planet as

a whole and humans that reside on it. The rapid change in Climate will allow for more extreme

weather conditions that will affect human life. It will wreak havoc on people’s livelihood and

communities, with more frequent and severe weather conditions, it will also damage plants and

animal life

The poet Sylvia Reid used formal language when she wrote the poem “Climate Change”,

the formality gives the poem a calming and empowering tone. The poet used repetition to

emphasize and strengthen the message which she used to pass along to her fellow citizens, the

poem consists of rhymes in the various stanzas and it adds to the beauty of the poem and the

pleasure given to the readers. Mrs. Reid used every word, every line and every stanza of the

poem to broadcast the imagery of Climate Change and what it entails.

Global warming, the very title of the song, is already stating how powerful the song is

and immediately tells the audience what it is about. It proves that a few words can hold so much

meaning and language just like the title of a song has a deeper meaning, the song overflows with

literary devices such as onomatopoeia, illusion, hyperbole and idioms which assist in helping the

listeners to understand the true meaning of the song. The words of the song which are written in

English, along with the large use of literary devices helps to enhance the listener’s experience

and facilitate the intended purpose for which Mr. Parr wrote the song.

While completing this assessment I observed various uses of language in the articles. I was able

to identify their use of literary devices and also how their tones allowed for better understanding.

The tone of the article also helped me to understand the seriousness of Climate Change and it
was one of great concern. Additionally, the tone of the writer remained the same through the

pieces and the wording created a better description of what Climate Change is, I was able to

visualize the concepts throughout the articles. The pieces were also well organized in wording

and grammar and flowed throughout each paragraph.

Reflection Three

How the SBA process has helped me to become a better person

I started this assignment as a way to increase my knowledge on the topic of Climate

Change and Global Warming, though the assessment is necessary for a part of my grade, I

believe it was necessary to enlighten me. I had the opportunity of researching and gaining insight

on Climate Change and Global Warming and as such it has opened my eyes as it relates to taking

care of our planet.

The theme sparked my interest because for the many years I have heard about Global

Warming and how it has and will affect humanity. I took a keen interest in this school based

assessment as I began to learn about Climate Change and its impact on society and human life.

The process of conducting this School Based Assessment has revealed that climate change is a

global issue that is affecting the development of the nation. Climate Change impacts society in a

way that is negatively developed socially, economically and in some cases politically. Contrary

to all of the negative impacts of Climate Change; I admire the fact that there are a majority of

individuals who are striving to make the world a better place by developing measures and

strategies to reduce this issue. . The process of completing this assignment has also allowed me

to grow as a student of English Language, while developing analytical skills which was a key

benefit of conducting this school based assessment and is one of the main traits needed to excel

in the subject.

While doing this reflection, students are required to keep only one question in constant thought;

how has the process of conducting this school based assessment made them a better person, I

answer by saying: I am a better person because conducting this school based assessment has

inspired me to become a beacon of encouragement for other people who are dealing and have

dealt with the impacts of Climate Change. I am a better person because participating in this

group assignment has allowed me to improve on my communication skills and has also allowed
for the formation of bonds with my peers; this school-based assessment has drastically boosted

my confidence as an academic scholar and has also allowed me to gain and improve on my

academic skills.
