1.A/AN
When you mention something for the first time or say what/who something is.

We bought a car. The car we bought was white.


I bought a new shirt. The shirt I bought was black.
An astronaut went to the moon.

THE
a)when it's clear what something is
b)or you mentioned it before
c)or it is unique.

The Eiffel Tower is about 300m high.


I bought an iphone. The iphone was really expensive.
The Pope is from Argentina.
The Mona Lisa is one of the most famous paintings in the world.

2.NO ARTICLE
When speaking in general with plural or uncountable nouns

Women are more talkative than men.


Water is necessary for survival.
Wild animals are dangerous.
I like sports and folk music.

or with phrases like at home/at work/go home/go to bed/next week/last week/ next month etc

The CN Tower will open next month.


Next month, international travel will resume.
I'll go to bed early tonight.
After work, I'll go home.
I need to go to the hospital next week.

*INSTITUTIONS
school, college, university, prison, jail, church, etc don't use an article if you talk about the
insitution and the usual purpose it is used for. (*except hospital)
Her brother is at university.
I will go to church on Sunday.
I would like to go to college.
I'm going to study an MBA at university.
*I'm in the hospital.
John is in prison for burglary.

You can use an article if you are talking about the building (a/an/the)
She works at a university.
John works in a prison.
There was a fire in a church.

GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES

We don't usually use THE with


1.most countries, continents, regions ending with the name of a country/continent, individual
islands or states.

Brazil is in South America.


Madagascar is an island to the east of Africa.
Hawaii is the 50th state of the USA.
Toronto is in Canada.
In May, I will go to Scotland.

*exceptions: The UK, The US, The Netherlands, The UAE etc
I spent a summer in the Netherlands when I was at university.
We plan to visit the UK.
The Burj Khalifa is in the United Arab Emirates (the UAE).
I would like to visit the USA and the UK.

2.roads, streets, parks, bridges, stores, and restaurants.


The British prime minister lives on Downing street.
There are a lot of stores on 5th avenue.
Central Park is in Manhattan.
Iguazu Falls's national park is beautiful.

*exceptions: highways/motorways and numbered roads.


I was driving on the M45.

3.individual mountains and lakes.

Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa.


Mount Everest is the tallest mountain above sea level.
Lake Titicaca is one of the largest lakes in South America.
Mount Fuji is the most beautiful mountain in Japan.
Lake Louise is the most beautiful place in Canada.

We usually use THE with

1.mountain ranges, rivers, seas, oceans, canals, deserts and island groups.

The Andes is the longest mountain range in South America.


The Nile is the longest river in the world but The Amazon is the largest.
The Panama canal connects the Pacific ocean to the Atlantic ocean.
The Sahara desert is the hottest desert in the world.
I would like to visit The Bahamas.
Mount Everest is found in the Himalayas.

2. theatres, cinemas, hotels, museums, galleries, buildings, monuments.

The Louvre is the largest art museum in the world.


The statue of Liberty was a gift to the US from France.
She is staying at the Hilton hotel.
The Empire state building is the tallest building in New York.
The Smithsonian museum is very beautiful.
I want to visit the Eiffel tower.
