End of Year 10 Assignment

Section A

1. Measurement
a) A pendulum is set in motion and timed. The time measured for 20 complete swing is
30s.
What is the time for one complete swing of the pendulum?
A 0.67S B 0.75s C 1.5s D 3.0s

b) A cook wants to prepare some food to be cooked by 1.15pm. He uses an oven with
an automatic timer that can be set to switch on and off at certain times. The oven
need to be switched on for 2 hours 10 minutes.
At which time does the oven need to swith on?

A 11.05 a.m B 11.25 a.m C 3.05 p.m D 3.25 p.m

c) A stopwatch is used to time an athlete running 100m. The timekeeper forgets to

reset the watch to zero before using it to time another athlete running 100m

How long does the second athlete take to run 100m?

Total Marks [6]
2. Speed, Velocity and acceleration

a)

b)

c) What does the area under the speed-time graph represent?

d) An acceleration is positive if the velocity increases and negative if it decreases. A

negative acceleration is also called a d______________ or r___________________.

Total Marks [6]

3. Falling Bodies/ Free fall

An object that is moving only under the influence of gravity is said to be under free fall. Free
falling objects accelerate at a constant rate.

a)

i) What is the value of the acceleration immediately after he has jumped from the
aeroplane?
ii) What is happening to the parachutist’s speed in region AB?
iii) At what point does the parachutist open his parachute?
iv) Why does the parachutist speed decrease from B to D?

b)
Two stones of different weight fall at the same time from table. Air resistance may be
ignored.
What will happen and why?

c) A stone falls from rest from the top of a high tower. Ignore air resistance and take
g = 10m/s2
i) What is its velocity after 3s?
ii) How far has it fallen after 5s?
Total Marks [8]
4. Density
a) Define density and give its units
b)

The tank is 51m long and 20m wide. The sea-water in that is 11m deep and has a density of
1020kg/m3. Calculate the mass of the tank.

c)
Section B

5. Forces and momentum

a) Define Force.
b) Define Hooke’s Law

c)

If F=ke, where e is the extension of the spring, and k is the spring constant (k=200N/m). Find the
length of each spring, when it is loaded with a load of 1000N

6. Adding forces
When more than one force acts on an object, we can calculate the combined effect of all
the forces as a single force. This single force is called as the resultant force.

a)

b)
c)

7. Circular motion

Objects may travel at a constant speed in a circular path, but their velocity changes
because their direction changes. Since the object’s velocity is changing, it experiences an
acceleration. This acceleration is called as the centripetal acceleration and is directed
towards the centre of the circular path. The value of the Force acting on the object in
circular motion is equal to the mass of the object x acceleration.
𝒎𝒗𝟐
F = ma = (where r is the radius of the circular path)
𝒓
a) A satellite close to the earth(at a height of about 200km) has an orbital speed of 8km/s.
Taking the radius of the orbit as approximately equal to the Earth’s radius of 6400km,
calculate the time it takes to make one orbit.
Total Marks [6]
8. Force and acceleration

a) Newton’s second law states that the acceleration of a body is directly proportional to
the applied force and is inversely proportion to its mass. F = ma. Hence:
Resultant force (N) = Mass(kg) x acceleration(m/s2)

Total Marks [5]

9. Moments and levers

a) Define the Moment of force and state its units. [2]

b)
` Total Marks [10]
10. Energy, work, Power

a)

[2]

State all the energy changes happening from point X to point Y

b)

11. Pressure and liquid pressure

a)

[1]
b)

i) The valve in the exit pipe is closed. The density of water is 1000kg/m3 and the
acceleration of free fall is 10m/s2.

Calculate the pressure of the water acting on the closed valve in the exit pipe.[2]

ii) The cross-sectional area of the pipe is 0.5m2. Calculate the force exerted by the
water on the closed valve. [2]
Section C:

1. Electricity
2. Molecules and Gas Laws

i) Define Brownian motion.

ii) Which statement is the best description of a random walk describing Brownian
motion?
A. The gas or liquid molecule travels in a straight line until its direction is
randomized by a collision with another molecule.
B. A gas or liquid molecule travels a set path due to an outside disturbance.
C. A solid molecule vibrates in its place.
D. A gas molecule spins randomly.
iii) Which of the following statements about liquids is true?

A. Liquid molecules are far apart.

B. Liquids fill up all the space of their container.
C. Liquid molecules travel in straight lines between collisions.
D. Liquids molecules travel in curved paths.
