Exercise
1. A man walking at the rate of 5 km/hr. crosses a bridge in 15 minutes. The length of
the bridge (in meters) is
ans: Speed of the man = 5 km/hr
so,to convert hr into minutes
=5*1000/60m/min
=250/3m/min
formula
distance=speed*time
=250/3*15
=1250 length of the bridge

2. Two men start together to walk a certain distance, one at 4 km/h and another at 3
km/h. The former arrives half an hour before the latter. Find the distance.
Ans: Suppose the distance be x.
x/4-x/3=1/2
4x-3x/12=1/2
x=1/2*12
x=6
so the distance is 6km.

3. A train starts from a place A at 6 a.m. and arrives at another place B at 4.30 p.m. on
the same day. If the speed of the train is 40 km per hour, find the distance travelled by
the train?
Ans : find distance ?
Given: start at 6am and arrive at 4.30pm
The time taken by train is 10 1/2hr
it is known as 21/2
speed=40km/hr.
Formula :distance=speed *time
=40*21/2
=420km/hr

4. Sarita and Julie start walking from the same place in the opposite directions. If Julie
walks at a speed of 2 ½ km/hr and Sarita at a speed of 2 km/hr, in how much time will
they be 18 km apart?
ans :
Relative speed
=5/2+2=9/2km/hr
time=distance/relative speed
=18/9/2=4hr

5. A car can finish a certain journey in 10 hours at the speed of 42 kmph. In order to
cover the same distance in 7 hours, the speed of the car (km/h) must be increased?
Ans ; Given total distance=speed* time
=42*10=420km
new given time=7hr
speed=420/7=60km/hr
the increase speed is=60-42=18km/hr

6.The length of a train and that of a platform are equal. If with a speed of 90 km/hr the
train crosses the platform in one minute, then the length of the
train (in metres) is :
Ans : let length of both train and platform be x
distance covered by the train to cross the platform=x+x=2x
time=1min=60sec
speed=90km/hr
=90*518=25m/sec
formula=distance =speed*time
=2x=25*60=750m

class : symca div :b rollno :05 sub : apptitude

7.A train travelling at a speed of 30 m/sec crosses a platform, 600 metres long, in 30
seconds. The length (in metres) of train is
ans :
Total distance covered by the train in 30 seconds with the speed of 30m/sec

= 30×30 m/s

= 900 metres

Total distance = train′s length+platform′s length

900=train′s length+600900
=train′s length+600 when train crosses platform it covers length equal to length of
train + length of platform.
8. A train, 110m long, is running at a speed of 60km/hr. How many seconds does it take
to cross another train, 170 m long, standing on parallel track?
9. How many seconds will a 500 metre long train take to cross a man walking with a
speed of 3 km/hr. in the direction of the moving train if the speed of the train is 63 km/hr.
?
ans :
Relative Speed = 63-3 = 60 Km/hr
= 60 *(5/18) = 50/3 m/sec

Time taken to pass the man will ne

500∗350=30 seconds

10. A man observed that a train 120 m long crossed him in 9 seconds. The speed (in
km/hr) of the train was

ans :
speed of train
=120/9*18/5
=48km/hr
