Series Completion

This chapter consists of questions in which series of number or alphabetical letters or


combinations of both are given, which are generally called the terms of the series. These
terms follow a certain pattern throughout the series. The candidate is required to study the
given series, identify the pattern followed in the series and either complete the given series
with the most suitable alternative or find the wrong term in the series.

Types of Series:

1) Number Series
a) Missing Number Series.
e.g. Find the number in the blank of the series : 3, 7, 15, 31, 63, 127, ___

b) Wrong Pattern Series


e.g. Find out the wrong term in the series: 6, 10, 27, 105, 515, 3084

2) Alphabet Series
 Continuous Pattern Series
e.g.1) Find out the missing alphabet in the series : C, F, I, __, O, R
e.g. 2) Complete from the given set of alternatives : _stt_tt_tts_

3) Alphanumeric Series
e.g. Find the next term in the alpha-numeric series: Z1A, X2D, V6G, T21J, R88M, P445P, ?

Tips and Tricks to solve Series Questions :

 Learn the Squares of all the natural numbers from 1 to 25.

 Learn the Cubes of all the natural numbers from 1 to 15.

 Series based on Prime Numbers.

 Check for the sequence by analyzing the series by checking the difference, by
dividing, by checking multiples etc. between the consecutive terms.

 Triangular pattern series or difference of difference series.

 Remember the EJOTY, VQLGB and CFILORUX rule for alphabet and alphanumeric
series.

Note: There are 25 Prime Numbers between 1 to 100 and 46 prime Numbers between 1 to
200.

Between 1 to 50: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47.
Between 51-100: 53, 59, 61, 67, 71, 73, 79, 83, 89, 97.
Between 100-200: 101, 103, 107, 109, 113, 127, 131, 137, 139, 149, 151, 157, 163, 167,
173, 179, 181, 191, 193, 197, 199.

Common types of series :

 Perfect Square Series, Perfect Cube Series.


 Mixed Number Series.
 Prime Series, Alternate Primes Series.
 Every third number can be the sum of the preceding two numbers.
 Every third number can be the product of the preceding two numbers.
 Every succeeding term is got by multiplying the previous term by a constant number
or numbers which follow a special pattern.
 Triangular Pattern Series.
 Arithmetic Progression (A.P). Remember Tn= {a+ (n-1)d}
 Geometric Progression (G.P). Remember Tn = arn-1
