Math 9-Q1-L1-Quadratic Equation

This document provides an introduction to quadratic equations including definitions, examples, and objectives. It defines quadratic equations as second-order polynomial equations where the variable is squared. Standard form is given as ax^2 + bx + c = 0 and examples are provided to illustrate quadratic and non-quadratic equations. Key characteristics of quadratic equations like the coefficients and roots are also discussed.

Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner should
be able to:
illustrate quadratic equations;
convert from the standard form of a
quadratic equation to its general form
and vice versa;

Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner
should be able to:
characterize the roots of a quadratic
equation using the discriminant; and
describe the relationship between the
coefficients and the roots of a quadratic
equation.
Quadratic Equation
Quadratic polynomial : ax2 + bx + c
If quadratic polynomial = 0
Quadratic equation : ax2 + bx + c = 0
Definition
A quadratic equation is a second-order polynomial
equation in a single variable x and 𝒂 = 𝟎.
The name Quadratic comes from "quad" meaning
square, because the variable gets squared (like
x2).
Definition
It is also called an "Equation of Degree 2"
(because of the exponent "2" on the x).
Standard Form
ax2 + bx + c = 0
Where a, b, and c are real numbers and a≠0.
In the equation, ax2 is the quadratic term, bx is the
linear term, and c is the constant term.
Example(s):
Determine whether the following equation are quadratic
or not.

1. 2x2 + 5x - 3 = 0 Quadratic equation

a=2, b=5 and c = -3

Example(s):
2. 3x(x-2) = 10 3x2 - 6x = 10
3x2 - 6x - 10 = 0
Quadratic equation
a= 3, b= -6 and c = -10
Example(s):
3. (x + 3) + 8 = 0 x + 11 = 0

Not a Quadratic equation

Example(s):
4. 0 = x(x + 3)(x - 5) x(x2 - 5x + 3x -15) = 0
x(x2 - 2x - 15) = 0
x3 - 2x2 - 15x = 0
Not a Quadratic equation
Example(s):
5. (2x + 5)(x - 1) = -6 2x2 - 2x + 5x - 5 = -6
2x2 + 3x - 5 = -6
Quadratic equation 2x2 + 3x - 5 + 6 = 0
a=2, b=3 and c = 1 2x2 + 3x + 1 = 0
When b = 0 in the equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, it
results to a quadratic equation of the form ax2
+c=0
Example(s):
4. x2 + 5 = 0
5. 2x2 + 7 = 0
6. 16x2 - 9 = 0
Quadratic equations can also lack the
constant term, or c = 0
Example(s):
4. x2 + 7x = 0
5. 2x2 + 8x = 0
6. -12x2 + 13x = 0
Key Points to Remember
The Standard Form of quadratic equation is :

ax2 + bx + c = 0
Where a, b, and c are real numbers and a≠0.
