The 7 Layers of the OSI Model:

1. Physical Layer:

2. Data Link Layer:


 Responsible for node-to-node data transfer.
 Packages data into frames and corrects errors that may have occurred at the physical
layer.
 Consists of two sub-layers: Media Access Control (MAC) and Logical Link Control (LLC).

3. Network Layer:

 Receives frames from the data link layer and delivers them to their intended destinations
based on logical addresses (e.g., IP).

4. Transport Layer:

 Manages the delivery and error checking of data packets.


 Regulates the size, sequencing, and transfer of data between systems and hosts.
 Common example: Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).

5. Session Layer:

 Sets up, manages, and terminates sessions or connections.

6. Presentation Layer:

 Formats or translates data for the application layer based on the application's syntax
 Handles encryption and decryption required by the application layer.
 Sometimes called the syntax layer.

7. Application Layer:

 Where end users and the application layer interact directly with software applications.

The OSI Model and it's a protocol-independent model used to understand network
communication across seven distinct layers.

TCP/IP protocol suite ,an overview of the four main types of addresses:

1. Physical (Link) Addresses:

 Also known as Media Access Control (MAC) addresses.


 Identifies a device within the same local network.
 Used for communication within the local network segment (LAN or WAN).
 Usually a 48-bit (6-byte) address format, such as 07:01:02:01:2C:4B for Ethernet.
 Provides low-level addressing and is used at the data link layer.
 Required for communication on the same physical network.
 Hardcoded into the device during manufacture, cannot be changed.

2. Logical (IP) Addresses:

 Used for global network communication.


 Globally unique and ensures that no two publicly addressed and visible hosts on the
Internet have the same IP address.
 A 32-bit address in IPv4 (e.g., 192.168.1.1).
 Used at the network layer for routing data across networks.
 Assigned to device with software configurations, can be changed anytime

3. Port Addresses:

 Used to identify specific services or processes running on a host.


 Port numbers are 16 bits in length.

4. Specific Addresses:

 Some applications have user-friendly addresses designed for specific purposes.


 Examples include email addresses and Universal Resource Locators (URLs).
 Email addresses define recipients for email communication.
 URLs are used to locate documents or resources on the World Wide Web.

Data Link Control (DLC) involves several services and functions, including framing, flow control,
and error control. Here, we'll focus on framing, which is one of the key functions of DLC.

Framing in the data link layer is the process of dividing a continuous stream of bits into distinct
frames, which serve as separate units of data transmission. Framing is essential to distinguish one
frame from another in data communication. It adds structure to the data being transmitted,
allowing receivers to identify the boundaries of frames.

Framing serves several purposes:

1. It defines the start and end of each frame so that the receiver knows where one frame
ends and the next one begins.
2. Addressing: Each frame typically includes sender and receiver addresses. The destination
address is used to route the frame to the correct recipient. The sender's address may be
used for acknowledgment and error handling.
3. Error Detection: Framing may include error-checking mechanisms, cyclic redundancy
checks (CRC), to detect transmission errors within the frame.

There are two common approaches to framing in the data link layer: character-oriented framing
and bit-oriented framing.

Character-Oriented Framing:
 In character-oriented framing, data is treated as sequences of characters (usually 8-bit
bytes).
 Frames begin and end with a special delimiter character (often a byte or character) to
indicate frame boundaries.
 To avoid ambiguity, a technique called byte stuffing (or character stuffing) is used. When
the delimiter character appears in the data, it is preceded by an escape character (ESC) to
distinguish it from the delimiter.
 Byte stuffing is process of adding an extra byte whenever there is a flag or escape
character in the middle of the text.

Bit-Oriented Framing:

 In bit-oriented framing, data is treated as sequences of bits rather than characters.


 Frames begin and end with a special bit pattern, known as a flag, that is not allowed to
appear within the data.
 To ensure that the flag pattern doesn't accidentally appear within the data, a technique
called bit stuffing is used. If a specific bit pattern (e.g., 01111110) is encountered in the
data, an extra bit (0) is added to distinguish it from the flag.
 Note that the extra bit is added after one 0 followed by five 1s regardless of the value of
the next bit. 0111110……
 Bit stuffing allows flags to be unambiguously identified within the data stream.

Flow control and error control are crucial functions of the data-link layer in a network. These
functions help ensure the reliable and efficient transmission of data.

Flow Control: Flow control addresses the issue of balancing the rate of data transmission
between a sender and a receiver.

 If data is produced too quickly and overwhelms the receiver, the receiver might need to
discard data, which can result in data loss.
 If data is produced too slowly, the system becomes inefficient, and the receiver must wait
for data.

Flow control can be implemented as follows:

 Feedback from Receiver to Sender: In some cases, the receiving node provides
feedback to the sending node, indicating that it should slow down or stop sending data
temporarily to prevent overloading the receiver.

Error Control: Error control mechanisms ensure the integrity of data transmission. When data is
transmitted over a network, it may be subject to errors due to various factors, such as noise or
interference. Error control helps detect and correct errors in the transmitted data. In the data-link
layer, this is typically achieved using cyclic redundancy checks (CRCs) or other error-detection
techniques:

 . There are two primary methods for handling errors:


 Silent Discard: If the frame is corrupted, it is silently discarded, and no
acknowledgment is sent to the sender. This method is commonly used in wired
LANs like Ethernet.
 Acknowledgment: If the frame is not corrupted, an acknowledgment is sent to
the sender. This acknowledgment serves both flow control and error control
purposes. If no acknowledgment is received, the sender can assume that there
was a problem with the sent frame and may attempt to resend it.

Connectionless and Connection-Oriented Protocols: Data-link layer protocols can be classified


as either connectionless or connection-oriented:

 Connectionless Protocol: In connectionless protocols, frames are sent independently,


without establishing any connections between them. There is no sense of ordering or
numbering. Connectionless protocols are commonly used in LANs.
 Connection-Oriented Protocol: In connection-oriented protocols, a logical connection
must first be established between two nodes before data transmission begins. Frames are
numbered and sent in order. Connection-oriented protocols are more common in point-
to-point protocols,

Data Link Layer Protocols:

1. Simple Protocol:
 Assumes no flow or error control.
 FSM with two states: Ready state and Blocking state.
 Sender waits for a request from the network layer to send a frame.
 Sender transitions to the blocking state when sending a frame.
 Timer used for handling frame timeouts.
 Receiver either acknowledges received frames or discards corrupted ones.
2. Stop-and-Wait Protocol:
 Used for both flow and error control.
 Sender sends one frame at a time and waits for acknowledgments.
 Uses CRC for error control.
 Timer is started with each frame transmission.
 FSMs for sender and receiver states.
 Sequence and acknowledgment numbers used to prevent duplicates.

Sequence and Acknowledgment Numbers:


 Added to data frames and ACK frames.
 Sequence numbers start with 0; acknowledgment numbers start with 1.
 Acknowledgment number indicates the next expected sequence number.
 Prevents duplicate frames and ensures correct order of frame transmission.
3. Piggybacking:
 Technique in bidirectional communication.
 Data and acknowledgments combined in a single transmission.
 Used to make communication more efficient.
 Adds complexity to data-link layer protocols and not commonly practiced.
 When node A is sending data to node B, Node A also acknowledges the data
received from node B

High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC):

1. Overview:
 HDLC is a bit-oriented protocol used for communication over point-to-point and
multipoint links.
 It implements a variation of the Stop-and-Wait protocol.
2. Configurations and Transfer Modes:
 HDLC provides two common transfer modes: Normal Response Mode (NRM) and
Asynchronous Balanced Mode (ABM).
3. Framing:
 HDLC defines three types of frames for different types of messages: Information
Frames (I-frames), Supervisory Frames (S-frames), and Unnumbered Frames (U-
frames).
 Each HDLC frame consists of up to six fields, including a flag field, an address
field, a control field, an information field, a Frame Check Sequence (FCS) field, and
an ending flag field.
 The flag field contains the synchronization pattern "01111110" that marks the
beginning and end of the frame.
 The address field contains the address of the secondary station, indicating "to"
or "from" addresses
 The control field is one or two bytes used for flow and error control, and its
format varies based on the frame type.
 The information field contains user data or management information from the
network layer.
 The FCS field serves as the error detection mechanism CRC.
4. Control Field Formats:
 The control field format varies depending on the frame type.
 The control field in HDLC frames determines the frame type and its functionality.

Control Field for I-Frames:

 I-frames are used to carry user data from the network layer and can include flow and
error control information (piggybacking).
 The control field in I-frames contains several subfields:
1. Type Bit: The first bit indicates the type of the frame, with 0 representing an I-
frame.
2. N(S) (Sequence Number): The next 3 bits define the sequence number of the
frame, allowing sequence numbers from 0 to 7.
3. N(R) (Acknowledgment Number): The last 3 bits correspond to the
acknowledgment number when piggybacking is used.
4. P/F Bit (Poll/Final Bit): The single bit between N(S) and N(R) serves a dual
purpose:
 When set to 1, it can indicate "poll" when the frame is sent by a primary
station to a secondary (when the address field contains the receiver's
address).
 It can indicate "final" when the frame is sent by a secondary to a primary
(when the address field contains the sender's address).

Control Field for S-Frames:

 Supervisory frames (S-frames) are used for flow and error control when piggybacking is
either impossible or inappropriate. S-frames do not have information fields.
 The control field in S-frames has the following subfields:
1. First 2 Bits: The first 2 bits indicate the frame type. If they are 10, the frame is an
S-frame.
2. N(R) (Acknowledgment Number): The last 3 bits correspond to either the
acknowledgment number (ACK) or the negative acknowledgment number (NAK),
depending on the type of S-frame.
3. Code Subfield (2 Bits): The code subfield defines the type of S-frame. There are
four types of S-frames:
 Receive Ready (RR): Code subfield = 00,
 Receive Not Ready (RNR): Code subfield = 10,
 Reject (REJ): Code subfield = 01,
 Selective Reject (SREJ): Code subfield = 11

Control Field for U-Frames:

 Unnumbered frames (U-frames) are used for session management and control
information between connected devices.
 The control field in U-frames includes subfields for handling system management
information:
 A 2-bit prefix before the P/F bit and a 3-bit suffix after the P/F bit.
 These subfields, totaling 5 bits, can be used to create up to 32 different types of
U-frames.

Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP):

Framing:

 PPP uses a character-oriented (byte-oriented) frame.


 The PPP frame format includes:
 Flag: A 1-byte flag with the bit pattern 01111110 at the start and end of the
frame.
 Address: Set to the constant value 11111111 (broadcast address).
 Control: Set to the constant value 00000011. PPP doesn't provide flow control,
and error control is limited to error detection.
 Protocol: used to define what's carried in the data field (user data or other
information).
 Payload field: Carries user data or other information. It's a sequence of bytes
with a default maximum size of 1500 bytes Byte-stuffing is used if the flag byte
pattern appears within this field. Padding may be needed if the data field size is
less than the negotiated maximum value.
 FCS (Frame Check Sequence): A standard CRC for error checking.

Byte Stuffing:

 Because PPP is a byte-oriented protocol, whenever the flag appears in the data section of
the frame, an escape byte (01111101) is used to signal to the receiver that the next byte is
not a flag.
 The escape byte itself is also stuffed with another escape byte.

Transition Phases:

 The states and transitions are as follows:


1. Dead State: There is no active carrier, and the line is quiet. No communication is
taking place.
2. Establish State: When one of the two nodes initiates communication, the
connection moves into the establish state. Options are negotiated between the
two parties. If both parties agree on authentication, this extra step is carried out;
otherwise, they can proceed with simple communication. Link-control protocol
packets are used for negotiation.
3. Authenticate State (Optional): If authentication is required and agreed upon in
the establish state, the system performs the authentication process.
4. Open State: In the open state, data transfer occurs. Parties can exchange data
packets. The connection remains in this state until one of the endpoints wants to
terminate the connection.
5. Terminate State: If a connection reaches this state, it's in the process of being
terminated. The system remains in this state until the carrier (physical-layer signal)
is dropped, returning the system to the dead state.

Media Access Control (MAC):

When multiple nodes or stations are connected and share a common communication medium,
there's a need for a media access control (MAC) protocol. MAC protocols determine how stations
or nodes access and use the shared medium. These protocols are responsible for coordinating
access to the medium and ensuring that different stations can communicate without interference
or conflicts. These protocols exist within the data-link layer of the OSI model.
MAC protocols can be categorized into three groups:

1. Channel Partitioning:
 Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA): Divides the available bandwidth
into various frequency bands, and each station is allocated a specific frequency
band.
 Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA): Divides the channel's bandwidth into
time slots, and each station is assigned a specific time slot for data transmission.
 Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA): Allows multiple stations to transmit
data simultaneously over the entire frequency range using unique code
sequences.

2. Random Access:
 In random access protocols, no station has priority over another, and stations are
not assigned control over others.
 Stations can transmit data when they want, following a predefined procedure, and
they need to check the state of the medium (idle or busy).
 Random access protocols include the original ALOHA and its variations, Carrier
Sense Multiple Access (CSMA), Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision
Detection (CSMA/CD), and Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance
(CSMA/CA).

 In polling protocols, one station, often referred to as a master or primary station,
takes control and allows other stations to transmit data in a controlled manner.
 The primary station polls other stations, giving them permission to transmit data
during their designated time slots.

These MAC protocols ensure that data transmissions on shared communication mediums occur
in an orderly and efficient manner.

Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) is a media access control method used to minimize the
chances of collisions in a shared communication medium. It requires stations to listen or sense
the medium for activity before attempting to transmit data. CSMA is based on the principle
"sense before transmit" or "listen before talk." While CSMA can reduce the probability of collision,
it cannot completely eliminate it.

Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) builds upon the CSMA
method by adding a procedure to handle collisions. In CSMA/CD, a station that sends a frame
continuously monitors the medium to check if the transmission is successful. If a collision is
detected, the station will retransmit the frame.

Here's how CSMA/CD works:

1. Station A starts sending the bits of its frame.


2. Station C, unaware of Station A's transmission, begins transmitting its frame.
3. A collision occurs, typically when Station C's bits interfere with Station A's bits.
4. Both Station A and Station C detect the collision.
5. They immediately abort their transmissions.
6. To notify all other stations of the collision, a short jamming signal is sent.

This method's effectiveness relies on the ability to detect a collision before the frame
transmission is complete, allowing stations to abort the transmission early.

For CSMA/CD to function properly, the frame transmission time (Tfr) must be at least two times
the maximum propagation time (Tp).

If a collision is detected, a jamming signal is sent to alert all stations on the network.

Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) is a media access control
method, primarily designed for wireless networks. In CSMA/CA, collisions are avoided using
several strategies, including the interframe space (IFS), the contention window, and
acknowledgments.

Here's a breakdown of the key components and strategies used in CSMA/CA:

1. Interframe Space (IFS): The IFS is a waiting period introduced to avoid collisions. Even
when the channel appears to be idle, a station does not transmit immediately. The IFS

2. Contention Window: The contention window is a time period divided into slots. A
station ready to send data selects a random number of slots as its waiting time. The
number of slots in the contention window follows a binary exponential backoff strategy.
The station must sense the channel after each time slot and, if the channel is busy, pause
the timer and restart it when the channel is idle. This mechanism prioritizes stations with
longer waiting times.
3. Acknowledgment: To ensure successful data transmission and reception,
acknowledgments are used. These help guarantee that the receiver acknowledges the
receipt of a frame. If a collision occurs or the data is corrupted, acknowledgments, along
with timeout timers, play a vital role in ensuring the integrity of data transfer.

Hidden-Station Problem: The hidden-station problem occurs when one station is out of range
of another station, leading to potential interference. The use of RTS and CTS frames helps
address this issue. If a station receives a CTS frame, it knows that some hidden station is using the
channel and refrains from transmitting until the allocated duration is over.

to make sure no packet can get lost and live for an indefinite period of time (a packet
