Agenda
• Trends and advantages with CO2

• Solutions
• REMA 1000 - Denmark

• TransGourmet – Germany

• German Discounter – Ireland

• Mathem – Sweden

• Questions, Whom to contact & Next steps

Trends
• Focus on installation costs versus lifetime costs

• Focus on lower total energy consumptions

• Focus on less complexity – easy installation and

maintenance

• Phase out hazardous refrigerants -> implementation

of natural refrigerants

• Use standardized transcritical CO2 racks

Lower total energy consumptions

Less maintenance
Sustainable solution
Why CO2
• Estimated 40-50 % saving on first cost
• Similar energy efficiency over full year
• Very efficient part load operation
• Minimum on-site installation
• No risk of mixing refrigerant or oils
• No ammonia safety management
• Operation without pump systems reduces complexity
• No dry cooler and water system needed for the
condenser
• Efficient heat recovery
• Easier for contractors used to CO2 systems from
food retail to work with distribution centres

40-50% saving on first cost

Less complexity
Same system as for food retail stores

Total system performance

• Total system performance calculation adding

extra Dt on the ammonia system due to

• 3K lower evaporating temperature for the

cascade cooler
• 4 % extra power consumption for the
refrigerant and dry cooler pumps
• 3K extra for the water cooled to dry cooler
PHE

• Adding the above makes a transcritical

system as efficient as an ammonia cascade
system.
Less maintenance for transcritical systems
• Semi hermetic piston compressors operate up to 100.000 hours or more without maintenance.

• As no maintenance is required, using many compressors is not a problem, but it offers flexibility at
part load with redundancy compressors in operation

• Statistics from Bitzer states that 1 out of 150 compressors can fail in a lifespan of 100.000 hours

• Only basic spare parts such as filter inserts and drier cores is required

• Recommended oil sample yearly

Solutions Overview - Customisable
SteelX MT /LT: 400 / 230kW

SteelXL MT / LT: 1400 / 700 KW

REMA1000
• Rema1000 distribution centre in Denmark
(Reitan Distribution)
• New distribution centre with high energy efficiency
refrigeration
• Medium temperature (MT) only
• High-capacity requirements

• Energy savings

• Alternative to ammonia
Solution
• SteelXL for direct expansion MT only
• High efficiency with parallel compressors
• 960 kW @ -4°C capacity on a single frame
• High suction pressure and permanent magnet motors
• Basic system, in operation since 2018
TransGourmet Cash & Carry
• 30.000 m2 distribution center Hamburg Germany

• High capacity on several suction groups

• High efficiency dx system

• Integrated AC and heat recovery system

• Large system requires efficient oil management

• Space constraints

• Started up in 2019
Solution
4 identical racks Steel XL 4+3x4 – delivered split in 2
• 100 kW AC @+7 °C
• 375 kW MT @ -3 °C
• 266 kW @ -28°C
• Heat recovery 2 stage
• Gas ejector with parallel compression
• LSPM motors
• Ultra Low Superheat Module (ULS)
Ultra-Low Superheat Module
The most energy efficient system with the current technology

• It replaces the pump system and thereby the complexity of

flooded systems -> 95% of the energy savings can be obtained for 25% of
the price.
• It allows very low returning temperature from the evaporators,
is very robust and will collect any returning liquid.
• Typically, the suction pressure can be increased by around 4-5
kelvin resulting in energy savings around 10%.
• Payback time in warm climate less than 2 years, comparing with standard
parallel system
• Combined with a gas ejector additional savings up to 20% can be
achieved
Ultra-Low Superheat Module
• Everything connected from factory or delivered separate
on a module – tested from factory

• It can be placed separately any where and takes

up less space

• Great side effects

• Subcooling of liquid line
• ~10% less mass flow in suction line
• Up to 70% reduction in defrosting

Most energy efficient system

Factory tested
Flexible placement
Ejector and ULS – how and why
• 95% as efficient and 25% of the price of a pump module due to CO2
• Liquid and gas ejectors can be used to optimize the solution
• The overall efficiency will depend on the actual yearly weather conditions
• If heat recovery with high temperature output is needed the ejectors operation will be
more stable
