8 Coordinate Geometry of Straight Lines

8.3A Parallel Lines

Name: _________________________ Class: ___________

Objectives: 1. Recognize the conditions for two straight lines to be parallel on a rectangular coordinate plane.
2. Use the relationship between the slopes of a pair of parallel lines to solve some geometric problems.

Key Points
Let m1 and m2 be the slopes of straight lines L1 and L2 respectively.
If L1 // L2, then m1 = m2.

Note: The above result is also applicable for two

horizontal lines but not for two vertical lines.

1. In each of the following figures, L2 is parallel to L1. Find the slope of L2.
(a) (b)

Solution Solution

2. In the figure, L1 passes through P(3, 0) and Q(–1, 6). L2 passes

through R(k, –4) and S(4, –7). If L1 // L2, find the value of k.
