Introduction
This module contains the “know” and “do” practices in Installation of Electrical
Lighting System on Auxiliary Outlets and Lighting Fixtures. It covers the knowledge, skills
and attitudes required in installing auxiliary outlets and lighting fixtures. Specifically, this
module covers wires and cables, electrical symbols, and wiring diagrams.
Objectives
1. Learn the different types of wires and cables.
2. Draw the different electrical symbols.
3. Read and perform the activities properly.
Wires are those conductors 3.26mm or No.8AWG and smaller in size. Cables on the
other hand, are those which are larger than the wires. Wires and Cables are either:
1
Stranded wire- contains a group of wires twisted to form a metallic string.
2
Mineral Insulated Cable (MI) is a factory assembly of one or more conductors insulated
with highly compressed refractory mineral insulation enclosed in a liquid and gas tight
continuous copper sheath. This type of cable is used in dry, wet or continuously moist
locations as service feeders or branch circuits.
Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable (NM) is also a factory assembly of two or more insulated
conductors having a moisture resistant, flame retardant, and non-metallic material outer
sheath. This type is used specifically for one- or two-family dwellings not exceeding 3 storey
buildings.
Service Entrance Cable is a single or multi- conductor assembly provided with or without
an overall covering primarily used for service wire.
Medium Voltage Cable (MV) is a single or multi conductor solid dielectric insulated cable
rated at 2,000 volts or higher. This type is used for power systems up to 35,000 volts.

ALL 600 VOLTS JACKETED CABLES
Typical construction of jacketed building wire such as Type T and Type TW conductors
normally solid through No. 8 AWG, and Stranded from No. 6 AWG and larger
Electrical Symbols are small drawings or pictograms used to represent various electrical
devices in a diagram or plan of an electrical circuit. These symbols are used in sketching
schematic diagrams and electrical plans for numerous types of electrical works.
