Tutorial Sheet-2
Course No. MATH F113 Course title: Probability and Statisitcs

——————————————————————————

(1) If A, B and C are random events in a sample space and if A, B and

C are pairwise independent and A is independent of (B ∪ C), then
A, B and C are mutually independent.
(2) A manager has 2 assistants and he bases his decision on information
supplied independently by each one of them. The probability that
he makes a mistake in his thinking is 0.005. The probability that an
assistant gives wrong information is 0.3. Assuming that the mistakes
made by the manager are independent of the information given by
the assistants, find the probability that he reaches a wrong decision.
(3) For any 3 events A, B, C defined on the sample space S, such that
B ⊂ C and P (A) > 0, prove that P (B/A) ≤ P (C/A).
(4) If P (A) = P (B) = P (A ∩ B), then show that
P ((A ∩ B̄) ∪ (Ā ∩ B)) = 0.
(5) Consider an experiment that has N outcomes, say w1 , w2 , · · · , wN ,
where it is known that outcome wj+1 is twice as likely as outcome
wj , j = 1, 2, · · · , N − 1. If Ak = {w1 , w2 , · · · , wk } find P (Ak ).
(6) Five distinct numbers are randomly distributed to players numbered
1 through 5. Whenever two players compare their numbers, the one
with higher one is declared the winner. Initially, players 1 and 2
compare their numbers; the winner then compares with player 3,
and so on. Let X denote the number of times player 1 is winner.
Find P (X = i), i = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4
(7) A bag contains five balls and it is not known how many of them are
white. Three balls were drawn at from the bag and they were all
noted to be white and were put back into the bag. If two balls drawn
at random, find the probability that the two balls are white.
(8) A person tosses a fair coin until a tail appears for the first time. If
the tail appears on the nth flip, the person wins Rs. 2n . Let X
denote the player’s winnings. Show that E(X) = +∞.
(9) Find the probability distribution and c.d.f. for the r.v. X, where X
is the number of divisors of a randomly chosen integer from 1 to 10.
(10) A fair die is tossed. Let X be r.v. denoting ’twice the number
appearing’ and Y be the r.v. 1 or 3 accordingly as odd or even
number appears. Then find the probability distribution, expectation
and variance for the r.v. Z = X + Y and W = X.Y . Also, verify
(i) E(Z) = E(X) + E(Y )
(ii) V ar(Z) 6= V ar(X) + V ar(Y )
(iii) E(W ) 6= E(X).E(Y )
(11) Let X be a r.v. taking values 1, 2 and 3 with respective probabilities
0.3, 0.5 and 0.2.
(i)Find the expectation, variance and s.d. of X.
(ii)Find the expectation, variance and s.d. of Y = Φ(X) where
(a)Φ(X) = 2X , (b)Φ(X) = X 2 + 3X + 4,
