Introduction to Microsoft Word

1. Start Microsoft Word.


To start Microsoft Word
a) Using Start menu in the desktop click the Microsoft Word application.
b) Using Start menu, Run command, type winword.
c) Using right click option, click New, Microsoft word document.

2. Create a new document


To create a new document
a) Open Microsoft Word application, go to File menu and click New; click Blank
document; it will open new document.
b) Go to the folder where you want new word document; right click the mouse; go to
the option New and click Microsoft Word document.

3. Create a new file from a template or wizard


To create a new file from a template or wizard

Open Microsoft Word application, go to File menu and click New; click templates; it
will open the sample templates; you can choose the template you want to use.

4. Open an existing file

Open Microsoft Word application, go to File menu and click Open; Dialog box will
open the Existing files list; you can choose the file you want to open.

5. Explore Word’s user interface


To explore Word’s user interface go through the entire menu in the Toolbar of
Microsoft Word application. Go through the ribbons.

6. Create a folder
To create a folder
a) To create a folder in the Desktop; right click the mouse; click the option New;
click the Folder.
b) To create a folder in the D drive; click the New folder option in the navigation
bar. Click the option to create a new Folder.

7. Save a Word Document


To save a document in Microsoft Word
a) Go to File menu click Save option and save the document in the desired location.
b) Click CTRL + S to save the existing file after further use.

8. Use of Office Assistant to Get Help


To use Office Assistant to get Help go to file menu; Help option; Microsoft office
Help.

9. Close Microsoft Word


To clos e Microsoft Word; go to File Menu; Click Exit or you can simply click the cross
button on the upper right corner of the Microsoft Word window.

Editing Text (Edit Function)

1. Use Enter and edit Text


You use Enter in MS-Word to go to next line. To edit text, we click in the cursor
where we want to edit the text.
2. Use undo and Redo options
We use Undo option to undo our work once cut or deleted and use Redo option
to undo our work twice that have been deleted.

3. Use cutting, copying and pasting text


We use cut option to delete the thing from that place and to paste the thing in
required place.
We use copy option to duplicate the thing from one place to paste in another
place.
We use paste option when we cut or copy things from one place to paste it in
another place.

4. Insert new text


We insert new text by placing the cursor of the mouse at the place where we
want to insert text and start typing.

5. Format text
Formatting text in Microsoft Word involves tasks like bolding the text, italicizing
it, and changing the font and size. The commands to perform all of
these formatting tasks are found on the Home tab in the Font group.

6. Change Fonts
To change the font type
a) Highlight the text you want to change
b) Click on the font name from the format bar or you can change it to Bold (B)
and Italics (I).
c) You can select the font name and size from the format bar.

7. Create bullets and numbering


To create bullets and numbering
a) Highlight the text you want to give bullet or number
b) Go to the Paragraph tab on the ribbon
c) Click on the bullet arrow to choose the bullet type or numbering arrow to
choose the number type.

8. Insert header and footer to the document


To insert header and footer
a) Go to Insert tab> Header or Footer.
b) Choose from a list of standard headers or footers,
c) go to the list of Header or Footer options, and select the header or footer
that you want
d) Or, create your own header or footer by selecting Edit Header or Edit Footer.

e) Select Close Header and Footer or press Esc to exit.


f) To eliminate a header (like deleting it on the title page) select it and then
check the Different First Page box.
g) To delete header and footer, select Insert > Header (or Footer) > Remove
Header (or Remove Footer).

9. Insert page number


To insert page number
a) Go to Insert tab> Page Number.
b) Choose the location and style you want.
c) If you don’t want a page number to appear on the first page, select Different
First Page.
d) If you want numbering to start with 1 on the second page,
e) Go to the Page Number> Format page numbers, and set Start at to 0

10. Add page break


To add page break
a) Go to Insert tab> Page Layout.
b) Click Breaks.
c) Choose the types of Page Breaks.
d) A page break can also be created by holding down the Control key, then
pressing Enter.
