Hi, everyone!

I In today’s blog I want to tell you about our last school trip. I went to a local forest with some of my
classmates. The purpose of the trip was to learn about endangered species in the UK. I found out more than I
had expected, and I even saw a turtle dove, which is unfortunately disappearing from the country.

During the trip, we actually stayed in the forest, which is about fifty kilometres away. The accommodation was
better than I had expected – we stayed in modern cabins. But, the minivan that took us there was not
satisfactory at all. It was old and stuffy, with no air conditioning.

The biggest advantage of the trip was spending so much time outdoors. We were walking in the forest every
day, observing nature.

Even though the trip was enjoyable, there were some problems. Firstly, we had to prepare our own food,
which wasn’t at all enjoyable. Secondly, the minivan that took us there was not satisfactory at all. It was old
and stuffy, with no air conditioning.

Have you ever been on a similar trip?

Hi, Colin,

Thank you for your last email. Guess what! Last week our school organised a science exhibition. The main focus
of the exhibition was how to improve indoor air quality. My class decided to prepare a presentation about
chemicals that we might unintentionally inhale. We studied the ingredients of paints, candles and cleaning

products, and prepared a list of the most harmful ones. It appears that some of them can cause serious health
problems such as fatigue and allergies.

The exhibition was very interesting. The part I enjoyed most was the display of air-purifying plants prepared by
class 2C. It is amazing to see how we can clean the air and make our flats prettier at the same time. It was also
inspiring to see what other students are interested in.

Would you like to see our exhibition during your visit next week? It is on until the end of the month. Let me
know what you think.

Take care!

Exercise 3

Some educators claim that students should acquire basic office skills before graduating from high school. While
it is true to say that such a solution could help them in their career development, it cannot be denied that it
would also mean more studying during the academic year when teenagers should be focusing on examination
results.

On the one hand, it is believed that learning office skills can help in the search for a good job. To begin with,
employers appreciate the fact that new employees do not need to be trained in using a copying machine or
preparing a presentation in PowerPoint. Therefore, gaining those skills might give students an advantage on
the job market. Office skills can also be applied in volunteer work or university education, so gaining them is a
part of lifelong learning.

On the other hand, adding more subjects to an already overloaded high school curriculum might distract
students from revising for their school-leaving exams. Firstly, high school students are already overworked and,
if anything, need more leisure time rather than more subjects to study. Secondly, most schools are not well
equipped to teach basic office skills to every individual student.

On balance, it is true to say that basic office skills are needed on the job market and in other fields, but focusing
on them may also negatively affect the final examination results. Yet, education is never a one-size-fits-all
proposition. Ideally, students should be able to choose those subjects which suit their needs and interests.

1 Some people maintain that what reduces crime is not the punishment, but access to education and decent
living conditions.

2 What is more, teachers can underline the importance of morality to the pupils and teach them about
responsibility, self-respect and the difference between right and wrong.

3 However, school is not only about showing proper patterns of behaviour to children. It is also a place where
they have easy access to specialists who can support them in difficult situations.

4 However, I am convinced that education is an effective way to reduce crime and combat adversity.
