Tutorial 1

The document contains 6 questions about vector analysis and vector fields. It asks to find components of vectors, the direction of vectors, the volume of a parallelepiped formed by vectors, and the angle between intersecting planes formed by vectors. It also asks to find the sum of two vectors evaluated at different points.

Exercise Sheet # 1: Vector Analysis

Q1- A vector field is specified as G = 24xyax + 12(x2 + 2)ay + 18z2az. Given two points, P(1, 2, −1) and
Q(−2, 1, 3), find:
a) G at P.
b) a unit vector in the direction of G at Q
c) a unit vector directed from Q toward P
d) the equation of the surface on which |G| = 60.

Q2- Calculate the volume of a parallelepiped formed by vectors A, B, and C such that A = 2ax + ay - 2az,
B= -ax + 3ay + 5az, and C= 5ax - 2ay - 2az.

Q3- Find the unit vector which is:

a) in the direction of vector E at P(2, 3, -4) if
𝑥 𝑦 𝑧
𝑬 = (𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 𝑧 2 ) [ 𝒂𝒙 + 𝒂𝒚 + 𝒂𝒛 ]
√𝑦 2 + 𝑧 2 √𝑥 2 + 𝑧 2 √𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2
b) perpendicular to the plane passing through M(1,-5,5), N(-2,4,0), and Q(2,3,4), and having a
positive x component

Q4- Given the vectors A=-2ax+ay-2az, B=ax-3ay+az. Find:

a) the cylindrical components of A and B.
b) the spherical components of A and B.
Show that the product A.B and A×B are independent of the choice of coordinate system.

Q5- Given the following vectors:

A= ax + ay + az B= 2ax - ay +3az
C= 3ax +2ay + az D= 4ax -2 ay
Find the angle between the intersection of the plane of A and B, and the plane of C and D.

Q6- If A=3a + 2a + 5az and B= -2a + 3a - az are given at points P(3, π/6, 5) and Q(4, π/3, 3), find
C=A+B at point S(2,π/4,4).
