HYDERABAD CAMPUS
Second Semester 2023-2024
MATH F112 (Mathematics-II)
Tutorial Sheet-11
Topics: Cauchy-Riemann Equations

1. Show that if f (z) = u + iv satisfies the Cauchy-Riemann equations, then f 2 (z) also satisfies the same.

2. Use Cauchy-Riemann (CR) equations to show that the following functions are nowhere differentiable.
(a) f (z) = z − z̄
(b) f (z) = ex e−iy .

3. Determine where f (z) exists and find its value when

(a) f (z) = x2 + iy 2
(b) f (z) = z Im(z).
4. Derive the polar form of the Cauchy Riemann equations from the Cartesian form.

5. Use polar form of Cauchy-Riemann (CR) equations to find f (z) where :
√ iθ
(a) f (z) = re 2 , (r > 0, α < θ < α + 2π)
(b) f (z) = e−θ cos(lnr) + ie−iθ sin(lnr), (r > 0, 0 < θ < 2π)
6. Find the set of points at which the given function is differentiable :

f (z) = 2x2 + y + i(y 2 − x).

7. Find real constants a and b so that the given function is differentiable everywhere:

f (z) = 3x − y + 5 + i(ax + by − 3).

8. Show that the function f (z) = |z̄ 2 − z 2 | satisfies the CR equations at the origin, but is not differentiable.
Explain.

9. Define the operator ∂ z̄ = 12 ( ∂x
∂ ∂
+ i ∂y ). Show that a function f satisfies CR equations if and only if ∂ z̄ = 0.
