2 Module content
• The module will develop in detailed quality management rules and practices applicable to Marine
Operations Management onboard and ashore.
• Focus will be provided to the Rules, Regulations and prevailing Industry Standards towards
continual improvement and the Risk Management.
• Particular and detailed analysis on the elements of a successful management and the
importance of Marine Assurance resulting in the economic growth of an organisation will be
provided.
• The concentration in performance monitoring during all the regimes of Port State Control
Inspections, Flag State Inspections, Vetting Inspections and Rightship rating system together
with periodical Management Reviews by industry stake holders such as Oil Major Companies
(TMSA), will assist students to easily understand the value of Internal and External Audits and
the importance of managers input, during periodical Management Reviews in achieving
organisation’s goals.
• Emphasis will be placed upon practical elements of operational best practices, welfare of
personnel, the assets efficient management, and Crisis Management, utilizing an interactive
learning environment.

3 Learning materials
BCA has a fully- equipped library, with over 3,000 titles in the programmes offered. The BCA library’s
catalogue is available online on BCA’s ilearn on the following web address

The library in order to facilitate users’ access to material located in other libraries provides
assistance through the searching process. Users can make requests for learning material (usually
journal articles) with the help of librarians by filling a form available on the National Documentation
Centre of Greece’s website.
BCA’s Library is open from 09.00 to 21.00 during the weekdays and from 10.00 to 16.00 on certain
Saturdays. The library also provides access to self-service print/copy/scan facilities.
BCA has also created “The Student Academic Support Services Department” to offer additional
support to its students. The specialised staff of this department, respecting each student’s learning
needs and style, helps students develop tools and strategies to make their learning process and
later their working life more efficient, organised and successful. Students are advised to book an

4 Maintaining Academic Honesty and Integrity
Academic Integrity means avoiding plagiarism and cheating and owning your own work, the use of
essay mills and AI content is also considered academic misconduct. This is when you submit a piece
of work which is not completely your own, but which you are presenting as your own without
acknowledging the author or properly referencing the original source. All your work must
demonstrate Academic Integrity; it must be an honest and fair submission, complying with all the
requirements of the assessment. Failure to meet these standards of behaviour and practice is
academic misconduct, which can result in penalties being applied under the Academic Offences
Regulations.
BCA students can contact the BCA Academic Support Services Team, which offers One-to-One
Academic Support opportunities and Academic Skills Workshops throughout the year, helping you
to develop skills relevant to your degree. Workshops include for instance Essay Planning and
Writing; Critical Thinking; Reflective Writing; Group Work and Presentation Skills. Maths Support

5 Meeting Deadlines
You should always try your best to submit your work on time. You can submit coursework up to 10
calendar days late without penalty if you request an extension (email [email protected])
before the submission deadline. Without an extension, the maximum mark you will be able to get
for that work will be the pass mark.
6 Getting Support
There may be times when you experience circumstances outside of your control and talking to your
Module Leader and other support services available to you in the university will help keep you on
track with your studies. You can access information on support services and further guidance at our
Support page on ilearn.
If your circumstances mean that you are not able to submit at all or are unable to attend an in-person
assessment like an exam or in-class test, then you can request mitigation for the assessment.
Approved mitigation means that you can have another attempt without penalty if you fail an
assessment or do not submit. In order to request mitigation, please contact your Course
Administrator.
If you request an extension or mitigation before the deadline you can choose to self-certify, without
providing evidence, so long as you have a valid reason. You can only self-certify three assessments
per academic year. If you have used all your self-certification opportunities, or requested mitigation
after the deadline, you will need to provide evidence of your exceptional circumstances for your
request to be granted.

7 Preparing for your Assessment
A key part of your learning will be preparation for your summative assessment. You will be
provided feedback on your formative assessments, and this will help you to better understand
what is required of you when you submit your summative assessment. Please see below guidance
on your formative assessment and how to access your feedback.
It is expected that throughout the semester, and before deadlines for summative assessments, you
will participate in a number of formative assessments. These will take the form of case studies,
practical scenarios, in-class exercises, and plans/drafts of written work. These assessments are
aimed at helping you build your assignments and prepare you for your final exam (e.g. mock exam).
For most of these assessments, you will get feedback in-class, either in group discussions, or in
one-on-one sessions.
8 Summative Assessments

• To provide students the knowledge level on the basic HSQE related aspects in Shipping.
• To assist students to understand the fundamentals of applicable best practice standards in the
Maritime Industry and their importance in managing a technical or business function.
• To Provide students with the Regulatory Framework for the Safe Management of Marine
Operations with emphasis on Environmental aspects and impacts.
• To critically assess the significance of Quality and Safety Management in strategic and financial
growth of a Shipping Company.
In line with the above, the students, have to make an individual oral presentation (ca. 20 minutes)
supported by a written bibliography of sources (max. 15 slides) on the topic of the A2 coursework,
in which they will present how they intend to structure their A2 coursework based on the information
they have collected, thus, addressing the following outcomes.

In line with the above, each student is supposed to be a free-lancer consultant that a ship
management company employed to investigate the reasons for its constantly lowering performance
over the last three year period. The company operates a fleet of ten tankers and ten bulk carriers,
holding all industry standards certification (ISOs, etc).

All vessels are aged from eight to fifteen years, and they always were under present management.
There is an increased number of complaints by the company customers on its performance, as the
shore employees and crew retention rates have been dramatically reduced.
Two recent accidents (a collision of one of its tankers with a barge while entering a port under
pilotage and a grounding of one of its bulk carriers while transiting the Amazon River) have been
placed the company on target for PSC inspections and oil majors’ scrutiny.
When the investigation is completed, the student must present to the company, not only his/ her
findings, but also prepare a report with his/ her proposal on the remedial actions necessary for the
company to implement in order to improve their performance and regain a good reputation in the
industry, thus, addressing the following outcomes.
