Sew Movidrive B
Sew Movidrive B
General information
The MOVIDRIVE is so popular because it can operate any type of AC motor.
It can run standard Asynchronous motors as Induction motors (AKA squirrel cage motors) in
open and closed loop. And Synchronous motors as permanent magnet motors (AKA servo
motors) that have encoder feedback.
MOVIDRIVE B capabilities
Like a simple VFD the MOVIDRIVE can do simple speed control, it can control the motor
torque directly for application like winders that need a specific constant torque to operate
properly, it can do positioning and it does it very well, it can even be connected to other
MOVIDRIVEs for master and slave positioning which it called synchronous control, it can be
operated in open and closed loop control, it can be commissioned to work in all the different
control modes as V/f (voltage frequency), VFC (voltage flux control), CFC (current flux control)
and finally it has a built-in programming language it called IPOS plus that opens the ability for
countless types of customizations.
IPOS plus programming
One of the highly desired capabilities of the MOVIDRIVE is the IPOS programming.
The IPOS feature is very powerful and, in some cases, it eliminates the need for a lower-level
PLC control.
Once the code is compiled and downloaded to the drive it's not possible to extract the pre-
compiled code from it. If someone connects to the MOVIDRIVE without a copy of the code all
they can view is the assembly language version of it and they can't make any edits to it, having
a copy of the code on hand will make troubleshooting much easier if problems happen later on
and it's the only way to make edits without starting from scratch again so those code files are
extremely important.
Application Modules
SEW delivers custom programs for different applications. These application modules act as a
bridge between the standard MOVIDRIVE parameters and a custom IPOS program. And they
are well documented.
Operating temperatures
The MOVIDRIVE is designed to work in temperatures ranging from 0°C to 40°C. For storage
the limits are a little wider ranging from -25°C to 70°C. The really important thing with storage is
to make sure it remains dry and condensation isn't happening on the drive. These MOVIDRIVE
drives are only rated for IP20 so it can be damaged if it comes in contact even with small
amounts of moisture.
Another note about storage is that SEW recommends for any long-term storage that the spare
MOVIDRIVE is powered with its rated line voltage for five minutes every two years. The drive
has capacitors that can degrade if they don't see any voltage for extended periods.
If a drive needed to be operated after over two years of storage it required to bring up the
voltage slowly with a variable power supply over a one-hour procedure that's shown in the
SEW manual. If voltage isn't brought up slowly the inrush of peak voltage could cause
capacitor failure.
MOVIDRIVE B Sizes
The MOVIDRIVE B comes in eight sizes. For reference size 0 at the top of the image is
about the size of a textbook and size 7 on the far left is about the size of an ATM. Each
of these is multiple different variants also within each frame size there can be two or
more different kilowatt ratings.
The MOVIDRIVE B does support 230 volts in some of its sizes but it doesn't have any
options for single phase voltage like it can be found in a residential environment so
these voltage ratings are only for three phases.
MOVIDRIVE B Size 0
There are four variants of size 0 and this is because each size has two different versions
for size 0 there are 0S (Size 0 small) and 0M (Size 0 medium). And these are the lowest
output power that MOVIDRIVE B can offer.
Within those two versions there is this version that doesn't have any expansion slots.
This option is the MDX60B and it can only be open loop control because they have no
ability for an encoder option card since they don't have any expansion slots that means
they can't have built-in field bus options or expanded inputs and output options.
The other version available in this size is the MDX61B. It does have expansion slots
so, these can have encoder feedback and other options as well because these are the
smallest MOVIDRIVE B available. They only have two expansion slots and the rest of
the MOVIDRIVE B, all have three expansion slots.
Note:
The option cards in the MOVIDRIVE B smaller size install differently than the other sizes
due to their size.
MOVIDRIVE B Size 2
The size 2 has multiple variants like size 0. The size 2 and 2S have the same capabilities
but this is only a dimensional difference because the size 2S supports less kilowatts
ratings than the size 2.
MOVIDRIVE B Size 0
The picture below summarizes power and voltage rating for the size0.
MOVIDRIVE B Size 1
MOVIDRIVE B size 1 has the most power options and it's the smallest option that
supports 230 volts. This size is used on demo units because it's the smallest size that
supports three expansion slots.
Note:
The size 4 is the last size that supports 230 volts.
MOVIDRIVE B Nomenclature
MOVIDRIVE B hardware
The MOVIDRIVE B often operated on 460 volts and because of its half wave input
rectifier the DC bus level is steady around 700 VDC and can reach 1000 volts during
regenerative operation.
As a warning never power on the MOVIDRIVE without the module installed this was
more of a problem in the older MOVIDRIVE B. For example, if an older MOVIDRIVE is
accidentally powered without the module once the module is installed the data on it could
be scrambled which corrupts the parameter file and makes it unusable the only way to
recover the parameters after that is to have a pre-existing backup on a keypad or
computer.
If the parameters have never been backed up then the MOVIDRIVE would need to be
commissioned from scratch to get it operating again this could be difficult especially if a
custom IPOS program or application module is being used.
In 2018 SEW had to make a circuit change to memory modules so any new MOVIDRIVE
will have a black dot underneath the stop text and this dot represents the new version
memory circuit board.
The reason this matter is because of compatibility, an old memory module that doesn't
have the black dot is compatible with any version of MOVIDRIVE firmware, even the
newest firmware.
The new module that has the black dot will not work in an older MOVIDRIVE with older
firmware, it only works in firmware version 22 or higher.
For example, if an old MOVIDRIVE needs to be replaced and it is replaced with a new
MOVIDRIVE, the old memory module can be transferred to the new MOVIDRIVE and it
will work fine.
The opposite of the previous example is not allowed. The only way to get the old
MOVIDRIVE to work is to use the keypad or a computer to transfer the parameters.
If a firmware update needs to be performed SEW offers free software available on their
website that can do that.
MOVIDRIVE B connectors
The reason there is access to the DC link is for troubleshooting and for external
components such as regenerative energy storage and some motor brake controllers are
only powered by high voltage DC instead of using the AC line voltage.
The brake resistor operates from the DC link supply so the voltage at the DC link will be
the same at the brake resistor terminals.
The STO stands for safe torque off, from the factory it comes with 24VDC jumper wires.
It is recommended to remove these jumpers and feed it from a functional safety
controller.
The purpose of the STO circuit is to immobilize the motor from turning and it does that by
removing the control voltage from the output transistors.
If the STO circuit is tripped the MOVIDRIVE will display a capital letter U indicating that a
controller is operating the MOVIDRIVE and the motor isn't turning and letter U occurs on
the seven-segment display, that means the STO is tripped and the safety circuit needs to
be reset like pressing a safety acknowledgement button if the machine is safe to operate.
In variants that have expansion slots the motor encoder card always installs in the lower
left slot for closed loop control.
The slot above it is where a field bus option card would be installed if the drive needs to
be connected to a controller.
On the size 0 of MOVIDRIVE B there are only two expansion slots so this is the max it
can be expanded to. On size 1 and up there is a third slot which is much taller which is
used for feature expansions like master slave option cards, external encoders, additional
inputs and outputs, etc.
All MOVIDRIVE B have a seven-segment display that shows what operating condition
the servo-drive, this is also the location where the faults will flash if they occur.
The DIP switches change the RS485 communication speed which is called the baud rate
and it also configures the analog input to be a voltage signal or a current signal.
No matter what power rating MOVIDRIVE B you're working with the front panel will be
identical except the amount of expansion slots.
And these terminals are eight digital inputs, four digital outputs, one analog input that can
be voltage or current based, one temperature sensor input from the motor stator, one
programmable low voltage relay that switches depending on the parameter setting and
one brake control signal that connects to an external brake controller to guarantee the
brake timing accuracy.
One of these digital inputs is named DI00, it is permanently assigned to controller inhibit
this prevents the drive from enabling like the STO circuit but it operates on a different
control principle.
If a number 1 occurs on the seven-segment display this means the inhibit terminal
doesn't have voltage and it's keeping the drive from enabling whether the use of a
fieldbus to control the drive or just the inputs terminals.
The SBus terminal block stands for the system bus, it is a CAN based protocol that gives
the ability of communication between multiple drives.
Another important DIP switch is the SBus terminating resistor. This switch must be
switched if a connection to other drives or to external fieldbus cards is available.
The rule for the termination is that the first and last device in the SBus network needs to
have the resistor switched on and all the devices in the middle will have their resistors
switched off.
MOVIDRIVE B miscellaneous
The USB11A which has been out for many years and only supports the RS485 protocol
is actually being discontinued in 2021and it is being replaced by the USM21A which
includes RS485.
This new adapter gives the ability to communicate with almost every electronic product
that SEW made ranging from the old MOVIDRIVE A to the newest MOVIDRIVE C.
Another common accessory is the DBG60 keypad, it allows users to see full text
descriptions of fault codes and view, modify and backup the drive parameters.
SEW VFD control modes
V/f (V/Hz) mode for open-loop only
VFC (Volt Flux Control) for open-loop and closed-loop
CFC (Current Flux Control) for closed-loop only
Note:
V/f and VFC control modes work with third-party motors, CFC control mode works only
with SEW motors.
The blinking decimal light in the bottom right corner of the seven-segment, means that
an IPOS program is loaded to the servo-drive and the processor is cycling through the
commands. this IPOS code could be custom or it could be an application module.
MOVIDRIVE B options and accessories
Power accessories
The SEW resolver behave like a single turn absolute encoder, because it can't store how
many rotations it has went around, but it does know the current degree of rotation.
MOVI-PLC models
the model DHP11B is now discontinued, the only way to access the program in this
version is to use the serial port at the bottom of the card with USB11A cable.
The other models all have a dedicated engineering port that can be connected to a pc
with a standard ethernet cable.
The difference between the 21B version and the 41B version is the number of axes it can
support:
The 21B cards can support a max of 8 interpolated with 8 non-interpolated axes
bringing the total to 16 axes
The 41B cards can support a max of 16 interpolated with 16 non-interpolated axes
bringing the total to 32 axes
