Background culture notes

Queenstown is a resort town in the south-west of New Zealand’s South Island. It is built around Queenstown
Bay on the banks of Lake Wakatipu. The lake is 80 km long and covers an area of 291 km2, which makes it the
third largest lake in the country. Queenstown is in an area of natural beauty and it also has spectacular views of
the nearby mountain range called The Remarkables. The resident population of the town is just under 30,000,
but thousands of tourists visit each year because Queenstown is a centre for adventure and ski tourism. Popular
activities include: jet boating, white-water rafting, bungee jumping, mountain biking, hiking (known in New
Zealand as ‘tramping’) and fly fishing. It is also a major centre for snow sports with many people travelling from
all over the world to ski at the four main mountain ski fields.
The Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge is famous for bungee jumping, which started to become a popular
adventure activity in the 1970s in England. The bridge was completed in late 1880, and it hangs 43 m above the
Kawarau River. The first bungee jump took place here in 1988, when two New Zealanders, A. J. Hackett and Henry
van Asch, jumped off the bridge.

Extension
Stage 1: Preparation before the class
• Ask: What popular resorts for extreme sports do you know about? Write the answers on the board.
• Ask: What sports can you do there? Make a list of extreme sports on the board.
• Tell students they are going to make an advert about a popular extreme sports resort. Ask them to choose a
resort and research information about it on the internet. Tell them to bring a picture of the resort and some
information about it to the next class.
Stage 2: Procedure in the class
• Divide students into small groups of three of four. Ask them to move their desks together, if possible.
• Ask students to take out their research about a popular resort for extreme sports.
• Elicit questions for asking about the resorts. Write the questions on the board.
• Number the students from one to three or four in each group.
• Explain that they are going to ask Student 1 questions about the place they researched. Then, continue with
Students 2, 3 and 4.
• Explain that the group must now choose one of the places they have researched.
• Ask them to brainstorm the main attractions of the resort. They should write down ten reasons why they think
people should go to this place.
• Tell them that they are going to write a short advert to advertise their resort. Go through the useful expressions
with them.
• Ask the students to decide what each student in the group is going to say. Tell them to use the useful
expressions in the box to help them.
• Tell them to think of a slogan for their resort. Explain that a slogan is a short phrase that summarizes the main
attraction of the thing you are advertising. It is usually very easy to remember.
• Ask each group in turn to present their advert to the class. Finally, have a class vote on the best advert.
Extra ideas
Try searching for information about extreme sports resorts on sites such as Trip Advisor. Or you can do an internet
search for ‘extreme sports’ or ‘adventure holidays’.

Unit 2 DVD scripts Queenstown, New Zealand
The extreme sports capital of the world is Queenstown in New Zealand.
It’s the ultimate destination for tourists who come looking for dangerous, but exciting challenges, such as paragliding,
skydiving, and the world-famous bungee jump.
Queenstown is a small town situated in the beautiful south-western corner of New Zealand’s South Island.
This natural beauty is why Queenstown is now the adventure capital of the world.
Queenstown lies on the edges of the beautiful Lake Wakatipu with views of stunning mountains in The Remarkables
range.
In the nineteeth century, a lot of people came here because they were looking for a new life. Some of these new
settlers found gold while they were farming, and suddenly the town was at the centre of a gold rush.
The gold eventually ran out, but people continued to come to the area. A lot of these visitors found new tracks and
paths when they were exploring and the area became famous for ‘tramping’.
In the 1950s, the first winter ski resorts opened and Queenstown became a year-round tourist destination.
The Shotover River that runs into Lake Wakatipu provided the first opportunity for an adventure attraction. Nearly
twenty years before the first bungee jump in 1970, the Shotover Jet was taking visitors on the heart-stopping ride
through the deep canyons near Queenstown. Over two million fearless passengers have already experienced the ride
of their lives here.
Queenstown is also famous for its bungee jump off the Kawarau Bridge. The first bungee jump here was in 1988 and
the bridge is still one of the most popular bungee jumps in the world, attracting over 300,000 jumpers a year.
People usually jump on their own, but sometimes they jump together. As these girls were jumping, their friends took
lots of photos.
Queenstown still retains its links with the past. There are peaceful steam boat trips across the lake, and the historic
Milford and Routeburn walking tracks attract thousands of visitors every year. But, the town continues to grow and
develop its tourist industry.
With a growing number of top-quality hotels and restaurants, and new and modern experiences on offer, it’s a town
that’s got something for everyone, whether you are planning to jump out of a plane or simply relax and enjoy the
fantastic views.
