Introduction to Distribution System

• The distribution system is a largest portion of network in electrical

power system. It can be defined as the part of power system this
distributes power to various customers in ready-to-use form at
their place of consumption. Hence, utilities have to ensure
reliable and efficient cost effective service, while providing
service voltages and power quality within the specified range. This
is a very challenging task. Utilities, traditionally determine future
system developments based on a top down approach, all over the
world are competing for improvement in service to consumers.
Mostly the power utilities emphasize on power generation and
transmission system to reduce the overall cost of the system.

Type of Distribution System

• Overhead Facilities
• Underground Facilities
What is the difference between the overhead transmission
line and underground transmission line?
Type of Distribution System

• Underground Facilities

I. Advantages and Disadvantages of UG Distribution

II. Underground Equipment
I. Advantages of UG Distribution

• Congestion of overhead facilities

• Appearance (aesthetics)
• Safety
• Reliability
Other Reasons for Adopting UG Distribution

• ROW constraints
• Government regulations
• Customer requirement
I. Disadvantages of UG Distribution

• Costs more than the traditional OH system

• Needs highly skilled work force
• Requires longer time to install and maintain
• Live-line work not possible
• Cannot tolerate flooding
