Recall the arithmetic statement 2 + 3 = 5. There are times, however, when expressions have
missing terms which are usually represented by a blank _____ or simply by x or y, like

____ + _____ = 7 x+y=7

In the second expression, x and y may take values from the set of integers that make the
statement true.
For example:
5+ 0 = 5 4+1=5 -1 + 6 = 5

There is an infinite number of values that can take the places of x and y. These letters are called
variables and the number 5, which remains unchanged, is called constant.

C Presenting examples/Instances of An algebraic expression is one or more Algebraic terms used to express concept. The basic
the new lesson building blocks of an algebraic expression are variable and constant and operating symbols such
as plus, minus signs.

Examples:
4 x 2+ 3 y+ 6 xy+ 3 is an algebraic expression.

Algebraic expression are just a set of variables and constant that are separated by plus or minus
signs.

D Discussing new concepts and What is a constant?

practicing new skills # 1
Constant is that part of the algebraic expression that involve only numbers. We call them a
constant because the value is always the same. It is definite. There are no variables in the term
that can change the value of the constant.
Example:

Identify the constant of each of the following:

1. 8a

Solution:
The number 8 before an alphabet(variable) is a constant.
2. in the formulas y = 3x

Solution:
2 is the constant.

E Discussing new concepts and What are variables?

practicing new skills # 2 In algebraic expression, the letter represent variable. They are not constant; the value of the term
can be changed from time to time.
Variable is a symbol which takes various numerical value. It is also the combination of constant
and variables.

Examples:

Identify the variable of each of the following

1. 3rd

Solution:

r and d are the variables.

2. 4 x 2+ 3 y+ 2

Solution:

x and y are the variables

3. if x is variable and 3 is a constant, then 3 + x, 3 – x, 3/x, x/3, etc. are also variable because the
combination of a constant and variable are always a variable.

F Developing mastery Identify the constant and variable of each of the following:

1. 2a
2. – 8mn
3. x + 3
4. 6/x
5. y = 3x
6.7 x 2+ ¿ 5y + 1
7. 3x + 5y = 4

Answers:
1. 2 is a constant and a is a variable.
2. – 8 is a constant and m and n are variables.
3. 3 is a constant and x is a variable.
4. 6 is a constant and x is a variable.
5. 3 is a constant and x and y are variables.
6. 7, 5 and 1 are constants and x and y are variables.
7. 4 is a constant and x and y are variables

Master Teacher II Head Teacher I Principal
I’m Helmie G.Sanayatin, a teacher in mathematics at Osias High
School, Kabacan Cotabato, is a good day for everyone.
For today, I’ll be your teacher to explore the difference between constants and variables of the algebraic expression
given.
Recall the statement in arithmetic 2 + 3 = 5. However, there are terms where there are missing normally
described by a blank ____, a circle, a box, or only x and y, like

___ + ____ = 5 or x + y = 5.

So, what are the possible values of x and y in the second expression x + y = 5 that make up the result of 5? The x and y
values can be taken from the set of integer values that make the statement valid.
For example,
1+ 4 = 5
3+2 = 5
5+0=5

There is an infinite number of values which can take place of x and y. such letters are called variables, and is called
constant the number 5 which remains unchanged.
An algebraic expression is one or more words used to describe definition in algebraic form. Constant and variable and
working symbols like plus, minus signs are the basic building blocks of an algebraic language. Some examples of
algebraic expressions are:

5, 3x, 4y + 4, 2 x 2+ 3 y+ 2

Algebraic expressions are merely are series of variables and constants, separated by signs plus or minus.

What are constants?

Constant is that part of algebraic expression which only involves numbers. We call them constant, because they always
have the same value. Definitely. Constant can be any number type (for example, not a mere integer or fraction).
