Why Try?

(Rom. 15:14-24, 30-32)

What difference can 1 person make?

In just 300 years, a handful of Christian disciples transformed the Roman Empire!

Throughout scripture there are examples of one person who made a difference, from
Abraham to Paul.

Under-educated, under-funded and under-estimated, William Carey seemed to have

everything against him. He was brought up in abject poverty and never had the benefit of
high school. Carey’s formal education ended in junior school. Yet, at age 12 Carey taught
himself Latin. Then he went on to master – on his own – Greek, Hebrew, French and
Dutch! He became professor of Bengali, Sanskrit and Marathi at the prestigious Fort
William College in Calcutta (where the civil servants were trained). Carey and his co-
workers started over 100 Christian schools for over 8 000 Indian children of all castes
and he launched the first Christian College in Asia at Serampore, which continues to this
day! Carey finally succeeded in translating the Bible into 6 languages and New
Testaments and Gospels into 29 other languages!

The recently deceased Rosa Parks was one person who made a difference in American
Civil Rights.

Here locally, the race for Mayor in Mount Olive was decided by one vote a few years
back and this year one of the town council races ended in a tie.

“I am only one, but still, I am one. I cannot do everything but I can do something. And,
because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do what I can.” - Edward Everett
Hale, American clergyman and writer (1822-1909)

“The question for each man to settle is not what he would do if he had the means, time,
influence and educational advantages, but what he will do with the things he has.” -
Hamilton Wright Mabee

"I shall pass through this world but once. Any good that I can do, or any kindness that I
can show to any human being, let me do it now and not delay it. For I shall not pass this
way again." - Stephen Grellet was a French-born Quaker Leader

“I long to accomplish some great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish
small tasks as if they were great and noble.” - Helen Keller, American social activist,
public speaker and author (1880-1968)

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an
honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a
life around.-Leo Buscaglia
"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." - Aesop, 6th Century B.C.

Jesus himself said that those who believe in Him will do even greater works than He did
(John14:12)

What we can help accomplish does not ultimately depend upon our own knowledge,
strength, skills or ability.

Its about letting an all-powerful God work through us, despite our own
limitations.

Paul did not neglect the “Strong Christians” in Roman (Rom. 15:14-16).

The Roman Church had been in existence for at least a decade at the time of this letter.

We have to be careful not to neglect those among us who appear to be strong and mature
Christians. The truth is, we are all probably just one step away from the precipice. Even
the seemingly strong need time, attention, love and encouragement.

Even the “strong” need exhortation (advice, warning, inspiration) at times. (Heb 3:13 &
13:22; 1 Pe. 5:1)

They also occasionally need to be admonished

Those who are doing good works can be encouraged to do even greater works through
the power of God’s Holy Spirit.

We can/should boast in Christ.

Though we ought not boast of our own accord, we can/should boast about the wonders
accomplished by God, by Jesus, and through God’s Holy Spirit (Ps. 34:2; 44:8; Rom.
15:17-18).

We should all help bring the “Good News” of salvation through Jesus to those places
where it has not been shared (Matthew 28:19-20; Rom. 10:14-18)

Why?

Love for others.

Obedience to God

Hasten Christ’s return? (Matt. 24:14)

Evangelism is an essential mission for God’s people. The word “evangelism” is derived
from the Greek word euaggelion, meaning “gospel” or “good news.” The verbal forms of
euaggelizesthai, meaning “to bring” or “to announce good news” occur some fifty-five
times in the New Testament.

We will never be alone in this because Jesus promised that He will be with the church
until “the end of the world.” (Matt. 28:20)

We need to pray for each other

“Prayer support” is crucial to the success of any ministry.

We need to pray for the protection of our missionaries and for the success of their
ministries.

Such prayer should not be “casual” (Rom. 15:30-32)

We are assured that the effectual, fervent/earnest/ardent/persistent/zealous

(energeo, Gk.) prayer of a righteous man availeth much (1 Chron. 16:11; Zech.
8:20-21; Ps. 55:16-17; Isa. 62:6-7; Luke 11:9-13; 18:1-7; 1 Thes. 5:17; Col 4:12,
James 5:16-18) (Prayer that is continuous, unfailing, with serious intent and
determination).
