9. Date of commencement of the Project: 11/09/2023

10. Probable date of completion of the project: 3/05/2024

11. Scope / Objectives of the project:

The studies have chosen the following objectives.
 To learn the suitability of ERT to assess the spatial and temporal distribution of soil
moisture.

 To investigate the application of the electrical resistivity method to soil salinity &
organic matter level.

12. Methodology:
In order to achieve these objectives, the study is being conducted at our campus
Vivekananda College of Engineering & Technology Puttur, D.K. The selected study area
was a barren hillock with a very steep slope, where the top soil was eroded and the
substratum was exposed. The soil is lateritic, characterised by very low water holding
capacity and texturally, the soil is sandy clay loam.
Soil investigation studies are commonly performed to determine the properties of the soil
that involves topsoil and subsoil exploration such as physical mapping, and laboratory tests

KSCST: Student Project Programme: 47th series: 2023-2024 2

are usually performed to make subsoil investigation. Hence, this study performed a field
electrical resistivity method (ERM) using Aqua meter CRM 500 by Wenner four-probe
method.
In the Wenner four-probe method (Figure 1), the system consists of four probes which are
equally spaced (a) from each other to measure apparent soil ER. The outer probes (C1 and
C2) are used as the current source (I) for current injection to the soil and the inner probes (P1
and P2) are used as the voltage source to measure voltage difference (V) between the inner
probes . Wenner resistance (RW) between inner probes is calculated by dividing voltage by
current. A Wenner configuration is shown in Figure 1. The apparent soil ER (ρE) with this
configuration is calculated by Equation : 𝜌𝐸 = 2∗𝜋∗𝑎∗𝑅𝑊

Figure 1. The Wenner Four-probe

configuration.

13. Expected Outcome of the project:

 We will obtain soil moisture data in our work, which will be useful for
projecting agricultural production, early drought warning,
groundwater table, and irrigation scheduling.
