QUESTION 1: MOTION, POWER AND ENERGY

1.1 Define the term acceleration. (1)

1.2 A truck with a mass of 5 ton is accelerated uniformly from 6 m/s to 15 m/s over
a distance of 600 m up an incline of 1:4. The resistance against the motion is
320 N.

Determine the following:

1.2.1 The gravitational component parallel to the plane (3)


1.2.2 The acceleration (3)

1.2.3 The unbalanced force (2)

1.2.4 The total force on the truck (2)

1.3 A flat belt has a speed of 12 m/s. The tension in the tight side is 640 N and the
tension ratio is 6:1.

Calculate the following:

1.3.1 The tension in the slack side (1)

1.3.2 The effective tensile force (1)

1.3.3 The power transmitted (2)

3.1 State the triangle of forces. (1)

3.2 If a force is applied to an object, it may have some effects. Name TWO effects. (2)

3.3 Calculate the magnitude of the forces in the ropes P and Q, as shown in
FIGURE 2 below, if the system is in the state of equilibrium.

QUESTION 4: FRICTION

4.1 Name TWO disadvantages and TWO advantages of friction. (4)

4.2 During an experiment on an adjustable incline plane, a block weighing


2,65 kN was placed on the plane. The incline is at an angle of 30° to the


horizontal.

If the frictional force is 0,325 kN, determine the following:

4.2.1 The weight component of the block perpendicular with the plane

4.2.2 The weight component of the block parallel to the plane

4.2.3 The smallest force required to pull the block downwards along the
plane

4.2.4 The power if the block moves at a constant speed of 12 m/s

QUESTION 5: HEAT

5.1 Explain the heat value of a fuel. (2)

5.2 A rivet with a length of 60 mm at 400 °C is used to join two heavy plates. After
the plates have been joined, the rivet is allowed to cool down to 30 °C. The
coefficient of linear expansion is 11 × 10-6 /°C.

Calculate the distance and total length that these plates will be pulled closer

The temperature of a square copper plate with a length of 400 mm increases

from 25 °C to 85 °C. The coefficient of linear expansion for copper

QUESTION 6: HYDRAULICS

6.1 Five students, namely Lethabo, Patrice, Keka, Sibusiso and Dimpho, were
given the assignment to find the pressure at the bottom of a dam at 5,4 m if it
is completely filled with:

6.1.1 water

6.1.2 mercury, having a density of 13 600 kg/m3

6.2 The effective pressure in a single-acting piston pump installation is 450 kPa
during a delivery stroke. The piston diameter of the pump is 150 mm, and its


stroke length is 2,5 cm.

Calculate the following:

6.2.1 The volume of water in dm3 displaced during the delivery stroke

6.2.2 The work done during the delivery stroke in joule

6.3 A submersible is underwater at a depth of 75 metres. The captain is concerned
about the effect that the pressure will have on the hull.

⬘ Calculate the gauge pressure and the absolute pressure that is exerted on the
hull at that depth. Take atmospheric pressure as 101.3 kPa. The density of
water is 1030 kg/m3 (4)
